Well, this was just great. Owlstar had:
1. Misunderstood her.
2. REJECTED HER???
This was so rude. SO RUDE! The damn fishies didn’t deserve her, anyway. Clearly they couldn’t handle such a perfect cat! And Echobarley, she guessed.
She tried to keep her composure;
“We’ll be out of your fur then. No use talking to someone who wants us dead..” she mewed, the second bit hidden under her breath.
With a flick of her tail, Ashwhisper gestured for Echobarley to follow her.
“C’mon, Echo.”

He looked dissapointedly as the leader sent them away, but her word was final. Guess that was it then. He sighed, looking at Ashwhisper, who looked eager to leave now. Odd. Maybe he misinterpreted her. Whatever. He just had to leave. Echobarley walked with her, meowing, "Bye then." at Owlstar.

Berryshine walked alongside Owlstar, eyes widening in alarm. Oh, stars above... the cat she saw looked bedraggled and, momentarily, unrecognizable. If it weren't for him saying her name, she would've thought this was a runaway kittypet who'd been dragged through the Dark Forest and back (figuratively speaking, of course... except who knows what those ghostly cats did in their free time?).
The small brown molly froze, squinting her eyes... until the familiarity in her brain finally registered the face to the name. One she'd almost forgotten, with all that'd happened since he'd last been among their ranks.
"O-Oh, my stars..." the medic murmured in awe. Were her eyes deceiving her? Then her paws were moving, carrying her to her former Clanmate (she stopped a fox-length or so in front of him, however, not wanting to get too close until Owlstar gave the all-clear... her leader was a much better judge of character than Berry was).
"J-Jayfrost! Oh, dear... w-what happened to you? It's been moons! We all thought you...!"
She trailed off for a moment, not needing to finish that sentence. They'd looked for him, but had ended up presuming him dead. The Clan had grieved him as a lost warrior — whether to the forest beyond, or the stars. The grim look on her soft features betrayed that much.
Berryshine was analyzing the former warrior as any good medicine cat would. Green eyes shone in worry as she took in his thinner frame, the dusty pelt, the way his movements indicated muscle soreness and the rawness of his paws; he'd clearly been traveling for awhile on his own, and it hadn't done him any favors.
Sympathy and concern gnawed at her heart, casting a glance at Owlstar. Surely the leader would remember the incident, and Jayfrost's sacrifice. But he was alive! Who knows where he'd been? The joy mingled with the relief and confusion, gaze darting all over his pelt. She had so many more questions on the tip of her tongue, but didn't want to overwhelm the guy; he looked absolutely exhausted and half-starved, as if the light in his eyes had dulled from whatever he'd endured.
"It's Berryshine now, by the way," she added in a quiet voice, giving the warrior a weak smile that fell within a few moments. Owlstar would be making the final verdict, but it didn't stop Berry from trying to assess Jayfrost's condition, already running through her mind what herbs she had back home and how to assist him. "P-Please, tell us what happened to you, i-if you can..."

jayfrost had lost track of the time he spent walking, paw pads raw and legs aching in exhaustion when he came across what he was pretty sure was riverclans border. had they moved? or had he simply forgotten the space they previously possessed.. it smelled like riverclan, but even through the haze permanently plastered over his vision he wouldve recognised the area. so this was..either a hallucination meant to lead him into a trap build by his mind itself, or riverclan had moved their borders.
he squinted across the invisible scent line, worry gnawing at his insides. the second pelt the twolegs had put him in itched where it had gathered debris on the way and he felt self conscious about the lack of offering he had to present to whomever took pity on him. with a bell strapped to his neck by use of a thick fabric collar he had been unable to remove without chocking himself out, it was hard to even feed himself.
he'd spend lots of time thinking about it, these past moons, how he would win them back over, what he could do to pay back to riverclan and make up for his failure. now it was all lost. lost in.. where was he going with this? the pulsating headache plaeguing him was of little help in trying to make sense of his thoughts.
apologise.. make up for his absence.. goldfish.. return..
a well known spirall. one that had kept him going. the former warrior had to expand far more energy than necesarry to draw his attention back to the two cats now slowly nearing, slipping into a dull unfocussed stare more than once before being able to experience the situation. everything was dull, like he wasnt quite himself. not like the times of breath taking and all encompassing panic, just, empty. a gutted fish. skinned rabbit. plucked bird. nothing but the vague manifestation of guilt. nausea. fear clawing at his insides. dull worry.
eyes narrowed in an attempt to place the bigger of the two, thick brown fur and a prominent facial scar. jays mind was closer to cotton in this moment, and even the smaller felines name too a while to register.
"oh berry..berrypaw" he mumbled aimlessly before tattered ears pulled back in shame, the realisation of his situation momentarily setting in. "oh! uhm i dont have a offering but i ask you to consider taking me back. i want to return to my..partner, goldfish, and her kits. after the otters-" the former warriors words trailed off, eyes going unfocussed for a moment. "i want to return to my home, please"

"My pulse is clear, rushing through my ears."
Owlstar walked out alongside Berryshine, eyes hard and muscles tensed. Their scent didn't belong to any clan, she could tell as she walked to the border. An outsider, for stars sake. Maybe she should start skinning each one that travels to her border, that should teach them not to come back when they knew they weren't welcome, send a message she was certain would stick in the air and the blood that would coat her muzzle.
Weaving through grass and pressing her calloused paws pads through stone, she halted once the furious film over her eyes faltered. She blinked a few times, eyes widening as all of the sharp threats she'd fit into her mouth jumbled together.
Were they a ghost? Or was that really — "... Jayfrost?" she tested, before she smiled, heck even snorted, despite herself. "Stars, what the heck are ya wearin'? Why is it... pink?" Albeit a more diluted shade of pink, but certainly not natural. On top of that, he had on a ridiculous collar, a bell that might as well drive Owlstar crazy. It's not that Owlstar wasn't glad to see him, she was stupid relived he wasn't actually dead. If only Stormstar was here... By the stars, she'd be ecstatic.
The leader cocked a brow and shook her head. "We're gettin' that stuff off ya chap... Right after ya tell us what 'appened." she nodded her head to Berryshine, whom looked as relieved as she was startled.
If it could offer the medic any condolences (telepathically, of course), if Jayfrost could prove he didn't willingly wander away into a two-leg home, that he'd been kidnapped or washed up there, Owlstar wouldn't mind letting him in. If they could get that junk off him. No warrior of her's would be showing up in a second pelt, something weirdly right and form fitting just like the collar around his neck. It was probably uncomfortable too and a hinder to movement. Stars, two-legs were insane.

how long had he been gone? when did he die? had it been greenleaf? jayfrosts slim head turned up, scanning the trees nearby for any signs what season it was now. greenleaf? newleaf? early leaffall? had it been a whole season cycle? berrypaw was all grown up now, he felt sick. the toms maw twisted into a brittle smile anyway. "oh im sorry dear, congratulations, i knew you'd do well."
jayfrost opened his maw to reply to berryshine when owlstar spoke up and his remaining blue eye snapped down to eye the diluted pink sweater, now stained with soil, that he hadnt been able to rid himself of. the small red details, too hidden within folds of fabric for him to make out were cutesy shrimp with hats and musical instruments, scattered about the fabric like they were dancing.
"thank you owl..owltalon?.. he tried, voice high at the end of her name in question. he had been gone long enough for tiny berryshine to grow up, maybe owltalon had gone through a name change as well? jays memory was hazy, names flashing in and out of memory, most of his clanmates names lost to the rush of the sea only a select few remained. goldfish, stormstar, owltalon, berrypaw.. berryshine.. who else? shellpaw and garlicfeather came to find, mental image distorted to the point where he probably couldnt recognise them if they stood in front of him.
"i couldnt manage to get all this off.. " the grey tom finally continued before averting his gaze once more in order to give both berryshine and owltalon the answer they deserved. cold water. a shiver ran through his body, gaze growing unfocussed. curved fangs, water. water.
his paws were dry. thats wrong. the wasnt supposed to be dry. there was no soil burning in his eyes. there was no rushing water or gurgling air bubbles.
"a-after the otter grabbed me.. i dont remember much of anything. everything just went black" his throat strained, voice cracked, silence stretched thin for a moment. "i woke up in a twoleg cage." they had strong smelling candles, both of them floating in almost flower-like scent clouds they dragged around with them wherever they went. his room smelled like cat. stale. old. there was no second cat.
"their den was always blocked off.. one day i thought they forgot but when i went out. it was just another.. big cage, like they put a small forest into it. weird plants." as if on cue, the long horizontal cut along his back burned, frayed fabric stinging the hardly scabbed over wound. "the big cage went into the ground but i dug a tunnel." it had taken far longer than it shouldve, the twolegs were observant.
The congratulations from Jayfrost ached her heart; the poor tom looked so incredibly tired, broken, and... sad. But she gave him a thankful dip of her head, eyes shining from the praise. 'I knew you'd do well'... those words would rattle in her ears for awhile. It was... nice, to think of another cat who'd had faith in her.
Jayfrost's story, however, only made her heart twist more. She couldn't imagine how terrifying it must've been, to have been dragged into the water by the otter and then have everything go dark. Berryshine was lucky to say she'd never been in such a dire situation before, and could tell by the haunted look in Jay's face that it was nothing to gloss over easily. Waking up in a Twoleg cage... she shuddered at the thought. Those creatures were more unpredictable than any other prey or predators the Clans encountered.
She wanted to ask all about it; now wasn't the time, but all of her mind was occupied with imaginings of what it possibly could've been like to have been locked up with Twolegs for so many moons.
Big cage, digging a tunnel... stars, Jayfrost must've been so lost and disoriented. Green eyes softened in sympathy as she nodded along to show she was listening. The small brown molly stepped forward to gently touch her tail to his shoulder in a comforting gesture. It was clear that the medicine cat believed him wholeheartedly.
"By the stars, Jayfrost... t-that all must've been so scary. I'm so glad y-you're alright after all that," Berryshine murmured earnestly. "To make it back here... you're strong. B-But you look so exhausted..." It was a comment of a healer, not anything condescending; in fact, she was worried and wanted to treat him right here and now, but knew it'd be useless until they got back home. She didn't have all her herbs and supplies here, and it would be far less comfy rather than the plushy moss nests in her den.
Home. Owlstar still had to make the final call. But she had a strong feeling as to what her leader would decide. As she waited for the final verdict, Berryshine was inspecting the pink pelt on Jayfrost merely with her gaze, looking at it with kit-like curiosity. She'd never seen such a thing. Could she... touch it?
Eh, probably best to wait until she could help treat the lost Clanmate. Focus, Berry!

"the big cage went into the ground but i dug a tunnel." it had taken far longer than it shouldve, the twolegs were observant.
Owlstar listened solemnly, not replying besides the occasional grunt that rumbled in her chest. What Jayfrost described wasn't anything she hadn't heard before, but a cage within a cage was new.
Her nose twitched at the thought. Two-legs should be tripping on their own two feet with all their stupidity, and yet it seemed they influenced the life of her clanmates each day. The security of the forest could be flipped with those odd mammals, and Owlstar wasn't having any of it. She swear she'd kill those giants.
Berryshine was won over. Owlstar didn't have to glance towards the herbalists to tell. She was always wide eyed and cautious with a level of empathy you could only find in a kit. She was special in that regard. The leaders tail dragged against the floor behind her, clouds of dust pluming in short spurts.
The description of everything was horrifying. And to think that those otters were just on the other side of Smallpines... The fur on her shoulders began to prickle, but she licked it flat before anycat could notice. They didn't need to know she was startled nor have a inkling of thought of her fear. A foundation couldn't be shaky lest the whole building would fall.
The tabby flicked an ear, the tip of her tongue peeking out of her battered maw. After he finished, she spoke up. "Owlstar, chap." she corrected, trying to push the melancholy out of her tone. It's not that she didn't like her position, she just hoped Stormstar would've stuck around longer than she did. Jayfrost using her old name... A name she hadn't heard in awhile... It sent her back to a pit of uncertainty but conflicted calm. "Stormstar died ta a coyote moons ago."
Her lips twitched, forcing her one eyed gaze to stay steady. "'M sorry, Jayfrost, she's gone now." it nearly made her posture deflate thinking about how Stormstar hadn't visited her since her death. She figured maybe the smokey she-cat wanted to relax, Riverclan was no easy clan to manage, but it made her throat tighten.
In an instant, her paws flexed and her eyes hardened. "Hold still, I'd hate ta nick ya." if he was going to step foot within her territory, he wouldn't be caught wearing that alive. Somecat would've sprang at him as soon as he was seen, he still carried the smell of a kitty pet after all.
It was harder to get through that she expected given the fabrics worn state, almost as though the sweater had been woven into him, clinging to bloodied fur like a fungus. She split frayed fabric down the middle of his chest, glancing at the scars she came across. It wound around his body in a puzzling manner... Wasn't the collar enough of an embarrassment?
"Squirt," she called, not looking up from her muddled reflection in the collar bell. "Get what I cain't reach. I'm rippin' this collar off." she opened her jaws and tugged. It was an odd texture, and the metal of the bell was uncomfortably cold. She chewed and paused occasionally to spit out small flakes of ribbon.
Finally, the collar cave way, clattering to the ground. The leader snarled at the noise, moving hastily to burry the wretched thing. Eh... she'd deal with it later. She then glanced up at Jayfrost directly, offering the very disoriented tom a smile. "Aye, welcome back soldier."
