Sootstorm's tail tip twitched, her green eyes narrowing thoughtfully. ''Let me put it this way,'' She meowed, tipping her head to the side. ''The reason that climbing is a part of your training is because the thundersquirrels climb. If we're not careful during battle, whether it's a border fight or territory or camp raid, they can use the trees to escape. It's a clever tactic that Dawnstar has wanted the Clan to adopt, as the thundersquirrel that you're fighting would not expect you to be able to follow them up into the tree. Is that a better explanation?''

The gray-and-white warrior listened to her apprentice as he adjusted his answer. ''That's correct, but another reason is you don't want your Clanmates to have to save you each and every time you get stuck.''

LionPaw listened with perked ears as the arrive explained the whole ThunderClan-climbing thing. It made sense and he made sure to mentally nite it all. “Yeah- ‘ve got it now.” he responded confidently. He was standing tall with his chest puffed out as he watched. He got this. “Alright, where do I start?”

Sootstorm leapt up into the next branch, digging her claws into the bark. ''Leap up onto the branch I was just on, and make sure to dig your claws into the bark,'' The gray-and-white warrior instructed, her eyes firm. ''Try to focus on relying just on your claws, but use you tail for balance if need be.''

LionPaw nodded, looking at the relatively low branch…focus…focus. His gaze narrowed on it as he wiggled his haunches and launched himself up, letting out a huff of aid as he made it onto the branch, quickly catching himself before he lost balance. His claws dug into the bark and he looked to SootStorm once he was stable.

''Excellent job, Lionpaw,'' Sootstorm praised, her green eyes filled to the brim with pride for her young apprentice. She leaped up to the next branch so Lionpaw could follow. ''The reason we are going up branch by branch instead of climbing the trunk is because---one, it is faster, and two, the thundersquirrels climb branch by branch.''

His blue eyes narrowed on the next branch that his mentor just left, flicking his ear in acknowledgment for her speaking. LionPaw carefully crouched down a bit, before leaping onto the next branch and quickly steadying himself. Huh. He was getting the hang of this…oh of course he was! He was too good to not! It was proving to be mainly of balance skills, easy enough. The thought of being a warrior soon simply fueled him more. “Huh. Interesting.” he responded simply, not wanting to seem like he was ignoring the warrior.

Sootstorm nodded, climbing up one more branch. ''Even if a thundersquirrel expected you to follow them up a tree, they would think you would climb the trunk instead of jumping from branch to branch. You would have the element of surprise on your side and would be able to use it to your advantage.''

LionPaw’s claws scraped against the bark as he hauled himself up another branch, ears flicking towards his mentors words. He huffed, glancing down at the ground below before shifting his grip. “Element of surprise, huh?” he echoed, eyes narrowing in thought. He took a moment to steady himself before testing the branch under his paws, muscles tensing as he prepared to move again. “Makes sense. If they don’t see it coming, they can’t run fast enough.” His whiskers twitched as a smirk crossed his face. “But what if the branch is too thin? Or it breaks? Then what?” Despite his usual nature, there was genuine curiosity in his tone. He wasn’t about to look like a fool if something went wrong—he wanted to know the backup plan before he needed it. Always LionPaw and the what-ifs. He wouldn’t call himself a worrier, but he always wants to be prepared.
