Re: RiverClan Territory
Duskclaw of RiverClan
35 moons
Duskclaw lead the way, looking for a larger brook than the one he tossed Claypaw into yesterday. As the dark tom walked, he moved close to Floodsight. "Claypaw is a bit...mouse-brained...just learned how to swim and is far too confident." Duskclaw glanced back at his apprentice before focusing back on Floodsight. "Watch her around water. If she goes under only StarClan knows if she can come back up."
Heroneye watched as Seapaw raced foreward, her eyes fixed on his movements and tense to dodge away again. It seemed like he was about to pass by her right side, but suddenly he began to race to the left and attempted to leap from there.
[ Heroneye rolled a three out of ten. ]
Heroneye sensed the change a heartbeat too late, and before she could duck out of the way or resist the move in some other way, Seapaw had managed to leap onto her back again. At this, Heroneye once again shook the apprentice off and turned to address them.
"You seem to have gotten the hang of that as well," she appraised with a quick nod. "With that, I would like to move on to the final stage of this battle training now: proper sparring. While you've gotten a taste of that during the previous exercise, I would like to finish by giving a clearer view of what a real exchange between warriors on a battlefield might look like.
"Imagine that we're in a battle, and I'm an outsider or a warrior another Clan. Try to attack me, be it with moves we've learned today, or something of your own." For the final time that day, Heroneye crouched down, readying herself for whatever moves Seapaw might throw at her. While she wasn't going to brutalize the apprentice, obviously, she also didn't want to hold back too much, for the sake of Seapaw's learning. This time, she wouldn't be bested so easily (if she could help it!).
"Whenever you're ready."
(apologies for any delay, i've been sick these past few days and have just begun to feel back to normal ^^)

Yes! His plan worked, and his paws finally met fur. They tumbled down to the ground softly, confidence boosted. Now they were onto the final stage. The final stage? He tilted his head to listen as best he could. A spar. Oh... They gulped, trying their hardest to look semi-confident. A real exchange between warriors on a battlefield - now that was scary. He wasn't sure he ever wanted to experience that for real. But, luckily, this was a fake battle, so there would be no claws, and Heronbite wouldn't hurt them (or vice versa). They took a deep, slow breath as they readied into their best battle stance. Just breathe, it'll be okay.
Heroneye asked them to attack her, so they supposed there was no way around making the first move. Goodness, they weren't all too sure what to do. Perhaps a basic hit, like the one Heroneye taught him earlier... Yes, that'd do. They leaned into their crouch, before bursting forward to swipe at Heroneye's face, claws sheathed.

Claypaw followed after the two warriors, more than happy to be out of camp again. Two days in a row at that! It doubled the amount of time she'd been away from camp. She was good too, not slowing them down and only commenting on a bird flying overhead or a cool looking stick on the ground. The latter she left behind, though it saddened her. Seemingly oblivious to her mentor's comments, she chimes in, "So, how d'we know where's a good spot to find fish?"

"Come on, don't go too hard on her." Floodsight replied sharply as a reminder, with a small nudge to Duskclaw's side. Admittedly, she wasn't really the best at swimming at first. It took her and Sunheart, in their apprentice days, eons of training to even get used to the water. To have the ego at least meant that the little one was not afraid to try. She continued softly, "Practice makes perfect, and that's what a mentor is for- to teach her the ways."
The silver cat shuffled a little further from Duskclaw to make room for the little one to join in. Can't have the apprentice go missing mid way, could they? Her stormy eyes was warm when she gaze downwards at Claypaw as they strolled through RiverClan's territory. "Well...a good place to fish would be a good place for them to live. Don't you agree? Somewhere they can hide and some place where there is food. Most days, a calm stream or pond is your best bet, but when it gets closer to Leaf-fall, the larger rivers are filled with salmon. Though harder to catch, they make a hearty meal. Delicious too~"

Duskclaw dipped his head a bit at Floodsight's sharp reminder. Without much to say he continued to lead, occasionally stopping to sniff and listen. After a while he stops on a rock and listens for a good few heartbeats before continuing down a small cliff, a decent sized brook flowed below. "There should be fish here." The colossus stopped about a paw-length from the edge of the water. He looked back at Claypaw. "Claypaw, what's the first rule of water?"
"Calm water, got it." Claypaw said with a nod. Then she heard the words 'big salmon' and 'difficult to catch' and her amber eyes widened. There was a little pop in her step after that. Leaf fall was a bit away sure, but by then she'll be great at fishing. The salmon better watch out when she goes out hunting! She let out a low giggle at the thought.
As they got to the brook, Claypaw looked around. Like she was actually considering where they were. So places like this would be good for catching fish. Thankfully she wasn't so distracted that she missed Duskclaw's question. "Uh... you gotta respect it. So don't go splashin' around, or the water'll leave you tired. Is there a second rule?"

She grinned at the duo's dynamic; slightly concerned mentor and the ever so outgoing apprentice. Reminded her of herself and Aspenpaw back in the days. As tough as Duskclaw usually makes himself out to be, there was still concern riddled in his speech which puts Floodsight at ease. The silverish cream coloured she-cat found herself stopping at the brook Duskclaw had found them. A clear pool of water that flowed against the intertwining rocks. Oh how she missed RiverClan. It wasn't the loud running rivers and storms that made up her love for her clan's land, but the gentle sounds of rivers and forever expanse of the sea they had. She'd never really realize how she missed this until she found herself millions of miles away. But her love for it went both ways- afterall, the rapids that took her sister still tugs at her.
"Second rule? Don't drown." Floodsight replied in amusement, along with a hint of seriousness. She meant it, but it was honestly the rule to swimming. The silver cat turned to Duskclaw wondering if he had a second rule that he taught Claypaw.

Stagheart was quiet as he watched Starrypaw, placing his dead fish down on the bank and observing. The apprentice was patient, he noted. That was good. Especially for an art like fishing, one needed much patience; it seems he wouldn't have to coach her much on that.
When her first couple attempts slipped from her grasp, he let out a sigh into a chuckle, nodding knowingly. "I feel it. Those fellers like to be quicker than snakes 'n slippier than slugs. Y'just gotta make sure y'can get a hook grip with yer claws — if y'can manage to snag 'em on anything, the fish is yours," he meowed, keeping his voice low so as not to disturb the other fish swimming by.
Finally, that last fish was the kicker. Stagheart's eyes widened a bit in pleasant surprise as the frustrated apprentice finally managed to hook her prize. It landed on the bank, briefly stunned, and she was quick to nip its spine. A rough purr of approval rumbled in the back of his throat as he nodded, eyes gleaming. It was always fun to watch a young cat catch their first fish.
"That's it! Good job, kid," he huffed, giving her a nod. "It takes awhile to get used to, but y'got the technique down now 'n know y'can do it. Usually I gotta teach 'paws more patience 'n timin' before they can catch their first, but yer a natural."
He meant the praise; many apprentices could be gung ho about the process and find themselves lashing out too early. Or, some others would overthink it and wait far too long. Starrypaw seemed to be a near-perfect moderation of the two.
Stagheart padded over and gently prodded the fish, letting out an appreciative hum. "This one's a good size, too. We'll make sure you carry this one nice 'n proud on our way back to camp." His blue eyes flicked back to her, grinning at the excitement he could still see in her eyes. "Let's try for another one, yeah? If yer up for it. It's good to get yer muscles used to the feelin' as much as ya can. We'll see if y'can manage to get the next catch in one or two tries this time."
He didn't have much to critique her on, really, which was a nice surprise; so he'd simply watch her closely this time to help fine-tune any minor details she may have to clean up her form or technique. But the large tom had a good feeling that he wouldn't need to correct too much.
For not being RiverClan-born, Starrypaw seemed right at home in the water.
Starrypaw smiled genuinely at the muscular brown tom. She felt so at easy with him... that for a moment, a thought bolted through her and her expression clouded. She wished Stagheart was her real father. Wait, where did her real father end up?
She knew she'd seen him before coming to Riverclan, and maybe even before the before that, but... she didn't remember. He wasn't nice, that was a feeling she had... a strong, curious feeling. Oh, if only she'd been born in Riverclan... things would've been different. Easier.
"T-thank you.." She replied, trying to get a grasp of her thoughts again. She needed to concentrate, now. Focus, focus starrypaw!
The thin fish were passing in the flowing waters, though it did take them a while to appear again after she'd taken one out of the river. They were so shiny, so beautiful.
She lunged again, this time missing. She did it again, again and again, but she knew she wouldn't be able to catch anything if she didn't focus. Breathe. She breathed. Slowly, calmly. Waited. She waited a few minuted, then ten again. She liked the silence, and didn't feel at unease with Stagheart even if they didn't talk.
He respected her time and her silence, and that meant the world for her.
She closed her eyes.
Then her paw, claws outstretched, hooked a small fish and took it out.
She did it again, missing lots of times in the middle, but when she was tired there was a small pile of glimmering scaled-creatures at her side.
She looked at Stagheart, in search of approval. Curious eyes waited patiently with an expectative look.

Duskclaw nodded towards Floodsight. "That's a very good rule 2, yes." He walked into the water, and signaled Claypaw to follow with his tail. Stopping in the shallower water he waits for Claypaw. "Fishing is tricky, Claypaw. The fish isn't where it is, but somewhere else depending on where you look at it. Only StarClan knows why that is. Floodsight, would you like to demonstrate?"
Seapaw quickly began the sparring match, opting to begin with a relatively simply forward strike. Heroneye tensed to dodge aside and duck around the apprentice's outstretched paw, and--
[ Heroneye rolled a seven out of ten. ]
Seapaw's paw grazed the side of her head, though she was able to avoid most of the attack--granted, she likely would have had a scratch or two from the apprentice's claws had this been a real battle. Regardless, Heroneye was able to recover quickly, and it was her turn to levy an attack at the apprentice. She wondered briefly how he might respond; this was the first time today he'd be having this sort of two-way interaction.
In any case, Heroneye imagined that Seapaw might be dazed or temporarily lose his balance after missing, so she would try to take advantage. She rushed back towards the apprentice in an attempt to shove him over or at least further distract him (not too roughly, though, if she could help it).
