Goldenpaw yawned tiredly, as he had been doing missions and tasks for his mentor 24/7. He wandered about the clearing, wondering what he was supposed to do. Did he want me to get him some water or did he want me to clean out his nest? Goldenpaw asked himself, prying his memory for which one he was supposed to do. Or did he want me to clean the elders’ nests? Or the nursery? Goldenpaw thought, confused.

(I’d think hunting would work fine for him!)

“Goldenpaw!! Over here,” Fawnheart called from where she was munching on a finch in a shaded corner of the cleaning. ”The fresh kill pile is getting very low, if you are not busy let’s go out hunting,” she purred cheerfully, “I’ll teach you how to catch a fish!”. She finished her finch and trotted over giving the apprentice a lick on the ear, “I know your mentor has been working your paws to the bone.”

Goldenpaw blinked at Fawnheart. “U-uh.. thanks.” Goldenpaw replied quietly and awkwardly, considering his social skills were rather low. “I can do it, I’m confident.” Goldenpaw added, not wanting to show any signs of weakness in front of Fawnheart.

”Come on silly, I’m not thhhhattttt scary,”she purred and playfully bumped her head against his, “I know I’m a she-cat but there is no need to be all nervous.”

She trotted towards the camps exit and on towards the river, flicking her tail across Goldenpaws cheek to tell him to follow. ”Hope you can swim,” she pureed then took off hoping the young apprentice could keep up.

Goldenpaw followed, ignoring any comment except for the last one. Well, that’s unfortunate. He was working his tail off all the time doing various tasks rather than learning, so he didn’t learn how to swim.

Fawnheart ran all the way to the river and leapt in when she reached it. She stepped out and shook the water off her sleek fluffy pelt.
”Brrrrr,” she said has she felt a shiver ripple up her spine.
Okay, Goldenpaw. The best place to catch fish is just up here, it’s a little more shallow,” she spoke with authority - apprentices where the future of the clam and she could not be silly on this occasion anymore, “Once we get there I will show you the best way to catch fish. You will have chilly paws by the end but the whole clan will be impressed by how many fish we catch.”

Goldenpaw nodded. “My paws are already cold.” he said, watching Fawnheart and what she did.

Fawnheart remembered her training days and she smiled to herself, she was proud of this nervous little apprentice and his eagerness to learn.

“So you wanna step into the shallow edge of the river,” she stepped into the river as she spoke, “The current is kind of strong here even in the winter and the icy rocks make it slippery, BE CARFUL, if your paws slip swim like hell to the bank - swim horizontally with the current.”

”Once in the river stand very still, like any other prey, fish can hear you and will avoid any places with movement. Watch carefully for fish - quantity is better than size so make sure you don’t try to pick one that is too big for your size”, she glanced at the apprentice to make sure he was listening.

Goldenpaw nodded, rolling his eyes in annoyance at the loudness. At least, what he registered as loudness.

Fawnheart winced a little as the apprentice rolled his eyes, she was trying hard to be helpful around the clan but he could tell he was annoyed and she wished she could fix it.

“Once you spot a fish, wait for it to pass in front of you. Push your head forward and clamp your jaws around its body or head. Head kills it faster but grabbing it by its body makes it easier to hold,” she meowed self-courteously, ”Now watch.”

Fawnheart waited for a moment silently, her body was taunt and utterly still. Once she saw a fish she readied herself. In a split second she launched her large head down into the river - her strong jaws snapping - and pulled out a massive trout. She trotted over to the bank and dropped in near Goldenpaw, swiping some snow over it it to keep it fresh.

“I hope you were watching, it is your turn now,” not wanting to come off as rude she added with a purr, “I know you will do well!”
