Rae nodded, waving her tail in acknowledgment. "Yeaaaa that's the thing with borders. They're not always safe." She mewed, turning her to head to look across the border. "Sedgewater Valley is our border with WindClan. I don't usually see a ton of aggression from Twilightstar and her rabbits at the Gatherings, but ya never know. So always keep your senses sharp at the borders." She warned her cousin, her gaze growing serious before she purring affectionately and flicked Spiderpaw's ear with the tip of her fluffy tail. She wasn't trying to terrify Spiderpaw after all, she just wanted her to exercise caution.

Ravenglow noticed Stagheart's work and nodded in his direction. "See what he's doin'?" She asked before looking at Spiderpaw. "That's how we mark the borders while we're here." With that said, Ravenglow set to marking nearby bushes along their side of border, making sure RiverClan's scent was strong and consistent. "Make sure to check for gaps in the scentline." She meowed, looking over her shoulder at the gray tabby. Rae looked back when she felt that area was good, flicking her tail to a spot near Spiderpaw. "Give it a try!" She purred, blinking encouragingly to her younger cousin.

That was... a fair point. While Spiderpaw didn't attend the last gathering and had no clue what the other clans' temperaments were, she bristled a bit at the idea of encountering a Windclan patrol. She couldn't help but to wonder if the other clan would, in fact, have a group go out around the same time as they were out. She wished she knew what Riverclan and Windclan's current standing was, but she honestly hadn't heard much at all about them. Maybe she should have gone to that gathering...

As she was sniffing the air, immediately taking in the strong scent of the border, Ravenglow's tail flicked her shoulder and made her jump slightly. Spiderpaw trilled appreciatively at the touch, even if it had startled her for a moment. Then she paused for a moment. "How often do our patrols overlap with the other clans?" She asked her older cousin, head tilting slightly with the question. "They don't usually... end in skirmishes, do they?" She added to the question. She knew she could handle herself for a bit in a fight, especially against another apprentice, but she may not fair so well against a warrior, even if they were oversized rabbits.

As Ravenglow directed her attention towards Stagheart, the apprentice took in how he marked, then how her cousin marked the border. Her sensitive nose was able to easily detect any gaps in the border's scentline, so she followed the warriors' examples and refreshed anywhere that they missed. She wasn't much a fan of the Windclan markers she had to be so close to. They made her nose crinkle in distaste. "Why do the other clans smell so bad?" She asked, remembering the scent of the thunderclan border from when Hollylynx had brought her over to it. She was now only missing one clan from her mental index.

Stagheart idly listened to the distant sound of Ravenglow and Spiderpaw's voices, silently approving of the young warrior's words. She seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, like her sister (as far as he'd heard from Berryshine, anyway; she was really fond of Rainwish). He took his time to scan for anything suspicious, but thankfully, it was quiet.

The large tabby returned to the patrol right as Spiderpaw asked that last question. He let out a rusty chuckle, flicking his striped tail in acknowledgement. "Others would say we're the ones who smell the worst... like fish 'n minnows," he grunted, recalling the words he'd heard spat and grumbled at Gatherings. Whiskers twitched in amusement. "Don't go 'round sayin' that out loud, lest you want 'em to claw yer ears." Despite his usual gruffness, he had a humorous edge to his tone at the moment.

Rae could tell Spiderpaw was concerned, and flicked her cousin's ear with her tail-tip gently. "It's never happened to me, but I'm sure it happens from time to time." She responded, giving Spiderpaw a confident grin she hoped would boost her confidence and comfort. "One must always be alert at the borders. Generally though, two passing patrols will do what they came here for and move along. If it does ever happen to a patrol you're on, pay attention to your patrol leader's cues and follow their lead. Keep the chatter to a minimum, and you should be fine." She mewed, touching her nose to the younger cat's ear. Typically, most sane patrols wouldn't be out looking for a fight. But she didn't want Spiderpaw to drop her guard completely.

She opened her mouth to answer Spiderpaw's next question, but Stagheart beat her to it. Ravenglow let out a grunt of agreement, looking back at the -paw. "Every clan smells bad to each other. But I think we all agree ShadowClan's is the most...potent." She meowed with a chuckle. "You'll get a nose full of them at Gatherings. I'll tell ya, I was relieved to come home after my first Gathering." She let out a breath dramatically and tossing her head back to add some spice for dramatic effect. "Now then! Let's get this border marked and checked out and get back." She chirped, gently nudging Spiderpaw's flank with a headbutt.

Ravenglow didn't want to stress the young cat out, but she would prefer to keep a border patrol thorough and efficient. The less time they spent out here, the less chances for any kind of skirmishes. And that made her happiest.

It was a relief to know that skirmishes were not too frequent of an occurrence. Ravenglow's consistent, comforting touches helped the apprentice relax, though Spiderpaw heeded the warning and perked her ears to listen as she went about trying to help with marking the border alongside her cousin. "I think I understand." She mewed, lightly nuzzling Ravenglow's shoulder, appreciating the older cat's instruction.

Spiderpaw jumped when Stagheart spoke up. Her ears pinned back for a moment at the thought of another clan patrol hearing her comment and it causing a skirmish. That would be terrible! She was about to apologize when Ravenglow spoke up, making her smile at the warrior's comments. It made her feel a little bit better to watch her cousin's dramatic antics, even making her giggle a bit as her ears perked back up. Ravenglow seemed to know exactly what to do to soothe her fears.

With a headbutt to Spiderpaw's flank, it was announced that they needed to finish up. "Okay!" She trilled, getting back to work, specifically seeking any gaps in the scentline.
