Alright. He’d gotten some one-on-one time with Emberpaw, he didn’t know what had become of Slypaw, so now it was time for some one-on-one time with Chasmpaw. Since clearly the joint tour left…much to be desired. The brown tabby approached the apprentice’s den with a confident stride, he already had a plan in mind. “Hey! Chasmpaw!” He called into the den, stepping aside to allow room for them to emerge. “Rise ‘n shine!” He called, his tail waving excitedly. Today they’d go over battle basics. He knew Chasmpaw was older, and ideally he wanted her ready for her warrior ceremony as leaf-bare turned over to newleaf.

Chasmpaw was already awake when Acornfall called her. She was standing in her nest until it was time to go, which was now. "Hello Acornfall! What are we going to do this early morning?" She meowed as she walked towards him.

The sun was about to peek at them, it was going to be sunrise soon. Although it was late leafbare, it was still reasonably cold. Chasmpaw didn't mind the cold.

Acornfall purred in approval as Chasmpaw emerged right away. He guessed she was awake and ready. "Today we're going to get in some combat practice. The early cat gets the mouse as it were! So we're going to get there before any other cat is using the training grounds." Plus it would be a nice way to deal with the cold. I hope Bri is doing good... But as long as she stayed in her nest, she should be fine. Acornfall turned, flicking his tail for Chasmpaw to follow as he did so. "Let's go then!" He chirped.

Acornfall led the way to the training grounds, setting a brisk pace to get the blood pumping. "Now then, how do you prefer we do this?" He asked, turning to face his apprentice. "Would ya rather me show ya some moves first? Or just try me and see where your paws take ya?" He offered this to her rather than just deciding what to do. Everycat learned differently after all!

Chasmpaw was looking forward to her combat practice with Acornfall. She was excited to learn new things. She nodded as she looked at him.

Thanks to her mentor's brisk pace, she was not as cold as before. However, her breathing was slightly faster than normal, as expected. Chasmpaw listened to Acornfall and thought for a minute before meowing, "I would like it if you show me some moves first. That way, I could..." She paused for a moment. "I forgot what I was going to say next...Please show me, Acornfall!" Chasmpaw mewed with slight excitement.

Acornfall chuckled and nodded. "Alrighty then! First things first!" He repositioned himself so that Chasmpaw could watch safely from the side. "Frontal paw strikes." The broad-shouldered tabby lifted his paw upwards, bringing it down and slamming it on the ground in front of him as through squashing a target. "This move is the most basic. It can be done with or without claws in combat. Claws can cause physical damage for obvious reasons, but even without claws, a sheathed paw with enough force brought down an opponent's head can stun them. Which can be the difference between life and death." As he explained this, he brought his paw down repeatedly. Showcasing the action both with claws sheathed, and without.

The brown tabby turned to Chasmpaw with an inviting, wide smile. "You try it now. Look at the spac in front of you, and try to imagine that you're facing an enemy. Raise your paw up, then bring it down with as much force as you can!"

Chasmpaw watched from the side, taking mental notes. She thought as he was explaining, "Frontal paw strike is like stepping...If I push/strike down with enough force, I will stun my enemy!"

The young apprentice looked at the space in front of her and imagined that there was an enemy, standing there. She quickly thought to herself that she could strike/step on her enemy's paws.

Chasmpaw lifted her right paw upwards and brought her paw down with so much force that it caused a loud thump. "Did you hear a loud thump? It sounded like it came from nearby." She meowed.

Acornfall smiled and nodded with approval. "Yes! That's because it was caused by the strength you put into that blow." He mewed with pride. "Do you feel comfortable with that? Or did you want to practice more before we move on to the next move?" He asked, wanting to ensure that Chasmpaw got a good feel for it. One good swing didn't necessarily mean that she got the hang of it, but she could also just have a natural talent for combat.

Chasmpaw said as she looked at Acornfall, "Can we practice this move a few more times, please?" She once again lifted her left front paw up and smacked the ground with it. This time, it was not as strong.

(I read your VM and thank you for your concern and suggestions. What detail(s) should I change Chasmpaw's preferred training style? Looking at your VM, I feel like I should add something that says Acornfall does not neglect Chasm's training.

Besides that, we really should get this thread done by the 20th of April. Is this thread only going to focus on basic fighting moves?)

Acornfall nodded and smiled encouragingly. “Sure! Why don’t you try it on me?” He mewed, standing in front of Chasmpaw in a combat-ready crouch. “When you’re ready! Come at me with it like you would an enemy. No claws!” He added the last bit hastily, can’t forget that rule! This is for learning after all, they’re not supposed to be actually injured.

@Bob the Venomous Bird - Chasmpaw - I think we could definitely get this wrapped by the 20th! I usually have 1 training thread running at a time per apprentice, but to expedite things we could start another if you wanted? I assumed this one would encompass basic fighting and end with a little spar. Did you want more advanced battle training for Chasm?

I think with your finder it was more the tone, just made it sound like she didn’t have training from Acorn because he was neglecting her training.

Chasmpaw nodded with a small smile before taking several small steps towards Acornfall. Once she was close enough, she lifted her front right paw slowly to above Acornfall's head and whacked it/him with restraint. Her claws were sheathed so no damage would be done.

I updated the '[All] Bob's Apprentices Training Finder'. It does not contain the 'teaching neglection' now.

Is it the responsibility for the apprentice's roleplayer to seek out training? I think I have to take the initiative more than you do since I have an apprentice. Having an apprentice is hard...

 

Let's just have one thread for them now. I'm okay with the spar at the end!
