Leafbare was a terrible season for hunting, that was a surprise to no one. But Duskleaf hoped that searching for prey in a time of scarcity would actually be better for Beaverpaw and Riftpaw to learn to find prey. In fact, what he was most worried about was his own lack of smell. Scent was very important in tracking prey, but Duskleaf knew he might find it a bit difficult to teach his apprentices how to utilise something he wasn’t able to himself. 'I’ll have to try anyway…' He thought to himself.

Duskleaf led his two apprentices to a spot not far from camp where he believed there would be a decent amount of prey. Arriving there, he sat down facing Riftpaw and Beaverpaw, curling his tail around his paws. "I know the weather’s not the best, but hunting like this should help with finding prey." He began. In the corner of his eye, he spotted a mouse which didn’t seem to notice him, but his eyes did not betray the mouse’s position. "Do either of you notice a smell at all?" He whispered, hoping they’d both know how to find prey by scent.

Beaverpaw has hunted... one time.
A warrior had taught him in a hurry out of necessity for a patrol.
But that was all the way back in the mountains.
And also it was the only time he has hunted. Ever.

He's rather be taught all over again than screw up 'cause he can't remember.

Anyway, back to focusing in the present... and stuff.
Duskleaf had stopped and asked if the could smell anything.

His nose must be messy 'cause of the cold or something, he can't seem to get anything.
He glanced at Riftpaw, silently hoping maybe he had something.

Tail held high as he trotted beside Beaverpaw following their mentor, Riftpaw opened his jaw to scent the air. "Uh..."

Honestly, he didn't really know what he was looking to scent. "I smell...frost?" He replied, looking confused. He tried to focus more. "And...I think that's a blackbird?" He mewed not so confidently.

"This is gonna be harder than I thought…" Duskleaf whispered to himself. Beaverpaw didn’t seem to smell anything and Riftpaw was smelling something completely different. Duskleaf stared off into space, deep in thought for an awkwardly long time as he tried to come up with something. How was he supposed to teach them to find prey by scent if he couldn’t do that himself? After awkwardly standing there thinking for what seemed like an eternity, he finally decided that he wouldn’t be able to do this by himself.

"Uh…excuse me a moment…" He said to the apprentices and walked towards the entrance to camp. He was still close enough that they should be able to see him, but now he could also see into camp. "Irisdream?" He called out, hoping his close friend and fellow Lionheart would be around. "I’m…needin’ a bit of help here if you’re not busy…"

Irisdream had been grooming her fur when she heard her name called by an increasingly familiar voice. Duskleaf! She turned smoothly, trotting gracefully over to him when he called. “I’m never too busy for you, Duskleaf.” She mewed instinctively, deciding immediately not to even try to understand why every word she said was true. She reached out to touch noses with him in greeting, trying her best to hide how flustered she actually felt. “What is the problem?” She asked with a soft smile and a slight tilt to her head.

Riftpaw seemed about as unsure as Beaverpaw was.
Then Duskleaf said to excuse him, and Beaverpaw's eyes followed the LionHeart as he headed back to the camp entrance and... got Irisdream?

Oh StarClan, what was happening?
The ticked tabby glanced at Riftpaw "What do you think he's getting Irisdream for?" He asked quietly, as usual.

As Duskleaf excused himself, Riftpaw flattened his ears as he looked back at Beaverpaw. "I dunno. Do you think we're in trouble?" He whispered back with rounded eyes. Sure, the pair were Lionhearts, but Riftpaw didn't view Duskleaf as one that was high off the power. He viewed his mentor as kind and understanding and immeasurably patient...had the apprentices pushed him to his limit? Ugh, he did not want Sunheart scolding him. Please don't let that be true.

Duskleaf smiled as Irisdream approached and touched noses with him. He looked into her eyes affectionately for a brief moment before looking away in embarrassment. He felt this…unusual feeling whenever he was around her. It wasn’t a bad feeling, in fact it brought a sense of peace and comfort to him. He knew what this feeling was…but how could he admit it? What if he was reading things the wrong way? What if Irisdream didn’t feel the same way and he made a fool of himself…? 'Focus, Duskleaf!' His mind interrupted. "I was teaching Beaverpaw and Riftpaw about hunting, and of course it’s important that they know how to find prey by scent…" He began. "The problem is, I don’t have a sense of smell. I haven’t since the other clans attacked us, it was the damage to my nose." He glanced back to Riftpaw and Beaverpaw momentarily, before turning to Irisdream once again. "I’ve tried to teach them how to find prey by scent but…it’s not working, so I was wondering if you could help with that?"

Irisdream felt her ears grow hot at the look in Duskleaf’s gaze. She also turned away when he did, giving her shoulder a swift lick. She recognized that look in his eyes…Wavebreaker used to look at her that way…but no. It couldn’t be that. She was many moons Duskleaf’s senior, surely it was some kind of admiration or something. Not that she was really sure what that would be that he admired her for. But it made more sense than her other theory…although the disappointment she felt at that reasoning was something else entirely. Focus!

She followed Duskleaf to the apprentices, nodding as he explained the situation. Her gaze much more focused. “Ah, I can see why that presents an issue.” She mewed in a soft voice, casting a small, teasing smile at Duskleaf before touching her nose to his cheek. But when she turned back to the apprentices her gaze was serious. “Alright you two, you’ve smelled prey from the prey pile before right? Or when a patrol has brought food in?” She asked, figuring that this would be a good foundation to build from.
