Riftpaw let out a small sigh of relief as it was clear that Duskleaf was just bringing Irisdream over to help. No scolding would be had from Sunheart today. "Yes." He replied to the she-cat with a nod, casting Duskleaf a questioning look.

Duskleaf smiled in gratitude at Irisdream. "Thank ye, means a lot." Though he wasn’t sure whether he was referring to the help, or Irisdream herself meaning a lot to him. It really wasn’t hard to see they’d become very close, but Duskleaf couldn’t say anything, not yet at least. He would be quite embarrassed to try and tell Irisdream how he felt, for now it would have to wait.

He noticed Riftpaw’s questioning glance and realised he hadn’t told him and Beaverpaw about his uh…condition. "I can’t smell." He quickly explained. "My nose was pretty badly damaged in the battle with the other three clans and now it doesn’t work right."

Irisdream felt her ears grow warm at Duskleaf's words, but she tried hard not to read too much into it. The silvery she-cat turned her attention back to the young ones before her, nodding as each one provided their answer. She glanced at Duskleaf, touching her nose to his. "You are no less a warrior for it." She murmured with a soft smile, hoping to remind him that he had strengths outside of what his injured nose limited. Irisdream looked back to the apprentices with her "mentor face" on again, though a gentle smile graced her face again it was clearly different from the one she shared with Duskleaf. "Good. Then you already have an idea of what scent you are looking for." She mewed to the two young toms.

"Prey-scent, when alive, has a warmth to it that may be lacking from the prey you've scented in the prey-pile. But the basis of the scent is the same. Truly, your mind should recognize the scent instinctively if it is something you have scented before." She flicked her tail thoughtfully, waiting a moment to ensure the two grasped the concept of what she was doing. "Now, when your nose is not catching something, it helps to face the wind and taste the air." Irisdream demonstrated by tilting her head upwards, using her whiskers to located the direction of the breeze, turning to face it, and opening her jaws to draw air into her mouth. Tasting the breeze for traces of prey.

Sure enough, lots of traces of leaf-bare flooded her senses. But also traces of leaf-bare prey. Irisdream angled her ears in the direction of a scent. "Mouse." She stated. "Sometimes, prey like mice and rabbits come out of their burrows in leaf-bare in search of food." She explained, turning to search the snow, following the scent until she found what she was looking for. "You can also use your eyes to find tracks." She pointed out, stepping back to allow the apprentices to take a look at the tracks. "Now, you try." She mewed, a small and encouraging smile on her maw as she glanced from Beaverpaw to Riftpaw.

Oh.
So Duskleaf can't smell.
That explains the help, at least.

Beaverpaw listened carefully to Irisdream's words.
It makes sense.

Oh, now it's their turn to try.
Hopefully he'll actually smell something this time.
