Not too long after the conversation that'd put this idea into its head, Maggotpaw winds up doing what they usually do: whatever they want. Mosspaw's just being too nervous about stuff that doesn't matter, is all, and Maggotpaw isn't going to let a newly-claimed friend of theirs back himself down from getting what he wants all because of a little thing like getting in trouble. Which won't even be a thing now, because Maggotpaw is making itself the one to start this off, and Maggotpaw is very sure that it knows how to do this cleverly enough to make everyone like doing it.

As much as you can be made to 'like' dwelling on a sad subject, anyhow.

"WINDCLAN! Everybody listen to me now, okay?"

The scrawny cat's shrill cry upsets an otherwise lovely dusk. They're sat at the edge of a very pitiful hole (more of a gentle dip) scraped into the ground by inept little paws and decorated with a few nice things; feathers freshly plucked from available prey, whatever field flowers grow within reach around the clearing. Maggotpaw is not a digging-cat, but that's fine, because this grave is only a pretend-thing anyhow.

"It is...hard...to miss someone."

Maggotpaw's sharp, ugly face screws up with a look of concentration. They didn't practice the pitch, going into this. They're winging it entirely. This is not the kind of event that Maggotpaw would ever care to hold if not to satisfy a friend, so it's a struggle to think of just the right words needed to coax out participants.

"Our lives are all about living together and talking together and celebrating together. So when somebody goes away, that means you can't talk to them anymore. You don't sleep or eat with them anymore either. And when they leave forever without dying, that means you never got to celebrate their life, and probably you never even celebrated how much you miss them. Even if maybe they're not dead. And if they did die...if they did die, I am making it allowed that you can be sad about that even if you celebrated. Even if you had a vigil and talked about it to everyone."

You know. Just in case you were wondering if Maggotpaw gives you permission to grieve.

"When a cat becomes a dead-cat, or when they go away forever, then all they are anymore is a story about a cat. You keep stories inside of you, but you have to talk to make them live. As long as you tell the stories then you can keep a cat alive. They can live right between your teeth. That's the closest anybody can ever be to you, did you know? Right here." They bare their little teeth demonstratively.

"So if you miss a cat, I made you their grave. Their body is feathers and flowers now. Even if you don't know if they're dead, or even if they have a real grave. I want you to tell their stories so that you can have them close. Then we will be quiet for a vigil together. And then we will go to sleep. Okay?"

 

maggotpaw is inviting you come speak about a missing or deceased loved one, share their stories or confess your grief, or sit in quiet support of those who do.

This was..... A new idea, but a good idea, and Crowtooth felt his heart thud in his chest as his mind flashed to cats from his past. Padding over the tom rumbles. "This.... This is a wonderful plan Maggotpaw. Time moves fast an' its easy ta ferget or ta be left as the last one ta remember yer loved ones. An' they deserve ta be remembered.


I myself 'ave a few good cats who died long before most o' ya were born that made me the cat I am today an' are the reason windclan is as it is. Id like fer them ta be known, remembered." The tom joined the group, briefly laying a tail atop the apprentices shoulders in comfort before loafing and declaring.


"Ill be talkin' 'bout a good few if thats ok. Creekdash, Stagleech, Wolffang, an' Bravebird."

Cardinalpaw jumped as Maggotpaw yelled to the clan. They lifted their head slowly as the apprentice spoke. The tom sat up eventually, after several moments of debate. Maybe..Heatherpaw, if he would allow himself. They missed her so much, it hurt to think about. A deep pit in his stomach. But, enough of his dead sister. He didn't exactly like the idea of speaking too much about her anyways. He started stuttering and stumbling over his words and then just inevitably falls silent. It was simply too much. So he would listen. And hopefully comfort someone. Who really knew, to be honest. Or, his parents. But there wasn't much to grieve there, hm?

Cedarpaw didn't really have anyone to mourn or miss. He didn't miss his parents. He hasn't lost anyone that close to him. However, he was willing to listen to others. It would do him good to have more social interactions.

Cottonpaw was loafing in the clearing when he heard a familiar voice call out to him. The bob-tailed apprentice made his way over cautiously, slowly on his previously injured leg. It still didn’t walk quite right, not as fluid as before. But he remained thankful that it was still, somewhat functional. It was Maggotpaw, speaking in a shrill cry above the usual chatter.

Cottonpaw listened closely as he spoke about how hard it was to lose someone and his heartstrings immediately began to pang. He certainly couldn’t talk with those he’d lost, he had no chance at all. His birth mother was nothing more than a fuzzy, blurred memory lost to age. But Maggotpaw had created a grave, the chance to share his story. But that stung his throat, Cottonpaw didn’t know his mother’s story, his siblings didn’t get a chance at a story. But the apprentice felt the urge to say something, if he was allowed. To say anything. He’d like to hold a vigil for them, a vigil to what remained of their memories.

His whole day felt like it had been turned upside down within an instant, he listened to those around him listing off names and his heart swelled deeper. He didn’t know their names, he didn’t know their names, he didn’t know their names. Tears sprung forth into his eyes as he began to sniffle and blubber, as quietly as possible so as not to disturb the others.

He raised a paw to attempt to stem the flow and it did bit by gradual bit. He remembered his promise to himself to be brave and strong, and eventually all that showed on his face was a wobbly bottom lip. He lifted each of his paws one by one, praying to Starclan for the strength to do so. Willing himself to say anything, to ask the question.

The youngsters maw opened then closed, then opened again.

”I.I.I w.w.w.w.would l.l.like t.t.to t.t.talk a.b.b.bout m.m.m.y b.b.b.b.b.b.b.birth m.m.m.mama, and s.s.s.siblings i.if I.I c.c.could?” His voice felt weak and lumpy in his throat, but his determination was clear. Maybe holding a vigil, speaking his peace. Would be the final thing he could let go, to be at ease.

To grieve for someone you never really knew.

Mosspaw trotted up to Cottonpaw after seeing him struggling to speak and meowed gently, “Hey Cottonpaw, would you like to sit with me? I’m saying goodbye to my mother as well, and I need someone to comfort me as well.” Mosspaw hoped that Maggotpaw didn’t mind that he was supposedly seeking support from someone other than Maggotpaw, but Mosspaw could see that Cottonpaw needed someone by his side, and maybe having the task of comforting someone else would ease his grief.

Lightnight hesitantly padded forward....he wanted to speak about Softfeather, he wanted to share how he wanted kits and now with the love of his life, finally achieved his long given up om dream of being a father.

The ticked she-cat moves forward to the crowd. She couldn't think of any late cats whom she met before their death, but it wouldn't hurt when Carppaw would heed to the other cats telling tales about their deceased clanmates or such.
