▁ ▂ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ █it seemed the snake was his...mmm...he settled down and began slitting a piece of his own snake. his long claws caught its scale, dug in and he began the cutting, eyes focused on it as he listened to the sound of its soft belly ripping and tearing, he licked his lips as his claws finally had it open. he lifted his paw and began to lick off any blood from it since he knew this wasn't a clean job. █ ▇ ▆ ▅ ▄ ▂ ▁

Scorpionpaw! The initial happiness that lit up his eyes at his sister's arrival dims when he hears he has to share. Whaaaaaaa! Why couldn't she get her own -- oh wait, she just wanted to flay one of his pieces. That was fine with him. Weepingpaw nudges the crow over to Scorpionpaw without a fuss. He supposed he should let her have a few bites after they're done skinning; he doesn't want her to go hungry.
"Deerclaw! Hello!!!" Weepingpaw returns the greeting enthusiastically when he sees who comes to join them. He eyed the prey he had from the prey pile, noting the snake. He hadn't known there was a snake in there, he hadn't looked all that hard. He was tempted to ask the older cat if he wanted to trade, but he glanced at his sister and thought better. She seemed a little upset with him when she first saw him, but that might have been his eyes playing tricks on him. She was fine now. Still, he wouldn't tempt upsetting her.

Deerclaw was going to ignore her, so she was going to ignore him! Positioning herself more in between the old apprentice and her brother, she'd face Weepingpaw with a small smile and pulled the crow closer to her. This'd be fun. She liked pulling the feathers off these things.
Then, the warrior started speaking. Scorp would watch, curiousity making her claws itch to give it a try. Then, after what felt like forever, she was able to! "Looks like we're partners, Weepers, let's give it a go," she spoke simply, focusing on the bird at her paws. Scorp would get to work, plucking feathers away from the areas she wanted to slice her claws through. Once that was done, she trailed her claw down the bird as she was instructed, connecting the lines and peeling away the skin. Her amber eyes were alight with interest the entire time, a certain part of her being feeling accomplished with this task. Something she didn't realize she'd felt since the day she tackled Mama successfully.
As she peeled away the skin from the body, her eyes drifted to Weepingpaw, making sure he was doing okay. The last severance and then she'd finally pipe up to make sure he was fine. "Weepers, good? Need help?"
rookfire closed in on the group already gathering around stemstone. young cat. thered been a good few events hosted by rather young warriors, recent graduates, as of recent. he wondered if there was anything in particular causing such a shift. it was unlikely to have been the enforcer challenges, though that might incentivice certain apprentices and young warriors to try harder.. unlikely because quite literally nothing had happened when him and sleepysunrise skipped the warrior step entirely.
silver eyes caught on a dark tom seemingly talking to himself. a new member. eyes furrowed slightly, yet the enforcer sat silently only keeping an eye on the apprentice infrequently. deerclaw seemed to have taken a liking to appearing wherever rookfire went, or maybe weepingpaw just so happened to go the same places rook did. weepingpaw.. well, he was sort of dull, maybe that balanced out deerclaws unpleasant personality.
rookfire had little interest in actually participating actively and picked up a bird instead. he hadnt eaten yet, and birds were something of mystery to him so far. itd be amusing to watch none the less. fascinating even. the way cats recoiled at the sight of flesh and guts. like they didnt eat the very same. skin seperating from flesh.. rookfire moved the feathers out of the way with a single claw before cutting around the birds neck like usual.

Sleepysunrise hadn't been particularly interested in joining, after all, she knew how to flay. She was largely self-taught, at least in the basics, but the young cat knew how to separate skin from flesh quite well by now. It wasn't until she spotted Rookfire settle down with a bird that she was prompted to drop from the heights of branches with deft little paws supporting her drop to the ground, whiskers twitching, and eyes focused on the feathers being plucked out.
She slunk up next to the increasingly familiar tom, quiet and without much fuss, settling down nearby to watch the repetitive process. Her eyes were mostly on the bird and its increasingly exposed skin, expression unreadable and dull, though eyes bright as ever with mild focus. She always did like birds for a many reason beyond simply the colours of their feathers, in particular the way their wings allowed them to soar across the sky.
Stemstone nodded as the pairs...well, paired up. But some were more productive than others. He grumbled, unable to keep his face from...making a face at the lack of response from some of the -paws. "Twilightpaw, Houndpaw, Blackpaw! Wake up, eh?" He called, tail lashing somewhat. But he looked at the other groups and nodded approvingly. "That's good work, Shadepaw!" He mewed happily. Yes, happily. Stemmy was...happy. Passing on his skills was...fun! He couldn't suppress his grin.
"A'ight! Now those of you with the bottom half done let your partner work the top half!" He mewed, lifting his voice to allow himself to be heard. "Imma walk you through it again, so pay attention up here for a moment!" He waited until all the peepers were focused on him, giving a firm nod when he was certain he had everycat's attention.
"This is gonna be real similar to what we just did. This time the other cat in your group will do the same thing - if your prey has paws you'll wanna cut around the paws, up the shoulder, and then 'round the head in a wide circle." He described, drawing the motions in the air for all to see with a claw. "If ya got somethin' like a snake, no big deal. Same motions, just got no paws or shoulders to cut around. So you'll wanna cut like this." He mewed, cutting around the top of the snake. "Keepin' the head is optional. But if you stink up the den with it your denmats probably won't like it." He added with a chuckle. Some dark...flaying humor. If that was a thing.
"Next part I want each partner to take a side. You'll cut down the side of your prey, right or left take a pick. If it's got paws, you're goin' from front paw to back paw, slicing downwards to connect the circular cuts you made earlier." He once more demonstrated the motion. "Those of ya with prey with no paws, congratulations! You're pretty much done! Connect the cuts you made on the top and bottom like so," he connected the cuts he'd made to his snake as a demonstration, "'n then once both sides are done you can peel the skin back like this!" Stemstone hooked a claw carefully into the skin and tugged it back, patient.
"This part takes a steady claw and patience. Otherwise you could rip the skin and then that defeats the look." He explained, giving a small shrug at the end. Maybe they didn't care about that like he did? Whatever. Once he lifted the skin from the belly of the snake, he held it up to demonstrate it. "Prey with legs, you should be able to get it all up in one piece. For snakes, you only wanna make the cuts along one side and then you peel the skin off all in one go. Or if ya just want the top for the pattern, just take the top." He mewed with another passive shrug.
"Totally depends on what you're lookin' for! Once you've got your skin you can keep it, gift it, or donate it to the nursery or elders. And make sure to eat your prey!" He raised his tone slightly with that last point. Narrowing his eyes to drive the point home. "Dun flay nothin' unless you're gonna eat it! We don't waste prey in this clan!" He gave a judgemental little snort, but then his facial features lit up again. Ah, this brought back memories. Stemstone used what he remembered from Mistlewhisker's lesson to run his, he wondered if she was watching and caught that? Would she be mad? Like he copied her? Oof...hope not. "Once you're done if you wanna share, I'd love to see you're work! And if you have any lingering questions, now's the time!" He waved his tail, an indication that he was opening the floor to questions.
He of course noticed Rookfire and Sleepysunrise skulking around the edges, but he wasn't sure what to do with them. Surely they didn't need this lesson, were they observing him? He felt nerves and pride flutter against his chest- oh wait no, that was his heart. It was pounding. He was...nervous? No, you don't get nervous! Stemstone almost snorted at himself, that would be pathetic. They were clearly just observing him, maybe even assessing his teaching abilities!? Calm down Stemstone...they're not gonna recommend a warrior for mentor who can't keep his cool at his own teaching event! Somehow, Stemstone maintained his composure, flashing a toothy grin as he waited to see if any -paws needed to accept his invitation.

"I'm here, I'm here!" He had wasted some time observing the others, who seemed way more at easy than him about the topic, before returning and pairing up with this cat named Twilightpaw. "I get the twilight part, but I still cannot get why the youth are all 'paws. And why did they call me Crowpaw? I mean, not that I dislike it, but I would have preferred to be called Blackpaw at this point! Grrr." He was complaining silently in his head, but he also knew this wasn't the time.
Instead, he turned on the vole he was provided with and he prodded his partner with his paws, pushing gently many times on her back to wake her up. "C'mon, bud, we're slow!" Gosh, he wasn't good with team work and he knew that. Alright, Black, let's do that...
He stretched out one claw with his toes, careful not to use all his paw in one go, and tore the skin apart from the vole's throat to... well, the tail. There wasn't much work to divide in two on this one, so he decided to do something different. "You can do the back, and then grab one side with your mouth. I'll take the other and we'll pull together, gently." He instructed, patiently.
While he waited for his partner, he studied the others' work. It was... definitely better than his. He had almost tore one wing apart from the body, and the vision of that naked bird was most gruesome even to him. He wasn't used to such... practices.
Weepingpaw purred softly after learning he was paired with Scorpionpaw. They quickly jumped into the lesson. Weepingpaw tried to be attentive, he really did, but Stemstone was going a little fast for the apprentice. There was a lot of stuff to remember. Weepingpaw was getting better at remembering stuff, but if there was too much too fast left him lost.
So flip it, he did that with the squirrel, cut a circle in the back leg, done! However, everything said and done after that was lost to Weepingpaw. He couldn't explain what it was about the direction that confused him, but confused he was. So he was more than pleased when the smarter sibling offered to help him.
"Help, please. What now, do I?" He asked Scorpionpaw, showing her his squirrel. His cuts were sloppy and not completely connected, and the circle cut into the leg wasn't a circle, but he had done his best. Weepingpaw found that flaying took a lot of paw control, and he wasn't great with it, needing a lot more practice. Stemstone was already moving on to more direction, and Weepingpaw felt a little rushed, which made his eyes watery. Was he going too slow? This was hard, he wasn't sure if he liked this.
