Mothflame nearly jumped at the shout of her name. She wasn't, well, used to having her name called. Usually when apprentices wanted training, they'd timidly walk over and ask. Not like how... This damp kitten did his introduction. Regardless, Mothflame turned to the apprentice with a smile.

"The best," she chuckled. A lie. She wasn't the best. She'd love to consider herself one of the best, but she knew there were far better fighters in the Clan. She stretched her aching limbs, specifically one of her hind legs. The otters really did a number on her. "Follow me, kid, I prefer to do things... Outside of camp." Where nobody can hear or see her teaching these younglings.
... She had her reasons.

oh stars was this a mistake... uh oh. he was being led out of camp. "yes'm! i've already learned the basics, but i want to fight better!" he nodded, padding behind mothflame. driz, being the naive child he is, doesnt notice the lie. "i heard you killed an otter!"

Mothflame led the apprentice to a secluded part of the territory. An open enough space to fight, but hidden enough so they wouldn't attract anyone. She hummed in response to Drizzlepaw's comments.

"Learnt the basics you say. This'll be easier than I thought," the she-cat murmured, mostly to herself. "Sure did! Me and a couple other cats at the second patrol." There was no time for small talk now, they were here to train, not tell stories.

"Alright, claws out. We'll practise," she unsheathed her own claws, not to use them, but to demonstrate. "The softest parts of a cat is their throat, chest, and belly. That's where you can easily draw the most blood.
When you fight, you want to weaken the opponent before going for the kill. That includes, but isn't limited to, blinding them," she drew a paw across her eyes lightly, mimicking a slash to the eyes. "Disabling their legs," she lightly tapped Drizzlepaw's foreleg in an attempt to lightly trip him. "Pulling at... Or ripping their tail," she lightly nipped at Drizzlepaw's tail, teeth grazing his fur but nothing that could be painful. "Or disorienting them with a kick of dust into their eyes, or a powerful blow to their head." She kicked dust into the air with a forepaw, and tapped Drizzlepaw on the back of his head with a different forepaw.

"That's how you do things the right way." She grinned. "And once you do that, go for the throat. Tear at it, or my favourite, bite down and never let go." Her eyes darkened for a heartbeat, before the spark returned.

"Alright, have you got all of that? Want to do a quick sparring match?" She asked, tipping her head to one side. "Use your claws. It makes things more real. Don't be scared. You'll never win a fight if you hesitate."

he unsheathed his claws as asked, nodding as he listened. fight dirty if needed, thats what he heard. he tapped his paw gently on his throat and chest, he'd need to protect those in a fight.

go for the legs. he kept his paws planted firmly as mothflame tapped him. grab their tail and pull. disorient them with dust. stun them with a blow to the head.

then go for the... throat. for some reason that made him squeamish. but sure, he'd spar.

without warning he leapt to the side of mothflame. dont be scared. dont hesitate. dont-

Mothflame's smile widened at Drizzlepaw showed no obvious signs of hesitation, a good thing to see. She let the blow hit, before jumping to the side and sliding into a battle stance in one fluid motion.

"I know you can do more than that. I want to see more passion. Violence. Anger, if you will." She encouraged. Then with a much less warmer smile, she added, "Imagine... Imagine I was the one who took Poppykit from you." Too much? Nah. There wasn't such thing as too much. If that riled Drizzlepaw up, good. But he needed to get over it. And with that, she leapt forward in an attempt to push down on Drizzlepaw's back and pin him.

stay calm. stay calm. he grit his teeth as mothflame spoke. dont remind me. dont remind me how i wished to be in his place. how he wouldve been a better warrior than me.

stay dead calm. like cattail pond. how the ripples of the pond lap at the edges of the rocks. move fluidly, like water. strike quick and hard, like a river. breathe. breathe. put out the embers of mothflame.

water puts out flames, but he was too inexperienced to beat her, but he could at least try. the spark in his eyes dimmed. "you struck a nerve." he deadpanned.

"i dont want to hear another word out of your mouth about my family." he let out a low growl before ducking underneath mothflames attempt to pin him, he darted forward, whipped around, and darted back to grab onto the warriors' back right leg n. she was limping on the other leg, so why not grab the healthy leg.

Almost instantly, Mothflame could see the tension and the hitch in Drizzlepaw's expression. She'd hit a nerve. Perfect. She could finally see some action out of this little one.

Her paws struck the ground as Drizzlepaw dashed away from her grip, darting behind to grab at her good leg. Oh. Crap. With a hiss, Mothflame dropped to the ground sideways, scrambling to find her footing again. She had shook the earth with her single sentence, and it had caused a tsunami. The worst part? That tsunami was coming to extinguish her flame. But she wasn't going to let that happen, especially not by an apprentice. And no matter if it was a spar or not. There wasn't any battle she'd lose. "Bold move. I like that, kitten." Mothflame grinned, shoving herself onto her paws and darting closer to Drizzlepaw. She swiped a forepaw at the apprentice's head in an attempt to lightly daze him. "You and your family... Get over it, kid. Life is life. Life goes on. And you move on. There's no good is staying in the deep pit they call grief."

she thought this was a game. a starsdamned game. that just pissed him off further. "someone died in front of you, so you poke at others. pathetic" he chided as he let go of mothflames leg.

he leapt backwards to prepare, oh no, he felt a paw hit his face, he staggered back, and snapped; "grief is normal, if you mourn them then their memory lives on! if you bury your emotions then you've failed!"

he clenched his jaw, leaping towards mothflame in an attempt to dig his claws into the flesh on the top of her skull. perhaps he would knock some sense into her with that one.

Mothflame scoffed. The audacity of this kid! Pathetic? Her? She was far from pathetic. And even if she were, she didn't need to hear it from an apprentice.

"Nobody died in front of me. You don't get to make assumptions. Grief is weak. You'd really let someone who's dead keep you from reaching your potential?" She snarled when claws dug into her head, and aimed to kick Drizzlepaw's legs from underneath him with her own leg. "Impressive move, but I want to see more from you. Go for the throat. Pretend I'm... Well... Spring. Enough with your incessant chattering about burying emotions. Get a hold of yourself, kid." If the kick worked, she'd swiftly approach Drizzlepaw's side to grab and again, pin him down.
