and the code. he likes the code. jackdawcrest likes doctrine. he likes rules. he likes to have something else to tell him how he should behave and how he should feel. life is much nicer, simpler, and cleaner that way. life is good that way.

what might any cat know about him? — mild-mannered, courteous, calm. boring. good for a meaningless chat or a quick training session. difficult to scare. almost always smiling, just a little bit. generally a pleasant fellow, but it isn't unheard of for him to dig his heels in and refuse to budge if something isn't going the way he thinks it should. annoying about rules and etiquette. his compliments ring hollow, and much of what he says feels rehearsed somehow.

what might not be widely known? — obsessive, neurotic, fanatical. he will never snap because he is not allowed but he just hates it when things aren't being done the right way. he will hold every grudge of his tightly to the grave. he's a passive aggressive little thing. very self-righteous, fairly petty. it doesn't take much to ruin his day. there are many hills that he is bound and determined to die on.

so is he evil or what? — mostly he is just insufferable.

this should be a cat that would have cared enough for clan etiquette, the code, etc., to ensure that jackdawcrest was taught, but they are not expected to be the reason why he's Like That. he did that all to himself. jackdawcrest will hold this cat in high regard no matter how they might feel about him.

see above for parents; similar deal. siblings, bear his age in mind, but i don't mind him having half-siblings or siblings from different litters.

up to two. he will be rigid and stern, but not abusive. he is also available to train those who already have mentors.

mentioned prior: he's pretty pleasant at face value, if a little tedious to deal with. jackdawcrest loves himself some banal, meaningless chitchat. it's easier to be friendly with him than it is to be friends with him.

he's not going to be everybody's favorite guy. he wouldn't instigate a fight openly, but he's allergic to keeping his mouth shut about certain things.

You know, I was just thinking about how Sprucepaw needs a mentor reassignment...

So I shall offer her up as an apprentice (after a meeting, but you know how it is)! Sprucepaw is... Well, a pretty introverted cat. Polite, sure, but awkward. Girl has big aspirations of wanting to be a lionheart some day, as she feels they should be the pinnacle of warriors in the clan. Really, she just wants to be a reliable cat. That means being reliable, skilled, honorable and someone who follows the warrior code. So the two could definitely bond over a love for the words.

Of course, self doubt tags along with all these lofty goals and ideals. Sprucepaw is aware that she's an apprentice and is learning, but should she not be the best that she can be now? She'll be 8 Moons in a week, and already has a few lessons underway.

Okay so, hear me out. I offer you both Irisdream and her daughter Kitepaw - Irisdream as a former mentor and Kitepaw as perhaps a familiar/friendly face? Irisdream’s mother was a similarly obsessive cat who was manipulative and emotionally and mentally abusive. This has left Irisdream working through her OCD. While she has taken to willfully trying to rebel against her mother’s teachings now, at the time that she trained Jackdaw she would’ve been strict with him, but also maternal - as she has always actively tried to avoid passing on her mother’s ways to others. But she can’t always help it.

Her relationship with Kitepaw was strained until recently, now they are closer. But before Iris was so scared of screwing up her daughter the way her mother did with her that she kept Kitepaw at arm’s length. Regardless, Kitepaw has picked on having neat and tidy manners. She does struggle with anxiety, and still has a bit of a stutter. Her posture isn’t always perfect due to her lack of confidence, but her manners are impeccable and her work ethic unquestionable.

If you agree to go this route, it would be interesting to see what Jackdaw would think of Iris’s more recent life developments, as a lot has happened in recent moons! It’s canon to Iris’s lore that her family was considered up-standing with some prestige, so whether Jackdaw feels like she’s betraying that image by moving away from her mother’s teachings or not is up to you! You can also decide what kind of influence he’ll have on Kitepaw’s development (if any), and whether or not he sees her as kin or just the daughter of his mentor (since her and Iris wouldn’t have appeared close at the time and wouldn’t have interacted much).

Kitepaw is currently 15 moons (I need to update her bio for this month), but Irisdream would have continued to train Jackdaw even having recently given birth to her daughter. What opinions he drew from the distance between Irisdream and Kites (at the time Kitekit) is entirely up to you!

I would encourage you to take a skim through Iris’s interactions with Wavebreaker in her thread tracker (linked in my signature), as that’s where most of the family history is discussed openly. Some of Kitepaw’s posts also go over her strained relationship with her mother, and of course you can skim through the development of Irisdream and Duskleaf’s romance (spoiler alert: they’re adorable).
