Shadowclan. His home and the only place he had ever known. To most of his clan mates, this was also the only thing they'd ever known. Amber's eyes gazed around the clearing as he searched for somebody to kick-start a conversation with perhaps this would be best for the reclusive warrior. Licking his chops he sat up from his rather awkward crouching position and stretched his aching limbs. 'When did I become so...awkward" he mumbled under his breath. With spring already here, he half expected the warm weather to be of welcome rather than the colder days of winter, but alas, he was wrong. Despite his short fur, the longer tufts along his back had already gotten on his nerves. Getting up from his spot, he made his way towards the nursery to play with the kits..
'youre right, maybe you would have lost' rookfire snorted, striking out at sleepysunrise playfully, his paw almost comically large next to sleepysunrise. "you know damn well thats not what i meant"
"kids will be kids eh? those stupid enough ta' try to impress hawkbite with something risky will die n i wont grieve them" perhaps that was a bit far, especially considering one of his current favourite apprentices appeared to be going down that path. no.. she was smarter than that.
"i doubt hawkbite would let em get away with that either" he commented. dawnstar wasnt really the focal point when it came to enforcers, though after his own way through getting both of their approval he may have to reevaluate that though process. it looked like the queen of mean was more involved that he had previously suspected, with hawkbite sending him to dawnstar for approval first. though, he wouldnt be surprised if it was simply because hawkbite didnt like him. whyever that was. rook could not recall doing anything worth a good part of the clan hating him but alas, nothing he could do.
'i dont recall anyone being this braggy in our time' true. it had been different, not that this justified their behaviour but the guards had just merged with the enforcers overall and dawnstar had named two fresh warriors enforcers alongside former guards.. there was less competition in a way, or at least rookfire had not noticed it, too busy trying to find his footing in an unfamiliar territory, surrounded by cats that wouldnt trust him to even die 'correctly'.
he hummed, "me neither. though admittedly i wasnt worrying about any apprentices bragging at the time" and neither was he now. things happened for a reason. while it was annoying, he knew theyd be taken care of. thoroughly humbled. eventually. everything came back some day.
sleepysunrises question sort of caught him off guard, they didnt really have a history of talking about such topics. impresonal questions were safer after all. "decent. mostly busy trying to convince everyone all over that i wont lose my mind and kill everyone" he replied with a bitter chuckle.

"Ooooohhh, Cold."
Sleepysunrise dramatically ooh-ed as she recovered from his playful jab, pushing back against him with a laugh and teasing look. She hadn't thought him to be the type to not care about an apprentice's death, or maybe she did -- Sleepysunrise had never bothered to think about it. Settling down and tucking her paws beneath her, she was having fun listening to the little bird yap on. "The old man's old though, you never know what might enter his mind."
She hummed, amused. She knew very well Hawkbite was still spry as ever and probably wouldn't lose his mind anytime soon (look who's talking), but she couldn't help but poke fun at his advanced age and the stereotype of crazy old lunatics. How funny would it be if their very own commander went down that path? HAH! Entirely ignoring the cats such as her Grandmother, who might as well be twice his age but were still "young" and strong as ever. She just wanted to poke some fun at the old man.
"Hah! I bet you won't."
The topic shifted after her blurted out question, Sleepysunrise moving to rest his chin on her paws; a rare moment where she let most her guard down, a subtle sign she believed Rookfire to be of no threat to her. Or in general, really. He was a good boy, and Sleepysunrise didn't feel as distrustful of him as she did some others, even with all the talk of a prophecy. It hadn't come true yet, now had it? The dead always did have a lot to say, and it wasn't always true. The young medic hummed, cracking an eye open to look out over the clearing and then Rookfire. "How is that going for you? As far as I can tell, that mind of yours is still nice and locked up within that rock we call a skull."
Unlike some people. She tapped her head. She was calling him not-crazy, be happy. "How could anyone possibly loose their mind, anyway."

the medicine cat apprentice remained quiet for a moment, nodding thoughtfully. "the best you can do is take everything life throws at you in stride.. i think youre already well on your way" every cat carried some baggage. in the end, the difference between a bad cat and an exceptional one lay in the way they handle themselves when faced with hardship.
despite his age, bleedingpaw was extraordinarily self reflected and confident despite the bad hand he had been dealt. it was admirable, even to rookfire who would prefer to pretend he was doing well and wasnt unpredictable and rash like a loose cannon..or perhaps a firecracker..
'warriors are supposed to be in control of themselves [..], ive seen far too many act worse than kits'
rookfire chuckled, open and honest, "youre right, youre right.. its harder to get through to them sometimes though. kits tend to be hmm a bit less guarded" what a smart cat.
rook closed the distance between the two as the younger tom bowed his head, touching his nose to his cheek as if signalling there was no need to thank him like that. "thank you for asking great questions, im always here if you need anything" he smiled.
bleedingpaw looked to be leaving, rookfire would linger in place, intending to perhaps catch a bit of rest while he could when he hesitated. at the mention of smokekits death rookfires whisker brows furrowed slightly, not too keen on exploring a topic he couldnt really assist in. from all he knew, poisoning was permanent and irreversible. little did he know it would be be very long before he went out of his way to digest poison himself.. but thats for a different day.
"unless you catch it early and have yarrow near there is little you can do i fear... yarrow makes them throw it back up, if theyre already experiencing signs of the poison i dont think you can do much besides try to make their death easy or hope that it wasnt a lethal dosis." the medic replied, a frown pulling at his features.

In a way Bleedingpaw expected that answer. The light warmth in his pelt from talking to Rookfire dimmed a bit, facing a reality none could really escape. War wounds once done could repair, but once you went underhanded and less direct unless it was caught in the moment there was nothing to be done. It made a horrible sort of sense.
"I suppose thats why all the kits were taught after what plants to never touch. There wasnt much that could be done for us if we actually did anything. Maybe those lessons should be repeated at some point....."
Bleedingpaw considered that, considered running a lesson himself, in honor of his Mama. Though he'd never get around to it in the end, with the revelations coming soon.
"Thats for indulging my final questions Rookfire." dropping the Mr was less a sign of disrespect and more one of genuine like now. "Ill see you around!" and there he went, wobbling away.

she blinks, waiting for a reply, her ear twitches after a moment and then it clicks. "oh-" she steps forward and settles a little ways near the tom "hello!" she meowed as she leaned over and touched her nose to his, that was a hello, a gesture. "you cant hear me can you...?" she sighs, she wanted to hunt, she gets an idea and gets up, running over to the fresh-kill-pile and dropping into a crouch, stalking forward before turning to look at honeycomb. she then padded back over and tilted her head...she felt like she was a master at imitating, she can remember a time when her father couldn't hear anymore after his ears were ripped apart by some savage dog...ugh..that...was sad.

The golden tom looks up this time, only to see the queen trying to communicate with gestures. No use of sign-language, yet he partially seems to understand what Sunnynose is trying to say. First, she contacted her nose to his own, then made her way near the fresh-kill pile while crouching in a hunting position. He’s still not sure if she gestures to him about her recent hunting session, or if she’s about to invite him for it.
Puzzled, he raises his paw and points to himself, wondering if he’s actually involved in it.
..••°°°°••..
she nods "yes yes, I want you" she points to honeycomb "and me" she points to herself "to go hunting!" she drops into the crouch again, ears perked, wondering if he got it- she knew she couldn't go out alone, oh if only the kits didn't have to be so wiggly today-

Eugh! Coldpaw scrunched his face when Sleepyrise ASSAULTED HIM with the plant goop. How could she??? His fur might STAIN NOW... in fact he wasn't sure what was worse, the dye or the bee sting! Stars forbid his looks were imperfect.
It was hard to resist grooming the poultice away instantly, his incessant need to be clean and tidy screaming at him to wipe it off and smooth out his fur. Coldpaw huffed a little in response, too focused on fighting the urge of grooming to have a smarter response. At least this might soothe the bee sting.. and his pain might not be in vain. "Thanks, Medicine Cat."
When Mentor eventually returned, he'd wave his paw at her to beckon her. "Come, Mentor." He'd then slip out - leaving the water she'd brought for him untouched.
But she didn't have time to comment as Coldpaw was already grazing past her out of the medicine cat's den, and she followed in the next breath, hurrying after as she attempted to glimpse what that medicine cat had done to him.
"My poor boy. My poor, injured boy." It came out like a muttered mantra, instinctive babble, her tail flicking behind her in barely-contained unease. "Wouldn't you like your water that Mentor retrieved for you? No? Well, that's alright, I suppose, but you mustn't allow yourself to fall victim to dehydration, especially now in your fragile state. . ."
Old habits took over. Her worried rambles carried on, until he had fully broken away from her, leaving Palequiver in the clearing - a mother with nobody to devote herself to.
rock hunting wasnt what he had expected to do today. rookfire had never been the cat for collecting trinkets, not since the incident anyway, so this would be a first. he did know that kits and apprentices liked to gather shiny rocks and shells. how that was a medicine cat or enforcer duty, he wasnt overly sure. but so be it.
rookfires maw split in a yawn, long limbs carrying him over towards sleepysunrise. he knew the aids hadnt been doing overly well, darkpaw at least, but he had still expected rockjaw to be a bit better at all that. especially given there wasnt that much to do. but after all, it wasnt his place to worry. sleepysunrise was old enough to keep track of her aids.
"heya owlfluff" the younger tom chirped, joining the already waiting cats.
