When does a candle become a blaze [Cloverpaw assessment]
cloverpaw
cw; grief
after almost four moons of returning, cloverpaw had finally finished all her training. her half blind green eyes scanned the clearing until they fell on a familiar pelt. the first warrior they saw, really, so the tabby apprentice was going to take it. the heavily scarred molly stalked over, flicking a tattered ear. "you. do my assessment?" they asked, speaking each word one at a time as they have done for the past several moons.
rookfire felt horrible, genuinely the worst hes probably ever felt without actively losing blood or coughing up his lungs, with fatigue tugging at him and a headache assaulting his tired mind, cloverpaw was met with a set of cold eyes when they approached him. her stuttering or whatever act she was on now was annoying to the highest degree and rookfire could feel his composure slipping, not even bothering with a smile as he stood. "sure he muttered, voice gruff and mildly horse from throwing earlier that day, repeatedly reminding himself why he was doing this. his previous position, almost calling for his return at this point. enforcer. he needed to be a goddamn enforcer. the whole demoted to warrior thing didnt make sense to him anyway, why move him from medicine cat to warrior instead of back to enforcer. irrelevant. for now at least. he had a assessment to suffer through before being able to allow himself to sleep off the exhaustion and lingering nausea. if only the stars damned flickers of cats or predators approaching left him be. vulnerable, it left him goddamn vulnerable. but all for a good cause. no pain no gain or whatever they say.
in order to not break dawnstars rules put in place to keep the clan safe from the owls, rookfire had strung roachfl4re along whom was now lingering behind as the largest of the group led the apprentice out into the middle of the territory. mind briefly moving over the things needed for an assessment, the dark tom internally cursed the fact that he had never had an assessment of his own and missed out on the opportunity of spectating one. couldnt be that hard though, hunting, battle.. what else? stealth. thats it. alright. he could handle that, even in his weakened state. "'ight we're gonna start with huntin', i wanna see a clean kill, dont care what you catch as long as ya dont take forever ta' do it" he ordered before dismissing cloverpaw with a nod and preparing to follow at a distance to watch. rook was a bit unstable on his paws but truly did his best in an attempt at keeping it lowkey enough to go undetected.

cloverpaw portrayed no emotion on her face as rookfire led her and roachflare out of camp. first up was hunting, alright. she could do that. the half-blind tabby nodded, slinking into the shadows and headed off in search of prey.
[roll: 11, 1, 10. success! +1 vole]
it wasn't long before the heavily scarred tom came across a vole. they dropped down into a hunter's crouch, leaving their tail above the ground, but not raised too high. they closed their half blind eye and moved slowly to the prey, inch by inch. once they were close enough, the tabby leaped, emerging from the shadows at the same time and landing on the vole. it let out a squeal but was quickly cut off as the apprentice delivered a killing blow to the neck. prehaps she should go for something else. they buried the vole and headed off again, slinking back into the shadows
[roll: 15, 14, 1. success! +1 squirrel]
after a bit more searching, cloverpaw's eyes fell on a squirrel. she slowly slunk forward in her hunter's crouch. this was the first type of prey she caught during her lesson with dawnstar, and she was going to catch it again. once they were a few tail-lengths away, cloverpaw leaped, landing on the prey. she delivered another killing blow to the neck, a glint of pride in her green eyes as she brought it back over to where she had buried the vole. she dug up the vole and laid the two pieces of prey side by side, awaiting for rookfire to appear once more.

rookfire lingered for a while before leaving ro4chflare behind with a sharp jerk of his striped tail to follow cloverpaw at a distance, observing the apprentices success in catching a vole while fighting off the flickering figures at the edge of his vision and the anxiety that came with them. stars he was so done with this whole thing. almost done enough to swear off their operation as a whole but he wouldnt, this was important after all. in the end, this would be benefitial, just push through the pain goddamn it. cloverpaws stealth was remarkable so it wasnt a big surprise that the vole had no chance to react before the tabbied tom delivered a killing blow. good enough work yop that was enough for him to let them pass this aspect of the assessment. wah wah wah it could be luck. no, rookfire was no goddamn fool. he shook his head in an attempt to quieten the voice squeaking doubt at him at the back of his mind.
despite the fact that rookfire was sure cloverpaw was all good regarding this part of the assessment and would probably count it for stealth as well because why shouldnt he, the young tom practically disappeared at times and that wasnt just because his vision was still swimming from time to time, the warrior didnt interfere as they continued their hunt. instead, he pushed himself off the frozen earth, landing against the trunk of a thick tree and pulled himself up to the lowest branch he could find, probably low enough to jump off later and avoid having to climb down..which was arguably worse than climbing up.
rookfires least favourite prey happened to be the next animal the hopefully soon to be warrior targeted, repeating her hunters crouch and leap as for the vole before returning to the smaller animal buried beneath the tree rookfire was now dangling his tail off. he appeared to have concluded his hunt so rookfire dug his claws into the trunk again, moving himself downwards that way for a few blinks before pushing off and landing in front of cloverpaw. "stealth n huntin' look good. battle n yer done" the dark tom confirmed, eyeing the prey by their paws. he was half tempted to just hop off the tree and land on cloverpaws back or launch himself at her now but that felt a bit too mean to justify. he wouldnt go easy on him but offering cloverpaw to do the first move sounded about right in rooks head.

the heavily scarred tabby apprentice turned to face rookfire as they revealed themself, saying that they would just need to do battle and would be done. cloverpaw nodded and waited a few heartbeats for the older warrior to attack before realizing that she would make the first move. Ideas swirled in the half-blind apprentice's mind. after deciding on her first move, she slunk into the shadows, stalking to where she could face rookfire from the side. cloverpaw closed her half-blind eye to make sure there were no mistakes due to the blurriness of that part of her vision, and took a deep breath. they dropped into a crouch and prepared to leap. she emerged from the shadows as she lept and looked like she was aiming to the head, but at the last minute, changed direction and aimed to the older tom's side in an attempt to barrel him over.
