The day was calm until Caveclaw heard an apprentice yelling for other cats from the den.
Hm.
Doesn't sound good:
Caveclaw heads over poking her head inside.
She was about to ask what was wrong, but she spotted it rather quickly.
One of the apprentice's, Duskpaw, was dead.
No injuries or nothing.
Just... dead.
Caveclaw made their way inside, glancing at Squirrelpaw.
She sniffed the body for any signs of sick.
Nothing she could find, but she's also not an expert.
Duskpaw just smelt dead.
She then looked up at Squirrelpaw. "Did you or anyone notice signs of anything wrong the night before?" She asked as she started to lift Duskpaw's body so she could be moved out of the den.
The mackerel calico shook her head, shifting on her white-tipped paws. ''No. I didn't, at least. If anyone else did, they didn't mention anything,'' Squirrelpaw looked at the Lionheart, her eyes wide.

You know what Sunsetgleam didn’t expect to happen today?
Their first ever apprentice
Dead.
They had just been near the warrior’s den. They had just been contemplating on taking Duskpaw out for training today. They had just been thinking about what’d be best to teach today. They had just been thinking about it. Just now. When the another apprentice called out their name. They could sense a feeling of panic in her voice. When Sunsetgleam had arrived in front of the apprentice’s den. They haven’t even seen it yet. But they heard. Duskpaw was dead.
This was just a nightmare right? They’ve had plenty of those! They’ll wake up soon, in the morning. And then.. And then after waking they’ll go to the apprentice’s den and see Duskpaw! And then they could get to training! Yeah! This was all just a bad dream.
That’s what Sunsetgleam wanted to believe. But it’s all just fake belief, isn’t it?
What a shame. Maybe if Stormstar didn’t give Duskpaw to you she wouldn’t have been cursed with an early death. You must be unlucky or something. Before you know it, that grey furred apprentice’s up next!
Sunsetgleam knew they had nothing to do with it. Yhey knew that was wrong. But they can’t- this was their first apprentice and they..they failed at making Duskpaw into a warrior. They didn’t succeed in the job they were given. They apprentice they had been given.
They walked over to Duskpaw’s lifeless body, unknowing of what to say but knowing..she’s not coming back. “Duskpaw..” how. How did she die? Did Starclan themselves strike her down or something?? There was injuries no signs of sickness. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But here she was, cold and lifeless right in front of their eyes. She was training so well and growing and..then she died. She didn’t get a warrior name yet! They knew life was unfair but why does it have to be the first apprentice they were trusted with?!
[just wanted to get a quick Sunset reaction post out before things start moving lol]
"Well, you look crazy. And when you start laughing like that, you sound pretty crazy, too." But it's fascinating, or perhaps just slightly more novel than most other things have been lately, so Salamanderpaw rises up from her freshly made nest so that she can waddle over and plonk down at the edge of Stonepaw's.
"Least it's not crying." She's a brightly-patterned loaf there for a long moment after saying so and not much else. Salamanderpaw is peering skeptically at Stonepaw before finally: "What's even so funny? Is this how we all find out you're silly, 'cause I didn't see that one coming." She's got a paw moving out slowly, guided by the intent to nudge Stonepaw's head to a position that's not as odd. De-sillyfication. "Or is this some crazy new way for a cat to die? Come quick, she's got the giggles and the droops, it's got to be greycough. You might get lucky though. Looks like the kind of thing you can sleep off." She only says that because goodness knows, Stonepaw looks like she's got plenty of things she could stand to sleep off. Maybe it'd just been to loud or busy before?
stonepaw, she/her, 9 moons
riverclan apprentice
a pale gray she-cat with dull blue eyes.

Huh. Was she laughing weirdly? Stonepaw supposed she didn't usually laugh at all, actually.
Stonepaw was surprised when Salamanderpaw suddenly sat down right next to her, blinking her eyes wide. Of course that was what managed to snap her out of it for a second- she wasn't used to anyone being so close to her. Especially not a cat her age. Usually it was just Brokenstream trying to stop her from drowning, or Adderstrike hiding her under a bush. Both awkward moments, but they were for a reason. So what was Salamanderpaw doing?
"...I don't cry," she mumbled under her breath, feeling the need to correct that bit. Did she? Stonepaw didn't think she did. She hadn't been sad enough to cry in a long time. When she was a kit, she did. She was sad a lot then.
Stonepaw ignored the actual questions Salamanderpaw asked, for the most part. It was a lot of words and Stonepaw wasn't great at wording right now. Or ever. But she did pliantly move her head when Salamanderpaw nudged her, now facing the right side up and looking more sensible. De-sillyfied.
Huh? Shut up? Why would Stonepaw want her to do that? "No," she huffed, sounding firm. "I like you talking. You have... a nice voice."
It was true, in Stonepaw's opinion. She did. Salamanderpaw always sounded so confident, never trailing off or stuttering like Stonepaw did. She wanted to hear what Salamanderpaw had to say... yawn.
(i for realsies thought i replied to this already lol)

Morning already? They blinked, gazing out the den exit. Yep, there it was. A little bit of sunlight flitting through. The apprentice let out a sigh, flopping his head onto his paws. He didn't wanna get up yet. He didn't want to stay in here all day either, but... It just felt so early. And their den was so much cosier than the cold clearing.

Midnightpaw sat up in his nest, a weird dream waking him. The jet-black tom shook out his pelt and looked around. He stood up, taking a few slow pawsteps out towards the clearning. It was a nice morning, seeming cool and breezy. Midnight was about to get out when he tripped on what felt like a tail. "Oof! Sorry!" He mewed sheepishly, looking back at Seapaw. "Y'alright?"
