"Right, I think here's a good spot!" Duskleaf announced, finding an open patch just outside camp. Perfect for battle training! He sat down on the grass, curling his tail around his paws as he waited for Riftpaw and Beaverpaw to settle before starting the lesson.

Treading lightly, the split tom padded towards his mentor. Riftpaw sniffed the air, eyes searching the area as Duskleaf settled down with his tail wrapped around his paws in the patch. Yes, this was nice- it would do. Not that he particularly cared where they trained. He was most excited to finally be able to swim in the river and hunt.

Okay, so both apprentices were here, good. "Right, so because of RiverClan's current…situation…" Duskleaf began, "You never really know what to expect, so I want to make sure you both know how to defend yourselves should you ever have to. After this, I’ll let you both choose what to do next, but right now I need to know you can fight." He didn't dare say the last part; that after Mousepaw's death he'd been plagued by a terrible guilt for not teaching him enough about combat which he still felt awful about but tried to hide. If — StarClan forbid — that ever happened again, it would break his heart. 'No! Don't think like that!' He told himself, trying to push the guilt to the back of his mind and focus on what was going on right now.

"If you're fighting against a larger cat, a fully grown warrior perhaps, there's one move that will come in very useful for you." Duskleaf began, standing up and turning to face Riftpaw and Beaverpaw side on. "So you want to get out the way of their attacks, if you leap onto an opponent's back and grip with your claws, you're out the way of their claws and their fangs, you're also in the right position to give them some pretty serious injuries." This was another advantage of having two apprentices, this move worked even better if it was more than one smaller cat fighting a larger opponent. "This move's great for one cat fighting a larger opponent, but even better for two! How about we try it? Both of you, leap onto my back and you'll see how much of an advantage this gives you." And then he remembered he'd told them that they should dig their claws into an opponent's back. "Just uh…don't extend your claws, I'm not an enemy warrior so there's no need to actually claw my back to bits." He said with a laugh. "Let’s have a go then." He said.

Almost instantly dropping down into a crouch, Riftpaw began prowling towards his mentor, his pupils huge in excitement and making his face seem even more kit-like than before. Then, with a grunt as he launched himself off the ground, the tom aimed for Duskleaf's shoulders, confidence racing through his veins.

( Riftpaw rolled a 6 - uh oh LOL )

...Though clearly his confidence was misplaced, as he soared right over Duskleaf and tumbled into the ground next to him. Pelt hot with embarrassment, he immediately scrambled up and began grooming his fur. Still, he said nothing, only letting his eyes burn into the ground as he avoided Beaverpaw and Duskleaf's gazes.

Okay, so jump onto Duskleaf's back.

Beaverpaw jumped about the same time Riftpaw did, though winced at bit as Riftpaw went right over Duskleaf.
He hoped that didn't hurt him or anything.
His thoughts came to an abrupt stop when he landed on Duskleaf's back, though definitely a bit wobbly.

Duskleaf had said not to use claws, so Beaverpaw didn't, and he quickly kind of fell off of his back, though he managed to catch himself on his feet.

Both apprentices attempted to jump onto Duskleaf’s back at the same time, although it seemed Riftpaw had overshot completely. Beaverpaw stuck the landing, albeit was a little unsteady at first after landing. Although in a real battle that wouldn’t be a problem since he’d be using his claws, Duskleaf thought. "Riftpaw, you alright?" He said, turning his head gently as to not make it more difficult for Beaverpaw to hold on. He hoped Riftpaw would try again, but instead the apprentice started grooming his fur instead. "Riftpaw, even when you don’t succeed, don't be discouraged by it, don't let it get to you. What makes a strong warrior is getting back up, and trying again." He mewed with an encouraging tone. "Have another go."

"Beaverpaw, one thing you might notice is that you're in the perfect position to give an opponent some serious injuries without them being able to fight back. Don't worry too much if you're finding it hard to hold on, in a real battle you'd grip as hard as possible with your claws." He decided to wait for Riftpaw to jump onto his back before explaining how to avoid injury and how a warrior might try to counter this.

Riftpaw felt as though his pelt was going to light on fire after Duskleaf commented on his mistake, eyes glued to the ground. However, he did as he was asked and shook his fur out, bushing it out. Clearing his throat, he crouched down and wiggled his small tail as he sized up his mentor. After a brief pause, he lept again...

( Riftpaw rolled a 2 )

...and came a bit too short, instead slamming into his mentor's side. His chest burned with shame. "I'm sorry." He gasped, not even turning to look in his mentor's eyes nor towards Beaverpaw. Beaverpaw had done so well on the first try. Why couldn't he?

“Okay.” Beaverpaw said to Duskleaf as he told him about how to attack properly from up here.
Right now, though, too wobbly when he couldn’t cling on.

So, he jumped off.

Right after, he watched Riftpaw try again.
Oh, he seemed upset that he wasn’t getting it.
“I’m sure you’ll get it!” Beaverpaw tried to chime in.
