Fallenspirit stretched in the sunlight, baring his shiny white teeth, and glaring at the sky with icy blue eyes. Today was not- the day. Dreams of fire and screaming cats, again. When would these StarClan forsaken nightmares end. He sat in a spot of sunlight in the clearing, taking the moment of peace and quiet to enjoy.

Okay, if anything, her inability to yet swim was starting to become a hassle. Spiderpaw stared into the tiny stream too small to swim in of the clan camp. Her tail tip twitched back and forth as she looked at the new scar the forever bared her left canine on her muzzle. At least the infection had abated and the injury had mostly healed... but it was unfortunate that her anxiety had stopped her from seeing Berryshine before an infection had caused permanent damage to the tissue.

Spiderpaw sighed and turned away from her reflection. With Hollylynx missing, she was starting to realize that, despite her receiving a new mentor, she would have to start taking her training into her own paws... oh, stars, why her? That was so terrifying! She didn't even know what she was supposed to do! Hollylynx never finished the territory tour, so she would have to pick that up again with Softsky...

Her eyes fell onto the black and red tom that seemed to be the only one currently unoccupied in the clearing. His teeth were bared at the sky... what a strange expression. Maybe... maybe she shouldn't bother him. Spiderpaw felt torn between asking him for help with swimming, and not bothering the cat that was scowling at the sky as though it had personally attacked him.

Had she stared too long? Oops... Spiderpaw quickly averted her gaze back to the stream. Maybe today wasn't the day. Perhaps she would just talk to Softsky about it when she next saw her new mentor...

Fallenspirit's gaze fell onto the apprentice, just a few fox-lenghts away. Her eyes had quickly averted, but that didn't stop the tom's irritation. He was growing tired of the constant looks, as if these cats had anything to judge him on.

"Were you just gonna stare or was there something you needed," he spat, his eyes cold. It was only an apprentice, but at this rate, there wasn't any cat safe from his irritated rampage. "Well?," he repeated, growing impatient.

Spiderpaw flinched at the sharpness of Fallenspirit's tone, ears flattening on her head as though she had just been struck by the tom. Oh, oh no oh no oh no... She had offended him! Spiderpaw looked down at her paws, ashamed that she had upset him so much by thoughtlessly letting herself stare. She should've just waited for Softsky.

"I-I'm sorr-ry," She stammered, not daring to look back at the angry tom. "I-I didn't me-ean to b-bother you... I w-was... th-thinking... ab-bout a-a-asking someone t-to... t-teach me... to sw-wim..." She explained quietly, stuttering despite her best efforts to keep her anxiety down. She wanted nothing more than to sprint back into the apprentice den and hide back in her nest in that moment. He would probably be even more upset if she just ran away... or not? She didn't know. It didn't seem worth the risk.

The apprentice was a sputtering mess, and Fallenspirit's ears perked, trying to make out whatever she was saying. Had he come off sharply, yes. She did clearly need help. Not just to swim- she clearly needed to get over her clearly out of control anxiety.

"Why can't you swim at your age," he snorted. There was only one liable excuse for this, and if he remembered correctly, Spiderpaw had been reassigned last meeting. So his suspicions must've been true. "You're spineless old mentor must've not told you anything, then miraculously went missing so now you're left with no clue how to do basic crap," he spat, not so much at the apprentice, but at the idea of the reassignment. "Ridiculous," the tom growled.

Fallenspirit let himself cool down, wiping away the haunting nightmares from his mind, and taking into mind that this apprentice was still young. The anxiety would make it near impossible to train, or it could make it easier. Either way, RiverClan needed it's warriors to be able to swim.

Alright, I can help you learn to swim," the tom mewed flatly. His icy gaze fell on the apprentice, most the irritation having left his eyes, now just a flicker lost in the depths of blue flames. "We will have to go to Sedgewater Valley, on the very far end, far from the rapids," he mewed.

Ah... Spiderpaw felt smaller and smaller as the tom continued his rant. Of course she should know how to swim... maybe it would've been better if she'd just... gone off on her own and figured it out? She felt far more at home out in the forest. If only the rules allowed her to go off on her own without a warrior. She continued to look down at her paws as he went on to hiss and spit about Hollylynx. Spiderpaw hadn't minded her, and even felt a tinge of irritation at Fallenspirit calling her a spineless...

Though, perhaps it was true and she just hadn't known Hollylynx well enough. The only thing she had gotten from the warrior had been half of a territory tour, after all. She could redirect that irritation at her previous mentor. She had left her to figure it out on her own. At least her dad had taught her to hunt and Heroneye had taught her to fight.

It hurt to remember Hollylynx promising to bring Spiderpaw out to Lionsbeach to see the sunset.

"Th-thank you..." She mumbled as Fallenspirit finally calmed down and said he would help her swim. She chanced a glance up at the tom as she stood to follow him when he was ready to lead the way. He seemed to have calmed down a bit. Sedgewater valley... She remembered that Hollylynx had said they weren't allowed to go there... but that was a whole moon ago. Perhaps the rules had changed, already. She could take this opportunity to familiarize herself with the scent of Windclan while they were out there.

Fallenspirit nodded curtly. "I- I apologize for lashing out," he mewed briskly. The tom knew he had reacted rather quickly, without any sort of a thought. "Firesong would've never done that. No, shut up, Firesong is gone, he's been gone," the tom argued internally, his mind flickering.

"I've changed my mind, we are going to go to Lionsbeach instead," the tom mewed. "I don't want to risk the rapids at Sedgewater, especially when you have no clue what you're doing," he mewed coolly. Lionsbeach would hopefully grant the apprentice a chance at swimming in steady water.

Fallenspirit began padding outside of the camp, checking every few yards to ensure that the apprentice was following. As for the anxious apprentice, he had to figure out how to break her out of that shell. She had seemed mildly irritated by his words about her old mentor, but she hadn't said anyhting."What did your old mentor teach you," the tom grumbled, emphasizing mentor in a mocking like tone.

The last thing Spiderpaw had expecting was for the warrior to apologize. She nodded politely to acknowledge it, though found herself having a hard time relaxing even then. It did feel a bit reasonable to the apprentice, she realized, that she wouldn't be able to just calm all the way down just because an angry cat had calmed down and apologized.

Ah, how unfortunate, she wouldn't actually see Sedgewater valley. It was a bit relieving to know that she wouldn't have to worry about rapids, though. She had absolutely no confidence in her ability to fight moving water. Lionsbeach, though, she was actually most familiar with since she and Minnowrain had gone out there when he taught her to hunt. That's also where she encountered the crab that had caused the scar on her maw.

She glanced up at Fallenspirit as he spoke once again, her lanky legs working to keep up with his pace out of camp. "Oh...uhm... We only... The only th-thing we did was... most of a tour..." She mumbled, however, she refused to be seen as completely useless. "B-but... My d-I mean, Minnowrain taught me how to hunt... and Heroneye gave me some basic and a-advanced fighting training..." She added. It was mostly swimming that was holding her back on the basic requirements of an apprentice's training.

"Ahh, so not all the warriors in the camp are completely incompetent, good to know," the tom mewed. Basic hunting and some advanced battle training were good to have, so it was just the swimming that was holding back the apprentice.

"Well, I suppose that isn't too bad," the tom started, his gaze unshifting from the scene ahead as the walked deeper into the forest. Fallenspirit remembered getting hunting and battle training from his dad, Flamespirit. The tom snapped away from that memory quickly, refusing to show anymore emotion.

Fallenspirit felt the ground begin to get sandier and looser under his paws, until the beach was in clear sight. Seastones would be close by, but the opposite direction of where they were heading. The ocean opened up into an endless expanse of water. "Alright, well, this will be where you learn to swim," the tom mewed.

Fallenspirit turned and trotted into the waters, going farther out, the water covering paws, his legs, his shoulders, until he was just a head bobbing on the surface. "Start on the shore," the tom yelled, loud enough to reach the apprentice. "I'm out here in case I need to get you," he mewed briskly, conserving his air.

Spiderpaw's ear twitched at Fallenspirit's comment. Of course not all of the warriors in Riverclan were incompetent! Her dad, the Lionhearts, and she was sure there were more! The apprentice narrowed her eyes at the ground as she followed the warrior. Why was he so upset with Riverclan, anyway? It was his home as much as hers, right? She hadn't met someone so cynical before. It didn't seem like a happy way to live.

Spiderpaw looked up again as the earth began changing to sand. She could smell the water long before she could actually see the beach. That weird, salty, fishy scent that she had talked to her dad about. She avoided any holes in the sand, wondering if there were more crabs hiding away somewhere. She really didn't want to visit Berryshine because of a crab again. Maybe she would just avoid them entirely from now on... Though, this did remind her that she her dad had said something about the smell coming from the water, and that it also tasted funny.

The tabby looked up again as Fallenspirit spoke again and watched him slip into the water. He almost disappeared into the water, just becoming a distant, bobbing head in the water. Start on the shore?

The tabby padded up to the water. It lapped at her paws as she bent down to sniff at the liquid. It was quite tempting to just...

One lap of her tongue was all she needed. Spiderpaw spit and shook her head at the flavor of the salty water. Her dad had been right! It did taste funny! It was so salty that she couldn't stand it and her mouth was immediately dry. The blue tabby made a face as she wished she could drink some water that didn't taste like it would dry up her whole body.
