MOSSTANGLE

It had been a while since Mosstangle last practiced flaying and skinning. However, with the recent orders circulating around outsiders, it seemed quite the necessary lesson. The dark tabby worked tirelessly before the sun even came up. She three mice for the lesson. It wasn't unusual for apprentices to hunt their own prey for these lessons, but since she already knew that Morningpaw was more than capable of hunting, she didn't bother with the half of the lesson.

Instead, she wanted him to see what a finished product looked like. Well, she actually wanted to practice and make sure she was still capable of doing it, but the first one was a better excuse to the enforcer. She brought the three mice back to camp and settled down in a corner of the camp to get started. She worked slowly and methodically. Her rper doesn't want to give away all of the instructions ahead of time, so after a while, she pulled the pelt of the mouse free and laid it beside the little creature. She felt quite satisfied with how it turned out and took a moment to admire the little, gruesome scene.

By the time she was done, the sun was rising. Mosstangle stretched carefully and luxoriously, avoiding agitating her sprained shoulder, and padded over to the apprentice den. "Morningpaw," She mewed for her apprentice, peering into the den. She was hoping he would already be up since he knew that he had training today. Well, she was pretty sure she told him, despite the training getting a little bit delayed. He had been pretty excited about the lesson. "Flaying lesson, lets go."

Morningpaw had been awake since dawn. Having awoken before the sun, unusually for him, the apprentice had been lounging behind the apprentices den, waiting to catch the first few rays of sunlight. It had been a while since he'd had any training, so perhaps he'd grown docile.

Or not.

The dark apprentice heard Mosstangle call into the den for him, but he wasn't there. Not that she'd noticed yet. Morningpaw stood up quickly, lifting his nose to the sky. Perfect. He was downwind. Letting his dark pelt hide him, the apprentice melted into the shortening shadows, only his glowing amber eyes visible. He flicked his tail and started moving, creeping around the den. He lingered, eyes fixed on his mentor. If he could do this, he'd be very happy, and would possibly tease her about this forever. A young apprentice, sneaking up successfully on an Enforcer!

Morningpaw pounced, landing either right by, or on top of, Mosstangle. "Boo! Haha!" He said, grinning lopsidedly with his sharp teeth gleaming. The mottled tabby flicked his ear and then looked interested. "Oh flaying? Cool." Yes, he could rip the prey apart ahahaha! The dark brown and black tabby sat down and looked at his mentor with intelligent amber eyes.

Huh. She didn't see Morningpaw in his nest. She narrowed her eyes and sniffed. His scent was still very fresh. He was definitely in camp. The enforcer was pretty sure she would've seen it if he sprinted out of camp within the last few minutes. She looked back out into the clearing, tail tip twitching back and forth as another yawn split her maw. She had worked since pretty early for this lesson. Perhaps he had just needed to go to the dirtplace.

The shout caught her attention, almost making her jump, even, but it was more the attack that she hadn't been expecting. When Morningpaw landed on her, the dark tabby's shoulder buckled and she winced. " 'ey, watch it you furball!" She hissed, still playful despite the the throbbing of her shoulder that had been reawoken. Oh, she was definitely going to be getting him back for this one. He better watch his back during his assessment.

Mosstangle heaved herself back up as he apprentice sat down, shaking out her pelt and flicking his nose with the tip of her tail. "Yes, flaying," She answered. "You said you wanted to learn how to skin, right?" a quick purr escaped her before she hobbled over to her little display.

 

There were three mice, of course. One of them sat in the center. No paws, with it's pelt neatly laid out beside it.

Mosstangle sat and curled her tail around her paws. "Do you know anything about flaying at all? Not including it being an ancient Shadowclan tradition." She asked.
