Again, it was a tremendous struggle for Vervainpaw to keep his mouth shut while Wormbite talked, itching to ask every question imaginable. So, the red and cream tabby mix resorted to fiddling with her paws to keep from talking. Grey eyes flicking every which way, tail lashing from side to side, and paws obsessively twitching as she hopped from one side to the other. After one of the longest monologues Vervain had ever heard in her life, the apprentice was paired up with... Not Spiderpaw. Hm. Firepaw. The tabby whipped around, energy as high as the flame coloured tom's was, perhaps higher. She had opened her mouth to practically scream at the top of her lungs... But Firepaw beat him to it.
Ugh, Vervainpaw wanted to ambush! Not walk around aimlessly waiting to be ambushed! That sounded dumb. So, the cream and red apprentice grumbled "Can I ambush?" In a rather sulky way, mimicking Firepaw's exact voice. But, she wasn't that sore of a loser, so he nodded, flicking his tail rapidly. "Yup! But you better make it good, because Ima leave you in the dust otherwise!" Big mouth for someone who hadn't had very much training yet. But still, the twinkle in her grey eyes and the spark of friendly competition lightened the insult dramatically.
With an appreciative nod, Sprucepaw began to peel away from the group. She didn't have too long to decide where she wanted to go. Two minutes wasn't all that long, but she supposed that was the point. Wormbite wouldn't want a bunch of apprentices roaming around the clan's territory, should something go wrong. Which nothing would, right? No, now was not the time to be worrying about nothing. She slunk through the marshy land, not moving as fast as she could, on account of trying to find more solid ground or sections of grass to step through.
Still, about a minute in the tortoiseshell paused. Heading in one direction, even with the wavy movement that she had been doing, seemed like a bad idea. In a snap decision, she decided to backtrack a short distance, before veering off westward. Sprucepaw tried to remember Wormbite's suggestions of wider steps as she moved, though she decided to slow her pace. If Spiderpaw managed to get on her trail, she didn't want noise or noticeable movement to be what tipped her off.
SPIDERPAW
Riverclan Apprentice | 9 moons | Lanky, amber eyed, blue-grey tabby she-cat with white paws, chin, and tail tip. Heightened perception: Smell
~~~
Spiderpaw waited for Sprucepaw to disappear before she stood and looked around. She would try at least one thing that Wormbite had offered as an idea. With a splat! Spiderpaw dropped into the mud and rolled around in it to cover her scent, careful not to get any mud in her nose while she did. It wasn't the most comfortable thing to do, especially since she liked keeping her pelt fairly clean and well groomed, but it was hopefully worth it so that she wouldn't be detected.
Spiderpaw stood back up and shook off the excess mud, still feeling uncomfortable covered, before finally moving out after the other apprentice. She kept her steps long yet deliberate as she moved into the dark pines, clinging to the shadows and careful not to make a sound. Her blue-grey fur showed in small patches, mud breaking up her form quite well as she followed Sprucepaw's scent. There was no indication that the other apprentice had used anything to cover her scent like the older apprentice had. This made it far easier for her sensitive nose to keep up and allowed her to move swiftly.
A moment of confusion. There were multiple scent trails at a certain spot, and the apprentice hesitated for a moment as she tried to distinguish the old from the new. She raised her head, but the wind didn't carry a helpful hint for her. Her tail flicked and she picked a path. It was a waste of time, as about twenty seconds in she realized that the trail smelled stronger because the other apprentice had doubled back this way. Spiderpaw's tail lashed with a mixture of frustration and momentary embarrassment. She should've been able to tell the difference!
With a huff, Spiderpaw doubled back and followed the correct trail, carefully slipping far enough away that she wouldn't be upwind of Sprucepaw while still hanging close enough to track. She didn't want to alert the other apprentice to her presence, or else she might lose the round if Sprucepaw makes it back to the starting point once she initiated the ambush.
Once she spotted a flash of red, Spiderpaw froze and watched, holding her breath for a moment before very softly exhaling. Now to get in close. She stalked fully downwind of Sprucepaw so that, even with the mud dulling her scent, the other apprentice wouldn't have the chance to smell her. She carefully avoided puddled and pine needles as she moved, keeping to sturdy roots and rocks so she could avoid making a sound. For now, she watched and started formulating a good plan to catch Sprucepaw completely off guard.
It would be a lie to say that Sprucepaw wasn't on edge as she weaved through the boggy land. Knowing that Spiderpaw was bound to find her eventually really made her paranoid. Part of her wanted to find a place to hide and set her own ambush, but she was supposed to be getting back to where the lesson started. And part of her felt like it was better to move. With the daylight out, her mix of dark and bright fur made her feel like she stood out too much.
Green eyes scanned the area as she started making her way back to the starting point. Sprucepaw decided against going back the way she came. After all, that seemed like a great way to get ambushed. So she took a wide bend, trying to snake between tall grasses and brush to obscure herself. It was between two bushes that she momentarily paused. Did she smell something, or did her mind make it up? It was better to be safe than sorry.
Staying low to the ground, Sprucepaw spotted a few stray items. An acorn, a few pebbles. Nothing that really mimicked the sound of paws, but maybe she could still use it for a distraction. She scooped the pebbles into her paw, awkwardly balancing them so they didn't drop before trying to toss it out before her. With any luck, it could sound like she was darting in that direction. Who knew, with how that was so different from throwing a mossball. But Sprucepaw waited a few heartbeats before backing away, trying to cut a new path back to the starting point.
┆彡 black-furred tall & sinewy tom with vitiligo resulting in white speckles covering his fur; heavily scarred across his entire body, missing half his left ear. his eyes are a light cloudy amber due to his blindness --- has protruding fangs that overlap his bottom lip & walks with a prominent limp. smells like spicy citrus with an underlying petrichor scent. speaks in a low & raspy monotone voice. ✮
➺ the oriental could not recall the last time he had babbled endlessly for so long. perhaps it was a blessing in disguise to have an odd amount of apprentices. he would not be left here simply bored out of his mind. his ears twitched at the sound of approaching pawsteps, turning to face seapaw.
wormbite was not incredibly surprised that the other wanted to hide first. he supposed it was best. he could offer further points if the other was first. with a nod of his head he spoke, ”you are free to start when you are ready. “
