Re: Lock picks [p]
Crowtooth
Windclan Deputy | He/him | 55 Moons
Power Card: Cold Gust
It was probably a good thing he had Leechscar and Batglare on this trip, Crowtooth hadnt seen or sensed the trap in the slightest. Watching Leechscar unearth the trap Crowtooth took the opportunity to prod at newly revealed shiny vines, harder then stone, that formed the structure. It was cooler then stone however, and had the same odd tang as blood....
The tom felt a shiver of discontent roll down his spine, hackles involuntarily raising as he looked.
"Well its somethin' twoleg an' dont look at all like the snappy ones Ive heard described so Id say ya found it. Its.... Bigger then I thought." Big enough to fit not just a cat but a fox even and until uncovered it didnt smell all that odd, now though? Now Crowtooth was certain he'd never forget the oddly non invasive but disquieting smell.
"Its takin' yer weight no issue Leechscar." Impressive given Leechscar had to be one of the largest cats in windclan, larger (or at least taller if his equal in bulk) then Crowtooth. "We might 'ave some issue destroyin' it....."
Peering into the open entrance the tom sniffed, rasping quietly to himself "Hidden an' smellin' like prey no wonder cats wander in an' are taken..." Head cocking before he more loudly asked "This extra wall must shut somehow to catch us, but what tells the trap someones inside? An' how do the twolegs know when its closed, we know it aint long after a cat gets caught they show up by reports but they cant be like, watchin' all o' 'em always, theres none in sight or scent."
Sitting back with a huff as he poked the hard, undamagable walls the tom internally came to the conclusion that even Leechscar using all his strength and taking a rock to this thing wouldnt dent it and it was too big to drag to a cliff. His ability might be the only shot here, which boded ill given he was the only one who had it and was very much outnumbered by too many traps to manage.
"If we can figure out how ta shut it wit'out gettin' someone trapped inside we can hide an' watch the twolegs come, git a sense o' how they use it an' how long it takes. Maybe git a clue on destruction but Im stumped."
Maybe a paw could fit through the bars from the outside a bit to poke at the weird bumpy bits inside? Maybe a stick?
Crowtooth was getting some tools and, after some digging in the area and around the trap he'd rapidly built a little pile of sticks, roots, rocks, and even this weird part of the trap that'd been staked into the ground. If Batglare and Leechscar wanted to use the stuff to do their own poking the deputy had faith they were smart enough and independent enough to do so.

Re: Lock picks [p]
| Dapplebreeze |
77 Moons - WindClan Fury Lieutenant
Agatha Kitty - Active | Silver Tongue - Active | Killer Aptitude [Tier 3] - Inactive
Between Lightningstorm's uncharacteristic seriousness and Hawkfur's far too eager volunteering to be caught in a trap that had already hurt so many of their clanmates, Dapplebreeze was just about ready to need a deep breath to compose herself. Perhaps not the most volatile or dramatic of reactions, but a reaction from her all the same... which was more than she tended to offer. Gratefully, Twilightstar's good mood evened out the youngster's stress, and the fury eagerly departed after her, offering only a last, parting glance at Batglare before focusing on the task at paw. She had no doubt the three would succeed in their mission, but there was always that concern. That fickle, errant thought of But what if...?
Marching behind her companions, the fury kept her attention to a different location than both of them. She trusted they would be on their highest alert, and with all three of them focusing mostly on different sectors as opposed to trying to see it all, she had to assume that they would have more success... and less of a chance for Hawkfur to sacrifice himself. Eyes well used to the plateau scanned the horizon, on the lookout for anything that might be different. Out of sorts. That like the twolegs themselves, simply did not belong here.
Mismatched ears perked up as the red fury chirped, dark blue hues following his line of sight only to instantly spot what he had seen. With curiosity, she padded behind him, apprehensive of getting too close without further inspection. The device certainly looked menacing, and she would understand quite clearly why Lightningstorm had been looking as if sleep had been avoiding her since the twolegs had started planting these around their territory. And injury from one of these would be... unpleasant in the plainest terms possible.
"Aye, my dear. It would appear to be the case. This is the one that has taken a couple of apprentices down already, hasn't it? Their legs, particularly? So it's safe to say that it reacts to being stepped on. Or at the very least being approached in some way. I cannot fathom how the twolegs are alerted to our presence once it traps one of ours, however. To my knowledge no one has mentioned anything about a call being made by this... thing to summon the villains," Dapplebreeze mewed in a contemplative tone of voice, gaze appraising what could be seen of the horrid trap with a meticulous eye.

Re: Lock picks [p]
Perhaps scouting for traps with a single eye wasn't the best task for a half blind she-cat. Twilightstar kept her head tilted downward, eyes on the ground, as she wandered a bit away from Hawkfur and Dapplebreeze to search for anything out of place. It was a little difficult to notice if she was missing anything, as she constantly turned her head to see where she couldn't. Usually her ears and nose made up for where she couldn't see, but as they weren't hunting for something alive and she wasn't familar with the scent...
A noise from Hawkfur made the leader pause midstep and turn toward the russet tom. She trailed a little slower behind Dapplebreeze to where the fury was standing. Twilightstar's ears slid sideways as she stared at the trap. She understood why it was called jaws, it looked like a set of fangs. Her ears jerked up and angled toward Dapplebreeze as she spoke. She raised a good question. She leaned in a little bit closer, breathing in the scent, if any, it carried. It smelled distinctively of blood, but way stronger mixed with something she couldn't distinguish.
"Dawnstar never said anything about twolegs being summoned to her territory after triggering the trap. Perhaps these ones are special." Twilightstar mused, eye locking onto the strange chain on the ground. She wanted to inspect it closer, but wasn't going to risk anyone's legs over it.
"Well, speculating isn't going to help us here. Shall we try setting it off, Dawnstar said, a stick in the middle of it was enough to make it close shut, although maybe a stone will work." The she-cat glanced around in search of something to at the trap.
"We can hide and wait for the twolegs to show up, if they do. They're opening the jaws after they close. Perhaps hiding and observing them will give us some clues." She thought aloud.
[Whoever can set off the trap in their next post, if you wanna bring in the twoleg, go ahead, we just need a twoleg to briefly rest the trap and point out the tracker attached to the trap, otherwise I'll do it in my next post]

Batglare silently trailed after Crowtooth and Leechscar as the big gray tom inspected the trap by leaping on it. That wouldn't be the commander's first choice, but whatever. He angled his ears towards Crowtooth while keeping a close eye on Leechscar. He was as impressed as Crowtooth that the trap never collapsed underneath Leechscar's weight. It was very sturdy and very large; the thing looked like it could fit several cats inside.
While Crowtooth inspected the trap, Batglare observed but made no move to get closer, as he kept an ear out for twolegs. They were normally quite noisy creatures, and so big they were impossible to miss, but Batglare didn't want to take any chances.
The tom offered no words or answers to Crowtooth's questions as he had no and saw no reason to fill the tension with empty words. He agreed with his plan with a deep nod of his head. It seemed like learning was all they could do here as of now. As Crowtooth began gathering random tools, Batglare called Leechscar down with a jerk of his head and got closer to the trap. He circled it much like the deputy had, hunting for anything that stood out to him. He lightly brushed his flank along the cool metal, ignoring the chill of discomfort it caused him, and paused near the back of the trap.
The entire trap looked made of silver vines, but the front wall was solid, and there was a part near the middle that looked like solid stone or something. Intrigued, the older tom padded back to the front of the trap and grabbed one of the sticks Crowtooth had brought. He poked at the solid wall hanging at the top of the trap with a twig of a stick, unaware that it snapped after a few good pokes. He tossed the broken limb stuck in his maw, grabbed a new, thicker stick, and padded to the side of the trap, attempting to poke the stick in through the hole to poke at the slab. He found the stick just a little too thick, as it got stuck in the vine, and trying to yank it out caused it to crack.
Oops. He held half of the stick in his mouth, and as the other half fell on the metal slab, Batglare leaped backwards in the air, fur fluffed up and ears pinned against his head as the trap door snapped shut with a loud noise. Oh, found the trigger.
