Nightpaw was finally an apprentice.. And what did that mean? She could go on herb patrols!! The newly named apprentice bounded out of her nest, out of the den, and then slowed down right by the Medicine Den's entrance. The inky black she-cat crept inside carefully, making sure not to disturb the patients that were resting in the nests around. "Berryshine!" Star meowed gently, tail brushing the Medic's side. "It's me! Star! But I'm an apprentice now- Nightpaw." The apprentice said proudly, inky black, white marked pelt rippling. On a more sombre note.. Maybe she could talk to Berry about her past today. The brown she-cat would understand, of that Star was certain.

Berryshine nearly jumped when her name was abruptly called out; the jumpy she-cat was often on high alert, consciously or not. But when she realized who it was, she relaxed, giving Nightpaw a once-over to make sure nothing was wrong. It was only confirmed when the she-cat happily announced her big news.

"T-That's right — I saw you at the meeting," Berryshine purred, her eyes softening. Her voice was low so as not to disturb the other patients, but it was warm and pleased, happy for the young one before her. "Congratulations, Star! I-It's a big step, and I know you'll do great. Now I can s-send you on some herb patrols for me, right?" She added with a smile, remembering how enthusiastic the young one had been when she was a kit. To be excited for patrols (just like Whisperingpaw) was both amusing and endearing to the medicine cat.

But right now, there was something else she could sense. Having worked with cats this long for problems both physical and mental, Berryshine could sense something else weighing on Nightpaw's mind — perhaps it was the look in her eyes, almost... somber. Maybe the medic was overthinking it, but she at the very least seemed a bit distracted despite her happy news. She tilted her head, trying to peer into the new apprentice's mind with merely a glance.

"I-Is something else on your mind, Nightpaw?" She asked gently, encouraging the 'paw to speak.

Nightpaw immediately looked guilty when Berryshine jumped, and brushed her fluffy tail across the Medic's tail in apology. Hopefully she didn't scar her too much- The inky black cat would be more careful in the future. She hadn't realized she was so quiet. Possibly she could tap her tail against the entrance before she came in, just to let Berryshine know when she had arrived, so that Star couldn't spook her again. Soon, the apprentice beamed at the brown she-cat, a smile breaking out across her face like the sun breaking through rain clouds. It honestly meant the world to her that Berry was proud of her- Star had no family members left, so no one ever really recognised her, well, anything.

"Of course!" Star meowed, fluffy black tail twitching excitedly. "I'll be good at Herb Patrols! Probably." Well, she certainly hoped so! Her fur might be fluffy enough to tuck herbs in it, and she could ask Berry for tips. The apprentice turned her head to study her black fur critically, washed out, pale blue eyes examine her pelt closely. "I can probably carry a lot of herbs." Nightpaw said, turning back to the Riverclan Medicine Cat.

Ah, another question. Nightpaw's face fell slightly. This was supposed to be a cheerful, lighthearted session. The black and white marked she-cat didn't like unloading her troubles on others- She liked to help other cats, but didn't like to weigh them down with her own... tragic... story. Swishing her tail, the apprentice considered. Maybe... Maybe she should tell Berryshine about her past today... It wasn't that bad though! Others have it worse than her, and she was making it a big deal. It was terribly dramatic. Nightpaw didn't particularly like drama, so she wasn't keen to start any by telling her life story.. But still. Maybe. "Uhm." Nightpaw sat down, star-shaped trail of white markings crinkling on her cheek as she bit her lip in thought. It was an internal struggle, a debate, but eventually, she sighed and curled her tail around her paws. "I didn't have the best start to life... I thought- I wondered whether I could... I don't know.. Tell you, maybe?" Pale blue eyes looked up and met Berryshine's own leaf-green eyes.

Berryshine had purred at the thought of Nightpaw being the best at herb patrols and carrying them; it wasn't a very common trait of 'paws, to be excited about such mundane things. Many of them were far more thrilled by hunting or battle training, as it was much more... engaging, of course. Not plants. But Nightpaw was one of the few that enjoyed it, and Berry would be happy to indulge her in herb patrols as they came up.

However, the way her face fell tugged at Berryshine's heart. Ah... so she'd been right. Something was off.

As Nightpaw sat down, so did the medicine cat beside her, putting them on equal ground. Her gaze was attentive and her ears were perked to listen as the apprentice hesitated. Then, the few words she said seemed to carry so much weight — so much struggle, for someone so young.

Reaching out so that her tail brushed Nightpaw's shoulder, Berryshine nodded sympathetically, her gaze softening. "O-Of course, Star... I'd be honored for you t-to share with me. Please, tell me." This was not only part of the medic's job, but also something she enjoyed, in a way — though it always hurt to speak to cats about struggles, ones that weighed heavily on them, she also felt like she was capable of helping them.

So Berryshine would listen! That warmed Nightpaw's heart more than anything, and the apprentice flicked her fluffy black tail around her single white paw, blinking her pale blue eyes. "Thanks Berryshine." The she-cat whispered. "That means more to me than you know." That last part was whispered so quietly the Medic would only hear it if she listened very carefully. Clearing her throat lightly, the uniquely marked apprentice started quietly.

"M-my mother had two kits in her entire life. Me, and my sister. Our birth was sad. Uncalled for." She paused, blinking away the tears that had started to form. "S-sorry. Uhm. Her name was G-Greyskies. She- she died giving birth to us, and my sister was Stillborn, so only I came out of that ordeal alive. My father's name was Fishslip, and h-he.. Didn't really like me. He was mean and cold." Nightpaw looked down at her paws. "I l-loved him still. But he died when I was only a moon old, in a border skirmish, so I don't remember either of them much." The dark, fluffy apprentice looked up at Berryshine, waiting for confirmation before she said anything else.
