The air was crisp and clean as the moon gave way to the sun, and gray touched the pitch night sky. Jasminepaw gave a small, delicate yawn as she gracefully stretched her legs and back. She had decided to sleep outside her nest last night, preferring the canopy of stars overhead. She wasn’t crazy of course, she slept under cover so as to not get covered in snow. She blinked up at the sky before turning to groom her fur. Meticulously removing any scraps of snow, dirt, or other intruders until she was satisfied.

Hawkpaw snuck up behind Jasminepaw, his fur bristling with mischief. At the last second, he pounced, attempting to land his paws lightly on her shouldeers.

Jasminepaw was completely engrossed in what she was doing. Totally unsuspecting, she didn’t notice Hawkpsw behind her until it was too late. A flash of yellow fur and then she felt his weight on top of her, a squeal of surprise escaping her before she could muffle it. Face down in the frosted grass, for a moment the shock paralyzed her body. But then the familiar scent of her denmate let her know this wasn’t some surprise attack. The smaller she-cat struggled under Hawkpaw’s weight. “What is the meaning of this! Step off!” She demanded, feeling hot all of a sudden despite the cold. Hot with embarrassment.

Hawkpaw giggled, his laugh catching in his throat so he wheezed. Sorry! He shrugged, batting her playfully over the ear as he rolled off of her. He grinned, perking his ears as she gave him a look.

Jasminepaw did not hide her glare as she sat up again, shaking out her fur. “Oh, I highly doubt that.” She grumbled in response to his apology, craning her neck to groom her fur down until it was smooth again. “Honestly, Hawkpaw! What were you trying to accomplish?” There was a light tone of scolding in her voice, but despite her tone and the tint of annoyance in her eyes, there was also the tiniest hint of amusement. She swiped lightly at his ear in a playful manner, claws sheathed of course she wasn’t a beast.

ZZzzT! Hawkpaw grinned, making the noise with his tongue between his teeth. You're not my mother! He teased, tilting back his head with a chortle of laughter. Anyways, whatcha doin' alone in the cold? He stared intently at the younger apprentice, his ear twitching as he did so.

Jasminepaw crinkled her nose at the sound that came from her denmate, though she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Very nice….” She muttered sarcastically. “Is that your bird call you’re working on?” She mewed with a soft giggle, teasing him lightly heartedly. She tilted her head at his question. What was she doing? Oh, that’s right.

“I slept out here last night.” She explained, stretching her front legs in a deep bowed stretch. “I was grooming my fur before a certain furball interrupted.” She mewed pointedly, cocking an eyebrow though her eyes glittered with amusement. She didn’t know she expected from her life as an apprentice, but she certainly wasn’t prepared for such a lively denmate. One Slypaw was enough thank you! Though, she knew enough to know that Hawkpaw was harmless. Mischievous little puff…but harmless.

Hawkpaw frowned. You can't sleep out in this cold! You'll freeze off every hair on your pelt! He exclaimed, his eyes widening. He had only just started speaking with Jasminepaw, but suddenly he seemed as if he needed to protect her. He was her denmate, and he couldn't let her get sick! If one cat got sick, the whole clan might be next! He quickly turned his pout into a smile. And who's that certain furball? He mewed, raising an eyebrow. Yes, if you know, you know.

Jasminepaw blinked in surprise when Hawkpaw scolded her for sleeping outside. Sure it was probably…somewhat hare-brained. But for a cat who just protested that she wasn’t his mother, this logic was fascinating. She narrowed her eyes in a challenge, mischief of her own in their amber depths. “Ahem. Now then, who isn’t whose mother?” She retorted, lashing the tip of her tail across Hawkpaw’s nose. “Besides, I just…like to see the stars at night.” She mewed wistfully, blinking up at the sky, now gaining brighter colors. “Silverpelt is so much clearer when the weather is cold.”

She turned her gaze back to her denmate with a raised eyebrow of her own. “Ah. Yes. Who indeed.” She mewed back, jabbing him gently in the side with one of her brown-toed paws. “Honestly, one of these days you’re going to sneak up on me like that and not like what happens.” She challenged with a huff, once more swiping her tail across his face. They didn’t have too much of an age difference between them, but apparently that was enough to give him an edge. For now. But on her family’s name, Jasminepaw vowed she’d catch up quickly. And one of these days, she’d surprise him right back!

Hawkpaw grinned sheepishly, shrugging her off. As her tail flew over his nose, he sneezed, giggling. I'd like to see ya try! He shot back with a smile. He booped his freezing cold nose to her fur, attempting to make her shiver.
