Sootstorm decided to give her thick gray-and-white fur a quick grooming before waking Hawkpaw and Icepaw, letting them sleep in a little longer. Their mentors were training them hard, she was sure, but they had both asked her for an ambush lesson.

Getting to her paws, the ShadowClanner stretched each leg in turn before trotting over to the apprentices' den, slipping in and giving Hawkpaw and Icepaw both a gentle prod in their flanks with her maw. ´´Hawkpaw, Icepaw. It's time to get up. I'm taking you both out for that ambush lesson you asked for.´´

Ahhh, it was about time! Instantly jolting awake at the mere prod, Hawkpaw jumped to her paws and gave the warrior an excited nod.

"Alright-y! Let's go!" She zipped out of the Apprentices' Den, hopping back and forth on her paws as she impatiently waiting for Icepaw. Ugh. Why not just take her? Why Icepaw too??? Blegh. Oh well, it wasn't like she could complain and get what she wants. anyways.

Mmmh. What? Ambush training? Oh, great. Icepaw groggily blinked and forced herself to stir awake, pushing herself onto her paws. She took the time of her life to stretch her limbs and shake her fluffy pelt out before slowly padding out, ears pinning back at Hawkpaw's unnecessary enthusiasm. She silently turned to Sootstorm to give the warrior a pleading look. She just wants to get this done and over with. Hopefully Hawkpaw doesn't do anything stupid.

As she followed the two apprentices out into the clearing, Sootstorm caught sight of the pleading look that Icepaw gave her. Blinking sympathetically at the white she-cat, the gray-and-white warrior shot Hawkpaw a warning look.

´´Don´t start being mean to Icepaw, Hawkpaw. Am I understood?´´ Sootstorm started off toward the training hollow whilst waiting for an answer.

Hawkpaw gasped in a mock-exaggerated offense. She held a paw against her chest for a brief moment before placing it back down to follow Stoostorm towards the Training Hollow.

"Me? Mean?? Don't worry about it! I'd never!" She shot a grin towards Icepaw. "Right?"

Okay wow. Was Hawkpaw always like this? Icepaw trailed behind Sootstorm and Hawkpaw, steering clear from Hawkpaw's excited bounding. She almost physically recoiled when Hawkpaw shot her a look, fur puffing up for a heartbeat before she realised the pale tortoiseshell meant no harm. Okay...? This was going to be fun.

Sootstorm said nothing, leading the two apprentices the rest of the way to the training hollow in a comfortable silence. She slowed to a halt whenever they reached it, her feathery tail swaying behind her.

´´All right, you two,´´ The gray-and-white she-cat mewed cheerfully, fluffing up her fur against the chill. Her emerald hues narrowed against gray light that the clouds overhead offered. ´´It's time for you to listen up, because ambush is a serious bit of your training, even though it isn't required for you to learn it.´´

Sootstorm circled the two apprentices, ears twitching. ´´We are ShadowClan cats, which means that we are just as sneaky as the rest of our Clanmates. We can blend in with the shadows and take our enemies by surprise whenever we attack. Tell me, why do you think we fight the other Clans?´´

She didn't really have an answer for Hawkpaw and Icepaw, but she wondered how their thinking processes were on the subject.

Hawkpaw nodded along, noting each and everything in her mind, though she would probably not remember it the next day. Anyways.

"Because they threaten us! Right? And we're better. ShadowClan always wins! That's what Spiritk- uhhh, that's what Spirit told me!" She puffed out her chest to seem bigger and more intimidating. "I think I blend well into the shadows! Icepaw... Not so much" She shot a look at the aforementioned cat, gaze softening.

She could probably have Hawkpaw do all the talking. She talked enough for the both of them, anyway. Despite the answers not being the best, it at least explained stuff. Very messily. Icepaw slowly and subtly nodded, sitting down and curling her tail around her paws. She glanced at Hawkpaw, who was then commenting on their abilities to hide in the shadows. She turned away, gaze casted to the ground.

Yeah, sure. She couldn't blend into the shadows. Dawnstar had already established that. And she had told her what she could do in place. Be quick.
The white-furred apprentice looked to Sootstorm, waiting for her next instructions.

Sootstorm shot Hawkpaw a warning glance, one that clearly said, Enough.

The warrior shook out her pelt. ´´Now, now, Hawkpaw. I'm sure that Dawnstar has established the situation with Icepaw´s pelt,´´ The she-cat tipped her head to the side. ´´She may have white fur, but she´ll blend in just as well as the rest of us do with practice, precision, and speed.´´

Now that Sootstorm had handled that problem, it was time to move on to the answer Hawkpaw had given her. ´´They threaten us, yes,´´ She commented, her feathery tail swaying behind her. Sootstorm fluffed up her pelt against the cold, chilly air. ´´But there are more reasons than that. Sometimes, the Clans get into fights due to lack of prey. Lack of prey can cause a hungry cat to make rash decisions. And when a Clan cat is hungry, they´ll likely cross boundaries. That is why we keep the borders marked; we make sure that the other Clans know that we won't tolerate any invasions, whether they are intended or not.´´

Hawkpaw smiled sheepishly and stuck her tongue out in a small blep at Sootstorm's warning look, shifting her weight from paw to paw. She half-heartedly nodded, but perked up at the warrior's answer to her question.

"Ahh, pooh. So what do we do about hunger? Hunt more?" She shrugged, fully expecting a complete answer to her stupid question. "What does ambushing have to do 'bout that? Ohh, wait! I know! So we can be better fighters when hungry cats attack, right???"

Icepaw let out a small breath of relief. At least Sootstorm understood. She gave the she-cat a grateful slow-blink, and watched as the answer to Hawkpaw's question was given. Hunger making cats not think properly... Interesting. Icepaw was quite experienced in that knowledge. Cat mentality wise. But she hadn't known about this. Which was pretty darn weird, because now that she thought about it, it was so obvious!
