The Talkative Blackbird

Blackbird sat, swiping a paw across his face a few times. He’d begun to think about the first interaction with… her… and he felt himself almost recoil with embarrassment as he recalled everything he said. Why did I say that… Can’t just as a cat who they have a crush on or if they have a mate. He thought, placing his paw back down next to his other. It was a snowy morning, meaning most of the clan was probably out trying to hunt while there was prey or hiding among the brambles of the dens around camp. His gaze traveled to each in turn.

But I’m gonna brave the weather. Surely I won’t- His gaze fell upon a familiar she-cat. Flowerhawk. All the confidence he had before melted within seconds. No. I won’t approach… She probably won’t wanna talk to a clumsy, awkward cat like me. He thought, quickly going back to running his paw over his nose, though he side eyed Flowerhawk.

Flowerhawk wasn’t too keen on leaving the protection provided by the warrior’s den. However, she couldn’t shake the dreaded, agitating feeling of boredom and laziness she always got on slow days like this. Her restless energy would be better spent hunting than sitting around, anyway. Ignoring the sting of the snow, she trudged out to head out to Smallpines or something. Smallpines, the place where it had happened. Flowerhawk still had no idea how to feel about it. She liked Blackbird, she really did. But he confessed feelings for her the day they met. That had to be a bad sign. Or was it?

Maybe, she thought, I should get to know him better before I decide anything.

Opportunity works in odd ways. Flowerhawk felt a gaze on her right then, and when she turned around, she spotted Blackbird grooming himself and obviously watching her. Briefly, she wondered why he stared rather than say anything, but she figured he was embarrassed about last time. She paused. Should I talk to him? He wanted to talk to her, or so she assumed. Anxiety rushed through her at the thought. What if it got weird again?

Well, only one way to find out. She had just told herself she wanted to get to know him better, after all.

Flowerhawk approached, somewhat awkwardly, with a quiet “Hey, what’s up?” But that didn’t feel like enough. Maybe she should talk about what she was just thinking about. Stars, what was she just thinking about? Her mouth went dry with nerves. “I was just, uh, thinking about cold it—about how cold it is,” she blurted, a bit too loud. Great, now you’ve done it, Flowerhawk, she chided herself silently. Messed up the sentence and made it awkward! And stars, she knew how toms could be sometimes. She hoped Blackbird didn’t take her nerves as a sign that she reciprocated his feelings for her. Because she didn’t, and she wouldn’t, at least until she knew him better.

Blackbird watched as Flowerhawk began to leave. Then she stopped and he felt her gaze meet his. Immediately, his eyes shifted, quickly looking at the ground as he put his paw down again but it was too late; she was approaching him, trying to talk, and he had to answer. He looked up again, ears flattened in embarrassment as it always was around Flowerhawk. Perk your ears up! You look like you’re guilty. He told himself, and immediately his ears perked.

“H-hello.” He mewed, tail covering his paws. “Not much.. Just trying to make sure my fur isn’t knotted with snow. You never know.” He immediately felt embarrassed. He was already making the conversation seem awkward. Immediately, he purred as Flowerhawk stumbled over her words. Nervous, I suppose. His confidence shrank as soon as he thought that. They were both nervous. But any cat could be nervous. Especially in this weather, when you could slip and slide all over the icy ground

“It is cold, I suppose.” He muttered, nodding slowly. He wasn’t exactly bothered by the weather since he had such long fur, but he still felt the cold breeze when it blew through his pelt. Curiosity sparked in Blackbird’s eyes as he continued. ”So.. Can I help you?” He asked, tilting his head slightly to the left.

Blackbird’s ears flattened… was he mad? Flowerhawk’s paws hesitated, although so briefly that it likely wouldn’t be noticed. The tom’s ears were back up, though, perked in a friendly way. She was still a little wary approaching him, but he didn’t sound angry when he answered her greeting.

It was probably nothing.

“Oh, uh, yeah,” she mewed. “Always gotta make sure that fur is unknotted…with snow…” This wasn’t going well. Stars, why would she do this to herself? This was the first time they’d talked since the incident without apprentices acting as buffers, and she should’ve known it would be awkward. But they were in too deep now, and it’d only be worse if she backed out.

Fluffing up her fur to better protect herself from the weather, Flowerhawk contemplated his question. Why had she come here? Oh, right, to get to know him better. She couldn’t say that, though. “I just thought it would be nice to talk,” she said as she sat down. “I really enjoyed last time, even if… you know. And we haven’t really talked since then, aside from talking about our apprentices and stuff.” She tilted her head. “Got anything you’d like to talk about?”

[ I’m tempted to get another perk for Mr. Blackbird. Maybe the Wheel again- Perhaps luck will be on his side… ]

Blackbird nodded. He listened as she mentioned the whole… incident. Immediately, his fur bristled, his ears flattened to where they were hidden by his neck fur. He felt uncomfortable mentioning it. His fur fell flat as she went on about their apprentices and other things… “Alright.” He mewed, ears perked again. “Yeah. There’s a bit to talk about.” He mewed, his gaze shifting to his paws.
“I-I got another apprentice… Cricketpaw I believe was their name.” He thought back to the meeting. He’d met the young apprentice, seeing all the excitement and enthusiasm. The same things he must’ve had when he came to Thunderclan. When he was assigned Darkwing as a mentor. He shook his head. “I guess I’ll have quite the pawful. With them.” His nose twitched. “I mean… It’s like if we…” This time he caught himself, quickly pulling his paws closer to him, forcing them into an uncomfortable position. … had kits… He finished silently. Why was he such a mousebrain! He was just going to ruin the friendship worse than he already did. Loud mouth… He thought bitterly.
”Y-You should probably talk before I talk more than I should.” There was an edge in his voice.

Flowerhawk inwardly winced as she caught her mistake: mentioning it. It was clear by Blackbird’s reaction that he didn’t want to talk about it. Stupid, she thought. Why on earth would you bring up something like that. Of course he doesn’t want to talk about it! She felt the guilt rise up and dropped her gaze. ”Sorry, I shouldn’t have… shouldn’t have said that.”

The tabby forced her eyes back up as Blackbird told her about his new apprentice. Another one, right after he’d been assigned Sagepaw? “Good luck, friend,” she mewed. “Two’s a lot!” She tilted her head curiously as Blackbird trailed off. We? What did Flowerhawk have to do with his apprentices? Whatever he was going to say was clearly awkward, or so Blackbird thought, at least. But he couldn’t just leave her hanging like that. Surely it couldn’t be that bad. “What were you saying?”

Well, now that she thought more about it, maybe that was a bad idea. Because last time Blackbird had spoken more than he should, as he put it, it got weird. But the words were already out there, and Flowerhawk couldn’t say she wasn’t curious.

The Talkative Blackbird

Blackbird quickly shook his head, not hearing what she said. “N-nothing.. Just.. um- Nervous. About mentoring 2 apprentices.” The lie was obvious as he hadn’t even tried. ”You don’t need to know…” He whispered quietly, too quiet for anyone to hear hopefully. That’s when he realized what she had said. “I-I meant it’s fine…” His ears flattened against his head, facing straight but his gaze side eyeing the wall and that defended camp. “It’s just.. hard. There’s someone I.. I like. A pretty she-cat. She’s probably sleeping by now.” He mewed, hoping this lie was more secure. She didn’t need to know.

His gaze locked with Flowerhawk’s. He felt a warm feeling; Love. But it wasn’t just for anything. It was for the cat before him. I’m too obsessive, aren’t I..? The thought made his pelt crawl. He didn’t want to be a nuisance to someone, especially not her. He set his paws back to where they were, the uncomfortable feeling ebbing away. Hopefully she won’t understand, and if she does, hopefully she won’t say it aloud…

Just nervous about mentoring two apprentices. Flowerhawk narrowed her eyes, not buying it. Blackbird mumbled something else underneath his breath, but the she-cat couldn’t catch it. Oh, well. If he didn’t want to finish what he started, she wouldn’t force him to. It didn’t stop her curiosity though, and she would definitely be watching him closer from now on to figure out—

Oh.

A she-cat he liked.

A pretty she-cat.

So that’s why Blackbird was so nervous. Not only had he confessed his feelings for her on a whim, but he’d also moved on. So fast. And Flowerhawk knew she should be relieved. She didn’t like him. She didn’t. She hardly knew him. But something about another she-cat prickled her fur, gave her a hot feeling in her belly, flickered in her gaze. Jealousy. She didn’t know him. She didn’t like him. She should be glad, and she was glad, that Blackbird had moved on, because maybe he deserved a she-cat that liked him back on the first day. So why couldn’t she squash the tingle of envy she felt when he mentioned a she-cat he liked? It made no sense. She dropped her gaze.

“Oh, moving on!” she mewed, forcing cheerfulness into her voice. “Who is she? What’s she like?” What does she have that I apparently don’t? The last question went unsaid, even though she wanted to know. When she forced herself to meet Blackbird’s gaze and not seem uninterested, Flowerhawk was startled to see… something. She couldn’t tell what, but it probably had something to do with her.

Stop it, Flowerhawk!

[ Hope Blackbird doesn’t start arguments between Briarmask and Flowerhawk- I thought I saw Flower as a friend of Briarmask’s on her finder. - ]

A strike of worry hit the Tom as he saw Flowerhawk’s slit eyes. She doesn’t believe me. Blackbird didn’t respond to it though, his ears perked back up and restraining himself from snapping, hissing, I’m not a liar! Instead, he flicked his tail before laying it out behind him, his eyes closed. His eyes opened and he was met with a look of jealousy. Blackbird was surprised. How can she be jealous about a she-cat? It’s not like she has a crush on me. But that was all he could think; or maybe she was just jealous that he liked a cat. That didn’t make sense. She could like a cat too.
His surprise turned to terror as she asked about the cat he liked. Ears pinned, he responded. ”What are? A couple of apprentices gossiping?” He asked, trying to bring humor into the conversation. Blackbird was trembling a little bit. “U-um…” Quickly running through the she-cats he knew in the clan, he blurted a random one, hoping the lie didn’t come back to haunt him. “BRIARMASK!” He gazed at his paws, his terror straightening. She’s gonna hate me when she hears about the lie… He thought, pawing at the ground anxiously. Briarmask wasn’t a cat he’d met. Just a cat. Though he’d heard her name called several times. From Acornfall atleast… “S-she’s nice, gorgeous, and she even… likes the same prey as me!” He knew how stupid he sounded but he couldn’t just tell the truth. What are you getting yourself into?! He hissed silently. He hated lying. He was usually a honest cat. A loyal cat. She doesn’t need to know. Blackbird repeated to himself, repeating it until he finally could meet Flowerhawk’s gaze, hoping his gaze gave nothing away at that moment.
