Spiderpaw waited quietly by the entrance of camp, exactly where she had been told to wait for Heroneye. She was excited, but did her best to act as composed as possible. She was getting to do battle training with one of the lionhearts! Her paws kneaded the dirt. She had so many kinds of additional training and classes she wanted to do. While hunting was the thing she was most excited about, why wouldn't she want to be the most knowledgeable cat she could be?
To her, it felt like it would take forever before she'd get her warrior name. She had to fill that time with something!
She wondered what the training would entail. What was the difference between basic and advanced battle? Sure, she could imagine there were a few tricky things, but at what point did it become advanced? Spiderpaw had so many questions already, but felt nervous about asking. What if she looked dumb? It would be a travesty if her clanmates didn't trust her with anything because they assumed she didn't understand anything!

Heroneye emerged from the warrior's den, shaking the leftover bits of bedding that had gotten caught in her fur overnight. She was to train another apprentice that morning, and she noticed with a bit of alarm that said apprentice was already waiting for the Lionheart by the camp exit.
Usually Heroneye was the one summoning the apprentice, so she was somewhat caught off-guard. She quickly dismissed any thoughts of grabbing a bite to ear or giving herself a quick groom; she couldn't very well keep Spiderpaw waiting, especially since Heroneye didn't know how long she'd been waiting already. She could already see the younger cat kneading at the ground, probably impatiently.
She walked briskly up to the apprentice with a single nod. "Spiderpaw. Seeing as you're already here, we can leave at once." There was a hint of apology in her meow as she quickly lead the apprentice out of camp.

Spiderpaw spotted the enforcer and jumped to her paws, barely containing her excitement. The quiet tabby nodded, trying to keep her voice level. Yes, Heroneye!" She mewed, ready to follow her teacher for the day. She wondered why the older she-cat sounded so apologetic. Come to think of it, Spiderpaw could still smell the moss bedding on her pelt. Did she rush?
The young apprentice wondered how she should feel about that. Did Heroneye rush to make it, this morning? Spiderpaw thought she had gotten there earlier than she was supposed to... she had been so excited that the first crack of dawn had woken her.
Spiderpaw let herself enjoy the fresh scents of the morning as she followed Heroneye, wondering where they would be training. Her mind wandered to what battle training would entail, and the question she had thought of earlier returned to the front of her mind. Should she ask? Oh, would she look dumb if she asked? She really couldn't have that. Maybe she should spend a little longer gauging Heroneye.

Heroneye was leading Spiderpaw towards the usual clearing she used for battle training, her mind now fully awake. It helped, she supposed, that the sun was finally beginning to warm the frozen earth, rising early for what seemed to be the first time in moons--newleaf had come at last.
They had arrived. Turning to the younger cat, Heroneye began, "We'll begin with a short sparring session." She knew that Spiderpaw was looking for something more advanced--but how advanced? In other words, the Lionheart would have to guage the apprentice's skill level before making any assumptions and wasting both their time.
"Imagine that I'm an enemy from another Clan and attack me, claws sheathed," Heroneye continued, her usual spiel. She slipped into a defensive crouched, bracing herself for whatever her "opponent" had in store. "Whenever you're ready."

A cat from an enemy clan... Spiderpaw eyed Heroneye's defensive posture and crouched as well. She wasn't sure what she was doing, with little knowledge from when she played with other kits or asked random warriors, but she was more than willing to give it a shot.
Spiderpaw figured that, between her clumsy but fast legs and Heroneye's experienced and defensive posture, her best bet would be to throw off her opponent's guard and leave her volnurable to any incoming attack.
Spiderpaw finally burst forward, darting to go around Heroneye's right at the last second. She wanted to slip behind the lionheart and tackle her back legs out from under her. After that... well, she would be too surprised that her attack worked at all on Heroneye if she even succeeded at all! She would jump back quickly, too neevous about counter attacks to stay in close.

Heroneye watched the apprentice intently, eyes narrowed and scanning for any sign of movement. Perhaps it was a bit silly to take the informal, diagnostic sparring match so seriously--or perhaps not. Wouldn't most apprentice want a true taste of battle, to be as prepared as possible? One who had gone out of her way for advanced lessons, no less.

Heroneye was ready when Spiderpaw slipped around her. She was quick, but the Lionheart was still able to twirl around, facing the apprentice and dodging the move in one go.
Spiderpaw slipped backwards before Heroneye could counterattack, so she would have to be the one to move forward--generally a good technique, she noted. She crouched back down before leaping towards Spiderpaw, taking advantage of her larger size to jump above the apprentice. She would see if she could land on the apprentice's shoulders. Not too roughly, but perhaps enough to hold her in place for a moment.

Spiderpaw was in awe of the Lionheart's speed. Heroneye seemed to move at a very different rate than her. The blue tabby couldn't imagine being so quick and graceful. She backed off without receiving any kind of backlash, that was great, but she panicked when the larger cat charged.
By the time she had her wits about her again, it seemed that Spiderpaw's legs only wanted to further betray her, tangling up beneath her as she tried to hastily step back. It was within a blink of an eye that the apprenrice felt Heroneye's weight on top of her, a yelp of surprise escaping her maw at the sudden weight as her legs seemed to just give out beneath her.
The tabby tried to twist and kick and snap her jaws, hoping something would land and give her a chance to slip out from under Heroneye and dart away so she could gather her thoughts again. She couldn't help but to panic a bit, not realizing how big the gap between her and Heroneye's experience could have been... well, Spiderpaw didn't see a way she could win. She just wanted to find a way to prove she wasn't useless.

A pang of uncertainty passed through Heroneye as Spiderpaw buckled under the older cat's weight, yelping with surprise. Perhaps Heroneye had gone too far..? Even now, it was hard for her to know what level of force was appropriate. She didn't want to patronize them--they wouldn't learn anything that way--but she also didn't want to actually hurt them. This was just practice, and there was no need to brutalize anyone.
During the period of Heroneye's hesitation, Spiderpaw seemed to come back to life. The Lionheart flinched instinctively as the apprentice's jaws snapped nearby, and Spiderpaw was able to slip away.
Heroneye backed away, watching the apprentice carefully. She wouldn't move; she wanted to give Spiderpaw a chance to strike first, to show what she could do.

She did it! Spiderpaw slipped out from under Heroneye! The lionheart had flinched at Spiderpaw's snapping jaw and moved just enough for the lanky apprentice to slip out from under her. Perfect!
Spiderpaw darted away quickly and soon found her footing again. She could do this. She could do this!
Spiderpaw knew she couldn't just run in and pin Heroneye, that would be far too ambitious for the young apprentice. She needed something else. Something more clever. But what could she do? She needed to think of more than just play fighting with siblings.
Spiderpaw darted forward again, realizing Heroneye would not be attacking again. At least, not yet. The blue tabby darted left, then right to make her attack easier to complete. Shifting so he back would be to heroneye's flank, she lifted onto her front paw's with a mule kick, back paws aimed to knock the lionheart off balance.
Hit or not, Spiderpaw followed up with a few quick swipes at Heroneye's face and neck. She had flinched before, maybe there would be an opening for the apprentice to take advantage of, doubtful as she was about it.

Heroneye followed the apprentice's movements with her gaze. The apprentice seemed to be moving left, then bolted right. The Lionheart was prepared for her to strike with her forepaws, perhaps faking to one side once more before doing so.
However, as Spiderpaw turned her back towards the warrior, it became evident that that was not her intention. A heartbeat too late, Heroneye's eyes flashed with recognition as she saw the beginnings of a back kick.

Heroneye jumped back with surprise at the attack, having been hit with the full brunt of it. Not that she had much time to be shocked, of course; it wasn't long before Spiderpaw had turned back around, launching a frontal offensive. Regaining her composure, Heroneye ducked backwards again, able to dodge most of the apprentice's attacks.
"Alright," Heroneye said at last, breaking the spell of silence that had settled over the clearing. She abandoned her defensive stance, standing up straight to address Spiderpaw. "I believe I've gotten a good impression of your skills. But how would you say you did?" She decided on a different approach this time; perhaps asking the apprentice for her opinion would help clarify her strengths and weaknesses, and what they should focus on for the remainder of the training session.
