Ah, yes. The day after the ceremony. Ploversnap’s apprentice should be here at any moment. He may love to do his own training session, after all. Ploversnap wakes up from her well-rested nap and rises from her nest. It must be dawn already. It’s better to train in that timezone, after all. With Ploversnap’s head tucked out of the warrior’s den, she scans around the camp clearing, before heading out and sitting near it while waiting for her apprentice to come.

She should’ve gotten into the apprentice’s den and called after Brightpaw’s name, but she knew that he would be a responsible apprentice, and she would think of a different solution when he still won’t appear.

Brightpaw nervously follows the group of new apprentices into their den, finding an available nest and curling up in it. The day seemed to pass so quickly as he slept over the snoring of other cats. Gosh, he would have to get used to it. He wanted to reassure himself, but he wasn’t so sure of the truth.

The apprentice stiffens as he stirs from his sleep, jolting up to a sit. Was he keeping Ploversnap waiting? As quiet as he could be [which seemed almost impossible for him], he stalks out of the apprentices den, his small head poking out first to see if Ploversnap is in sight. When he realises the view is quite terrible, Brightpaw fully leaves the apprentice den and twirls in search. He might get dizzy, but. It was a good..ish technique.

Once the new scent and fur of his mentor is made conscious of, the tomcat bounded towards his new mentor, looking up at her and giving a smile. ”Sorry for the wait, Pllllo...Ploversnap.” Hey. He’s still getting used to the name! It’s not his fault he never knew what a plover was. His fur sticks up in embarrassment, and Brightpaws maw is open to give an apology but none comes out, so he changes the topic sheepishly. ”Anywayss. What’s first? For er.. teaching, ifs that’s what you’d call it.” Mentoring? Learning? Gah! They were all the same! To Brightpaw, they were.

“Ploversnap! Yis!” Thank the stars. There are assumably a lot of cats that need a longer period of time to remember their names. It’s just unique sounding, and her parents frankly cared a lot for her when it comes to naming their kittens. She will never regret that part. And no, he wasn’t too late. It needs a bit of training to make punctuality become a habit, and she completely understands it.

“Heeeey. No need to apologize! When I was a “paw” like you, I was often late this whole time when my mentor is waiting for me to arrive just in time. Very often. I even skipped training and nearly got punished… Twice, I believe! How embarrassing! But it was quite fun, too. Mocking older cats was something I secretly enjoyed back in my days.” Ploversnap then shook her head before her head moved closer to him, her voice lowered, and her eyes widened with caution. “Just… don’t tell anyone about it. I promised them that I’ll be mature after my warrior ceremony. ‘Kay?”

Okay, then enough for chatting. There’s training to be done! “I’ve heard that you enjoy swimming the most. Let’s start with that one then, shall we? C’mon.” She tilts back to the camp exit, before looking back to Brightpaw and gesturing her head towards the Riverclan territory.

➥ Brightpaw wanted to move on. Was it only because of his mistake with pronouncing his own mentors name with a stutter? Maybe. But he won’t really admit defeat. Not yet. He was exceptionally good with long names. Just long names he’s been used to hearing. Like Primrosemama- Primroseadder. And Freezingfury. Such a coincidence! Both his parents had long names! Cool.

➥ The apprentice felt he wasn’t reassured by Ploversnap, his ears perking up at her story. He lets out a mrrow of laughter during her tale, sitting down intently. Mocking seemed like a nice technique to make others mad. But most of the time when Brightpaw was mad he shrugged it off. Maybe he should stop doing that. Ah. Welp.”Ya secrets safe with me,” he mews, green eyes following his mentor.

➥ Ah! Back to the topic of training! Fun. Brightpaw nods, following after Ploversnap but sticking close to her. After all. He’d never escaped camp as a kit, but he’d heard of others attempting to from.. eavesdropping. Unpleasant memories. Hm. He’s excited. Maybe he’ll be as good as Primmama. Well. Not as good but still.

She barely began Brightpaw’s training, yet Ploversnap feels… proud of her apprentice. Is that even normal? They both make their way through the rivers of the territory, leap after leap, maybe a bit of tripping and stumbling, but luckily, none of them fell into the river. The warrior scans around the scenery, possibly sniffling for prey or such. It’s a wonderous day out, and summer draws close. Hopefully the temperature won’t be too intense, she wished.

They finally reached their destination. A bigger pond, surrounded by several cattails and rivers flowing by, and their rippling surface gleaming by the blazing sun. The depth is shorter than the average height of a warrior – ideal for training their apprentices to swim. “Alrighty, Brightpaw. We’re here! Ready to show your good ol’ Ploversnap what you can do?” She gently nudges his shoulder with her elbow for a bit of motivation. Why, of course. He already is motivated.

➥ As they progress through the territory, Brightpaws green eyes can’t help but gaze across the place in wonder. It was so lush, and— well, er.. he didn’t know how else to explain it. Andd he just stumbled over a root. Darn root. Before his mentor could acknowledge what had happened, in simple words as fast as he can he scrambles up and licks his soft fur, which had bristled again, down. He notices the weathers quite warm today. He’d almost never really experienced the full weather, especially when it was so sunny, during kithood.

➥ Had they gotten where they needed to be? Already? Huh. Time passes quickly when your having fun, I guess. Ah. Anyways. Brightpaws eyes sparkle in awe as he stares around. It was so pretty, almost too pretty to swim in.. wait, he was gonna swim in it anyways.. awe.. ”Yeah!” he purrs, leaping back slightly in joy. Was he gonna jump in the water and skiddle there like a dead fish? Probably. But before he could’ve, he looks up at Ploversnap expectantly. What basics did he have to know before he could paddle his life away?

Okay, then. On with the basics. With her eyes squinted in thought, Ploversnap draws closer to the pool. She couldn’t tell how and where to start, but she slowly gets to the point, and tilts back to Brightpaw. “Well, then. Listen carefully.” She declares as she dramatically clears her throat. “Before you’ll get into the pond, I want you to swim near the corner and hold on as long as possible without sinking down. Don’t make your movements too intense, and not too soft, yis?” She states with a nod.

“I’ll go first. Watch and learn.” After those words, she steps into the tarn. She can already feel the water decreasing her gravity and her movements pushing harder against the liquid. She lastly lifts up all of her limbs to paddle on the water surface. “Pretend that you’re trotting on ground, and make it swing a bit more to hold onto the surface.” The splashing sounds and the larger space between her and Brightpaw makes it a bit harder to perceive, hence why her tone is louder than usual.

Ploversnap swims back to the dry surface, droplets dripping from her silver-white drenched pelt. The warrior shakes herself from head to toe to sprinkle away the water that once clung to her. She feels urged to do it once again, it was quite fun to swim! “’Kay, Brightpaw. Your turn. And one more thing…” Ploversnap confirms with a smirk and shakes her head. “There’s no need to worry about it. You won’t get drowned or anything. If you’ll lose your balance, just call for help, and I’ll immediately bring you back to land.”

➥ Brightpaw pauses for a moment, wondering to follow Ploversnap in. But the better of his common sense takes over, and he’s just there standing awkwardly. ”Im listening!” he meows excitedly, sitting down. ”Swim near the corner and hold on as long as possible. Not too intense neither soft. Yup!” Mentally the notes are there in his head. He just wonders how long until they’re messed up and become out of order. Ah, well!

➥ Green eyes focused on her movements, even though he was never as concentrated as right now before, Brightpaw would like to be a nice swimmer! Once she slid into the trickling water, he noticed how she slows down and he’s not sure if she’s only doing that to show him how. Was water always like that? The apprentice simply stares with awe at her swimming skills. ”Trotting. Right.” It’s slowly getting harder to hear her through the splashing and doodah.

➥ Brightpaw opens his maw to speak. ”That was incredible!” Maybe I’ll be just as good as Ploversnap if I work hard enough, he reassures himself, looking back at his mentor. Then it was his turn to try. ”’Kay!” Thel tomcat nods to himself, skiddling to the nearest corner and entering the water. Jeez, it was incredibly cold! He felt the liquid starting to slow him down. Right. Just like trotting on ground. His paws scrabble into a slowed trot as he leans onto the corner for support. Was he doing it? Ah. He was incredibly slow at it. It took a decent while until his joints started to ache. Brightpaw flicked water off his ear, stopping the quick splashes and attempting to heave himself off the water. Once he finds out it’s unfortunately unsuccessful, Brightpaw paddles back to Ploversnap, flopping down on the ground. ”Its real tiring. How do you manage that? Did I do good?” With the thought he may be showering her with questions, the tomcat stretched up and becomes quiet, waiting for her response.

Ploversnap watches intently as her apprentice slinks into the water. She can see him putting a lot of effort into his very first swimming attempt, but it didn’t work out as well as she would expect. She observes Brightpaw’s movements, just to make sure she’ll notify him of anything he must improve for the second try. He somehow got the hang of it for a few seconds, but his aching pain made him give up on swimming for longer.

Her apprentice finally made his way back to her presence. He seems exhausted, and when he flopped onto the ground, she stiffens her lips and breaks eye contact with him as she eyes to the right, then exhaled when looking back. “Oof, well… you just…” She hesitated but attempts to soothe him with a teasing tone in her voice. “It needs a bit of practice. You’re still four moons old, yis?”

She gently nudges his shoulder with her snout to follow her back into the pool. If he couldn’t manage it alone, then he should swim with a bit of support. She gently steps back into the water, gradually getting used to the cold temperature. “Look, you did a proper work at the start, but you’ve probably made your movements wrong on the other half. Now listen…” The female warrior mews. “You just need to make your joints stay under control, which means that they shouldn’t move in a crooked manner. Make them swing in vertical loops. Don’t make them move horizontally!” She clarifies what she meant by pulling her right foreleg from the water for a better view and moving it just as said. “And spread your paws! You don’t want them to ache too, do you?” Stars, teaching someone about swimming isn’t as easy as she thought.
