Duskclaw lead Claypaw to a small stream cutting through the RiverClan territory. Most of it was too shallow to swim, but there were several wider and deeper parts where the water moved slowly. Duskclaw sniffed the water before turning to face Claypaw, standing tall like a soldier going to war. "What is the first rule of water, Claypaw?"
Claypaw kept pace with Duskclaw, eyes wide as she looked around at the scenery. It looked pretty different out here, away from camp. She was good though, and didn't run off chasing a dragonfly that buzzed past. Why were they stopping? Oh, it looked like they were here. Claypaw was expecting something more like a river. Ah well, she'll have to show off to Duskclaw before that. "Uh... That water's wet?" her head tilted. What kind of question was that? "Or that it likes t'move?"

"Those are truths. The first rule of water is respect." Duskclaw's voice somehow got more serious. He really wants to drill this point into Claypaw's skull. "Water is faster than you, stronger than you, larger than you, and it will not forgive mistakes. Before you swim, you need to know if the water will allow you to swim." Duskclaw poked the slow moving water with one of his large paws, creating small ripples in the natural pool. "This water is calm and safe. It is the easiest to swim in."
The rusty tom shook the water off his paw and sat up. "Now, would you like to learn to swim the easy way or the fun way?"
[Note: "Fun way" is Duskclaw picking up Claypaw by the scruff and tossing her in.]

Truths. rules. Was there really much of a difference between the two here? Claypaw didn't know, and certainly didn't care. She watched as Duskclaw tested the water, and nodded along. For a brief moment, it seemed like her energy was reigned in to take in the lesson. The stream seemed to be like the one in camp, except you could actually swim in this one. The camp one was fine, so of course this one would be too.
Any calm she appeared to have evaporated when the offer was made. This guy could have fun!? The answer seemed obvious in her mind. "Fun way, duh! What's gonna make it fun?"
(Tell her something's fun and she'll give it a try lol)

Marigoldpaw nearly shrunk in on herself, her posture tightening. "Uh, I'm sure I can uh still go out." She glanced at her paws. It was only the elders den, right? She'd only be out for awhile, moss was pretty easy to find. Her hazle eyes glanced to Lilacpoppy. "We should be uh... Uh going, right?" Hopefully this whole thing wasn't too much of a bother, she was already running out of time.
Marigoldpaw, wanting to break away at the tension in the air (or maybe she was just imagining it...), forced a smile and a suggestion. "Wanna race? See who can uh get the most moss?" She figured it would be fun. Marigoldpaw hadn't ran in awhile, maybe it would be liberating.
[this totally isn’t late /silly]
Lilacpoppy frowned, her pale amber eyes narrowing down to slits. “Racing is not one of my…skills,” she commented, trying to word this in the best way possible that didn’t upset the apprentice. “Come on, then.”
—————————
The warrior ducked out through the exit tunnel, leading Marigoldpaw out into the territory. Lilacpoppy’s ears flicked, and she made her way over to the nearest tree, making sure that moss grew at its roots.
“Like this,” She instructed bluntly, unsheathing her claws from one paw. She sank them into the moss, gently scraping until she had freed it from the roots, leaving the dirt that would usually cling to it behind. “If the strip you’re going to collect is damp, don’t collect it. If the strip you’re going to collect has thorns, don’t collect it.” Lilacpoppy wasn’t about to be scolded by Berryshine because the elders’ moss had thorns or was wet. “When you’ve got enough, roll it into a ball. Then collect some more. You’ll tuck one underneath your chin and grab another in your jaws. This way, you don’t have to make multiple trips.”

"This." His fangs sunk snuggly into Claypaw's scruff, lifting her off the ground with little effort. The colossal warrior flung his head to the side, letting go of Claypaw and watching her fly through the air and into the water.
The water was just deep enough to where Claypaw couldn't touch the bottom and would be forced to swim to stay afloat. Duskclaw smiled to himself and sat, waiting to see how Claypaw fairs.
After making sure Winterpaw was set, Talonhive slipped into the river and took a breath before diving under. It doesn't take him long to come up with his first catch, which he deposits on the bank before killing with a bite to the back of its head. The second took longer, and by the time he brings it up it appears like Sunsetgleam and Winterpaw have finished hunting.
"Good job, Winterpaw. Since it seems like we're done, let's head back," he mewed, picking up his two fish before turning to lead the warrior and apprentice back to camp.

Claypaw did her best to stay still as Duskclaw picked her up and tossed her towards the water. A joyous squeal trailed after her. It reminded the apprentice of a game her father played with her, except instead of his waiting paws, there was a body of water. She crashed into the water, and thankfully had enough sense to push her head back up. Water streamed off her as she started kicking rapidly, the once calm stream becoming filled with sharp splashes.
She was doing fine for her first time in water not ankle deep, but at the same time, she wasn't really moving anywhere. Claypaw seemed to be enjoying treading water at least. "So... Do I just... Come back now?"

Duskclaw was fairly surprised by Claypaw's ability to not go under immediately. Still, from all the splashing he could tell she was struggling to some extent. He makes his way in the water, but still keeps his distance so Claypaw can learn herself. "You're splashing. Breathe, Claypaw. Relax. If you fight, you'll get tired and drown. We can't have that, I can barely tolerate Prim's voice as is." His last line has a bit of a joking tone, though it's hard to tell with Duskclaw.

Claypaw held her head up. Her muzzle was occasionally dipping below the water, but thankfully she had been keeping it above more often than not. Right, breathe. Not sneeze; she held one of those back which caused her to make a face. Drowning sounded thoroughly unpleasant, and a terrible way for a Riverclan cat to go out. Slowly, she began to paddle over to Duskclaw. She became more confident as she got closer to her mentor, but it was still clear she was a beginner. "I'd just haunt her to leave you alone. And haunt you, 'cause you'd miss me."

Duskclaw watched Claypaw struggle but stood tall, trusting she can reach him. "Sure I would." The sarcasm in his voice was far more noticeable than his attempts at joking around. "Paddle with a steady pace, Claypaw. You look like a ThunderClan cat trying to swim like that." Now that he was somewhat sure the small cat could not immediately drown, Duskclaw could afford to be a bit harsher and more pushy with lessons.
