He tried to hide his panic like just pretending he knew what he was talking about...
genius-.
He cleared his throat and straightened his ears

"Y-yea, Hearing.. Hearing and scent-.
they all have different scents-...
and uhh different catching techniques..."

He was being absolute idiot and he new it..
but whatever means it meant keeping his pride-
hopefully he was... somewhat right?

Talk about digging your own grave. Flintclaw's eyes narrowed more and more as Dizzypaw continued to spew information that did not answer his question. He let the brat spiral for a moment, tail tip twitching back and forth while he waited for him to be done with his tangent. What was he even trying to say?

How disappointing.

Finally, with a flick of his tail, Flintclaw stopped the apprentice from continuing to embarrass himself. "Rabbits." The tabby growled, answering the question he had posed. "The dominant sense for a rabbit is hearin'." He closed his eyes for a moment, face mostly calm but his ear twitched with irritation. He would have to break this down to the simplest of lessons, it seemed. He didn't want to listen to the red tom continue stumbling over answers.

"Squirrels rely on their sense of smell. Birds rely mostly on sight." Flintclaw didn't see a point in asking the apprentice to answer the questions about which one had what. Maybe he would ask at the end of the lesson to see if the apprentice had paid attention.

"Show me your huntin' crouch," He ordered, "And tell me how you would go about huntin' each of those prey separately based on their dominant senses." Why not get a glimpse at the apprentice's reasoning skills? He had the base answers... but, at this rate, Flintclaw didn't hold much hope on his apprentice coming up with good answers.

He cringed slightly at his mentors expression.
yea, he should've expected that...

"O-oh you meant... right-"

He mumbled and snapped out of it when he heard the command
and then tried to copy a crouch that he had seen another warrior do,
while also thinking of the answers to that question...

"Well... for rabbits you would have take really slow and cautious steps so they wouldn't hear you.
Squirls- uhm. wouldn't you have to mask your scent somehow..?
And you have to hide and crouch down pretty low so birds don't see you-"

At least this he had a bit more of a solid answer for-.

Well, it was about time. The brat was finally starting to get somewhere. His answers were... mostly satisfactory. His crouch could use some work. The warrior watched the apprentice for a moment, taking in the crouch. It wasn't the worst he had ever seen. At least Dizzypaw put some effort into this, unlike the simple task of asking someone a question about prey.

The large warrior slipped into his own hunters crouch, giving the red tabby an example as he stalked forward.

"Mostly correct." He said simply. "What is the most common way to mask your scent?" He asked his apprentice. Sure, there were many ways for a cat to mask their scent, but rolling around in foul smelling plants and substances was not ideal for every day. He really didn't want to have to explain wind directions to Dizzypaw. That was a job that queens and elders should have done when the kit was in the nursery.

He tried to think of some time when he had-.

A short sigh. That was the only hint of disapproval the tabby showed, but he wasn't sure if he was disappointed with the apprentice, or the queen that raised him. It seemed that the simplest of basics had been neglected, and there was no way of telling if it was the brat's lack of attention to his elders or neglect in teaching of the young in general. It didn't matter. At least he wasn't whipping together incoherent answers that had nothing to do with the question posed like earlier.

Flintclaw sniffed. "Alright. Let's not beat around the bush, then." He growled and dug his claws into the grass, ripping out the light stalks. He raised his pawful of weeds and shook it free. The light breeze didn't do much, but it did glow the grass just slightly to his left. "Scent is like anything else in the wind. You're scent will always follow it until it settles to the ground, until you're so close to the prey that it is too late." He explained, looking back to the red tabby. "So, the easiest way to temporarily mask your scent is to simply stay down wind of your prey."

"Does that make sense?" His tone was a bit cold, but he managed to keep the condescending edge out of it. That last thing he needed was Dizzypaw being too closed off to ask questions... though, he did hope to make the apprentice uncomfortable enough to force him to think through his own solutions and actually coming up with no answers before asking.

His ear flicked and he slightly relaxed.
Sitting up to listen to the tom talk.

"that.. makes since.. yea."

He nodded sheepishly.
A slight annoyed expression on his face.
Annoyed he didn't just think of that-.

Flintclaw nodded and turned away from the apprentice to sniff the air. He could smell plenty of prey in the newleaf air. He could hear the birds singing and flying about. He knew the apprentice should be able to figure out the rest. Most of it just needed experience.

"Good," He said, massive head turning back to Dizzypaw. "If it all makes sense, then go catch somethin'. Doesn't matter what." This should be a good test to see if the apprentice had paid attention to anything that Flintclaw had said. If he failed... well, then he would need remedial training.

"We won't be returning to camp until you have caught somethin'."

He was slightly taken back.
That was it?
Just start hunting?!
Shouldn't he be taught more-?

He was about to protest but he closed his mouth and sighed.
Sniffing the air for whatever he could find was nearest.
Then started padding in a random direction towards the scent of prey.

He had a feeling it would be a long day...

Flintclaw narrowed his eyes as he saw the complaint rise on his apprentice's face. However, the brat seemed to think better of it and turned away and wandered in a random direction. Well, would you look at that? He was learning. The warrior briefly remembered Dizzypaw making the same face once before during the territory tour.

Flintclaw waited for the apprentice to disappear before slipping into the woods as well, staying silent and down wind of Dizzypaw to avoid detection. He wanted to see how the apprentice would handle himself without being aware of any direct supervision.

He already seemed off on an odd paw, as Flintclaw couldn't detect any kind of intent behind where the red tom was heading. Yes, if he were to guess, Dizzypaw was just winging it. Good, that was the best way for him to learn his own lessons without the warrior's intervention.
