It was early morning when Myrtlespeckle found herself sticking her head in the Apprentice's Den. There were plenty of apprentices in need of training, so she was here bright and early to see if any of them wanted some. If not, then she'd drag one by the scruff. Being lazy was unbecoming of a Windclan Apprentice. "I'll be offering training. Come with me if you want to learn how to fight." With that, the white and fawn she-cat ducked out, and waited for one of them to appear.

Training...yeah she should get some training in. Afterall, her mentor had been quite busy with other things lately and Rookpaw can't just sit around doing nothing while she waited. But fight? The dusky shaded apprentice wanted to retort that she knew how to, but if she did, the warrior might just pass on by and Rookpaw would lose this opportunity. Rookpaw just sucked up her pride and zipped her mouth shut.

"Can fight." She stated simply, following the warrior out of the apprentice den. Rookpaw corrected herself after giving into a big stretch. "I know the basics, a refresher would be nice but I need more than that if I am to become a warrior."

She'd hoped this white and fawn warrior would and could teach her some more advance moves.

There was an apprentice that took the bait. Myrtlespeckle couldn't help but allow a faint smile to form. Good, there were some that wanted to hear what she had to say. And this apprentice apparently knew a thing or two? She was prepared to show off something basic, but this news was better. With Rookpaw having more or less followed her out, Myrtlespeckle headed towards the entrance of the camp. "There's a space near camp where we can do that then. While we walk, tell me what kinds of moves you know. Being able to fight can mean a lot of things."

She'd followed Myrtlespeckle out into the clearing silently until she was prompted to talk. What did she know? Well, the bare minimum for a battle- or as much as Thornbird was willing to teach her on the first day of it. Mismatched eyes traced the clearing to the entrance of the camp before replying to the warrior. "Front paw blow and the strike variation, tail yank- though it didn't work on my mentor, leap and hold and belly rake."

"Not moves, but we already went over dodging and vital points." Rookpaw continued. Now that she'd listed them all, it seemed like she learned nothing. The dusky grey apprentice was sure there were other moves, better one, more unique tactics she could use to catch her opponent off guard, but unfortunately she couldn't bug her mentor. "Really basic, I know. Which is why you and I are here."

A decent basic skill set. They wouldn't be able to properly practice the tail tug on account of Myrtlespeckle's short tail, but she wasn't really here to beat up a kid. Myrtlespeckle settled down, blue eyes staring at Rookpaw. "Pretend there is a foe before you and run through the moves." She raised a paw and gestured to the space between them. "When you do a move, tell me how or when it would prove useful."

Her eyes narrowed in an exasperated expression. Stars, this was more talking than she expected. Probably the most she'd ever said in moons. The dusky apprentice settled down before reciting what she knew.

"Front paw blow and the strike. Hit your enemies, blind them, knock them in the face when they are closing in." Rookpaw replied, imagining a cat in front of her. She'd also imitate the moves as if she was shadow fighting.

"Tail yank, works on cats smaller than me, to knock them off their balance." She continued, adding a small note on who it works on. Rookpaw learned this the hard way when she had a spar with her mentor. "Doesn't work on my mentor, I tried."

"Leap and hold. Work on larger cats, or so my mentor says. Need to time my jump on and off if I don't want to get crushed. You can definitely shred someone's back with this one" Rookpaw continued her recitation. "And belly rake, if you get pinned. Shred them or kick them, but it gives you a chance to flee."

Rookpaw finished, her head held steady as she awaited for feedback correction or possibly more information.

Myrtlespeckle watched in silence until Rookpaw finished up. The moves were adequate enough, considering she was fighting the air. "Tail bites are harder, as if you're behind your enemy, you're better off going for one of their legs. However, as you stated, it can be a good quick attack to try and knock them off balance."

She stood up, stretching. "If the belly rake doesn't work, you can try feigning unconsciousness. Going limp is simple in theory, but it does rely on your foe not going for a killing blow. So it is typically better in fights where you're outmatched, in order to get a surprise attack in or to give you a chance to flee." There was a brief pause to let the words sink in. "You know how to leap onto a cat's back, but do you know how to pin them?"

"A leg bite, huh..." Rookpaw repeated and gave it some thought. She flicked her tail sharply, trying to visualize the steps. "Seems reasonable, but isn't there a higher possibility of getting kicked?"

Rookpaw was sure her mentor would have no problem chucking a paw into her face if she drew that close. She wasn't trying to question the warrior's knowledge, or she hoped that wasn't the air she gave off, Rookpaw just wanted to make sure she's learning everything she can. More often than not, the slender apprentice founds her words too blunt for some cats, leaving them either sad or pissed off. And then there was another move that casted doubt upon her. Playing dead. Her mismatched eyes narrowed with doubt, "Feigning unconsciousness? Will our opponent take that chance to let us go?"

Because she definitely wouldn't. Though she'd want to win a fight fair and square, Rookpaw doubt she'll let someone go if a real battle ensues. She wouldn't leave something as unfinished as that.

And to the last question. "No."

"If trying to bite directly from the side, yes. Grabbing their hind leg from an angle will make it more difficult for them to try and kick you loose. While you run the risk of them hitting you with a front paw, you would have them pinned." Myrtlespeckle explained. It made sense, at least to her. Though with that question, and Rookpaw's following question, she added, "Much of fighting involves figuring out what your opponent is like, and acting accordingly. Every move has drawbacks to go with its usefulness. Brute strength alone won't win everything if you don't know how to use it properly. You noticing the potential drawbacks of an attack is good."

That was a lot of words, and this was to be battle practice. The pale furred she-cat exhaled, before continuing. "Pinning a foe is similar to jumping on their back. Except, instead of getting on their back, you leap at them to knock them over and get on top. When you're on top, you limit what your foe can do and have a chance to attack, with the downside of your belly being exposed."

There were other potential drawbacks, but she figured it would be better to show off in a demonstration. "Try the move without claws. I won't avoid the first time, to let you get a feel for it."

She followed along Myrtlespeckles' words, nodding slowly, and imagining the moves. She wasn't fully convinced that it was a fool proof move, but Rookpaw decided she'd trust this warrior now and learn all that she can. If these moves doesn't work, she'll just have to find a way around them.

The slender dusky apprentice nodded and followed along the next step. Pinning someone down. That'd certainly be useful. It was a move that her mentor used on her, but...would this even work with someone her size? Augh, curse this small body she was born into. If Rookpaw was anything like her siblings maybe this would be a breeze. Or- maybe she'll just have to push harder.

As soon as the warrior let her, Rookpaw charged forward knocking her paws and body against the warrior's before attempting to pin the Myrtlespeckle down.
