hickorysplinter, with a sigh, plopped themself down in a particularly fluffy patch of fronds with a vole and began to chew on it with monotony clear in her face. she was bored, and tired, and everything was stupid and they hated everything just a little bit.

Batflight paced around the territory. Her leg was killing her, but she couldn't stay still. She'd had one conversation with Risingpaw as her apprentice, and the next thing she knew, Dawnstar was pulling her out of the apprentice's den, limp and glassy-eyed.

She was so shaken she didn't notice Hickorysplinter until she was practically on top of her. She jumped back with a startled hiss, tail puffing up like a squirrel's.

Batflight looked at Hickoryspliter with wide eyes, fur still on end. After a moment she seemed to snap out of it.

"Stars, I'm sorry. I wasn't even looking where I was going." She licked her chest fur down. At the question, her gaze darted back to her clan-mate.

How did she even answer that question? She hadn't even really known Risingpaw. She might've been Batflight's first apprentice, but they'd had one conversation before her death, and she was a reassignment at the tail-end of her training anyway. It felt almost... silly for Batflight to be so affected given the circumstances.

"I'm okay," she mewed. "I barely knew her, it hardly feels like my loss to grieve. She left so much family behind, and it was so sudden - I'm sure they're feeling her loss keenly."

' of course it's your loss to grieve! ' the she-cat meowed indignantly. ' it must have been awful. ' her voice dropped to a lower octave and she stared off, as if remembering something terrible. hickorysplinter blinked and the look was gone.

' you have no reason to feel silly for having emotions, alright? when my mother- ' and here, they cut herself off, cleared her throat, and stopped talking. ' sorry. ' her voice had softened again, and she looked down at her paws.

"That's kind of you to say," Batflight mewed half-heartedly. It was one thing to appreciate Hickorysplinter's words, and another to believe them.

She tilted her head, tentatively sitting down next to them. "You don't need to apologise," she mewed. "What were you going to say? About your mother."

subconsciously, hickory knew batflight was talking to her, but her mind was elsewhere. ' sorry- i- my mother? ' hickory sat and started licking at her paw to groom herself. ' i was just- i- when i was.. little. like a kit, my mother, foxglovekiss, was.. terrible to me. '

here she stopped, glancing over at batflight. ' do you want to go somewhere more- private? i can't really- talk about her. around other cats. ' they looked slightly uncomfortable, not wanting to scare batflight away with the details of what foxglovekiss had done to her.

"Of course." Batflight stood up, careful of her tender leg. "Shadow's Break is usually pretty quiet," she suggested. The cat who was there the most had been Elmshadow, and... well, he obviously wouldn't be using it anymore.

She lead the way, slower than she'd usually be to avoid putting pressure on her leg. Once they arrived, she lay down on the mossy ground, avoiding any herbs. Even if Elmshadow couldn't use them anymore, she was sure Larkfire would still need them.

She looked up at Hickorysplinter, ready to listen.

hickory nodded, kneading her paws into the mossy floor. ' when i was a kit .. she was awful. to the rest of the clan, she presented as this amazing queen, and made us pretend that she was too- in public, at least. but we- me and my littermates- knew how bad she was. we went through it. '

here she paused, swallowed, and continued. ' she was an amazing actress. she would constantly tease us, jabbing us with insults only to cover it up with "humor", like it was a joke to her . . she was manipulative, she'd guilt trip us if we dared do something she didn't approve of. ' the cat's eyes welled up but she swallowed back another sob.

' this was all subtle - she showed herself as a protector of the weak, she tried to make you think the world was a dark, horrible place. she painted herself as the only ray of light. ' with that, they finished, and looked up at batflight. ' she's back. at least- i think she is. she's been in my dreams, she keeps saying she'll be back- i don't know what to do. '

Batflight listened on with horror as Hickorysplinter described Foxglovekiss' terrible treatment of them and their littermates.

"I'm sorry. It must have been so hard to go through that, with everyone in the clan believing she was the perfect mother. Are your littermates still around?" she asked gently. Maybe if they were, she could ask her siblings whether they shared in the same dreams. Maybe Foxglovekiss was visiting her dreams, but it would be no surprise if after so long enduring her cruelty, she was simply having terrible nightmares.

"To finally be free of her, and then to have those dreams - I would be frightened too." Batflight wracked her brain for ideas. Maybe visiting the medicine cat? But Larkfire was only recently appointed - she had no idea if the she-cat would have even spoken to StarClan before, or have any advice or solution.
