Hailfire pulled back, muzzle rippling with irritation. A low growl rumbled in her throat, but without a word, she stalked after Lilytail.
As they entered the territory, she thought back to the coyote. Of COURSE it was hard-won prey. The volunteers had fought hard, and had definitely deserved the trophy they had brought back. But it wasn't a prey animal. Lionstar was insane if he thought she was going to eat that. It would be like... like cats eating cats. It wasn't right.
She let out a huff and darted in front of Lilytail. Her claws dug into the grass, and she plastered a very obviously fake smile onto her muzzle. Each word was strained and rough. "Where would you like to look."

“Anywhere you desire,” Lilytail replied. “After all, I’ll be eating coyote.” She walked forward a few steps, scenting for prey. She didn't smell much. ’The prey might be frightened by all the excitement concerning the coyotes.’ “We should probably fish. I'm not smelling much prey. Sedgewater Valley would be a good place.”

"Pshhh, of course I can!" While the apprentice was boasting, she hadn't noticed the absence of the warrior. When she looked around, she realized Leafbreeze had already started the race. "Wait! W-What? That's not fair!" Mosspaw spluttered before taking off after her. She pushed her paws faster and faster, but of course, still fell behind her mother.

The tabby merely grunted in response to Lilytail's first statement, but her head shot up at the next. "Are you stupid?" she snapped. "We can't fish! New-leaf is nearly here, and with new-leaf comes snow melt. The river is positively swollen with it. If you want to slip in and drown, fine by me, but I'm not falling in after you." She spun around with a whisk of her tail, nearly smacking Lilytail in the face. "If you're not smelling anything, it's because your nose is broken, obviously. The battle with the coyotes was all the way in WindClan's camp, so the prey here won't be disturbed. Stop making excuses. There's some over here." She began to move in a different direction.

Lilytail was slightly taken aback by the molly's rudeness, but she didn't let it show. ’My nose is perfectly fine! If anything's broken here, it's your attitude! “Well, whatever you say,” Lily tail said quietly, just in case there was prey there, which was doubtful. “I meant that we could try finding a small stream created by the snowmelt and maybe catch a water vole or a few small fish there.” She was annoyed that Hailfire thought she was stupid enough to fish in the main river. Of course she knew it was swollen. ’...Maybe everyone does think I'm that stupid,’ She thought, beginning to worry. ‘Maybe everyone views me as feather-brained.’ Lilytail pushed aside those thoughts for the time being and quietly padded after Hailfire.

"If I had wanted to get my paws wet, I would have done so already," she sniffed. "There's no way I'm going to risk stepping into freezing slush today. We're doing this hunt my way." She paused to taste the air, the gestured with her muzzle at a small clump of weeds. "Mouse," she whispered. "We're downwind right now, it can't smell us. Creep around the front and chase it towards me, I'll get it."

Lilytail began to follow Hailfire's advice when she suddenly remembered. ‘Mouse dung! The Gathering's tonight! She twitched her ears in annoyance that she had forgotten. ’We can always go after we catch this mouse...If Hailfire doesn't yell at me about something this time. Every time we hunt together, she always has to criticize me. I'm so fed up with her!’ The molly chased the mouse towards Hailfire, hoping she was paying attention.

As the mouse ran toward her in a panic, she slammed her paw down on top of it, effectively breaking its spine. Hailfire bent down to sniff at it, then shrugged. "Decent catch, I'd say," she said. "But, Lilytail, dear, might you be just a little bit faster next time? We don't have all night, and once mouse is hardly going to cut it." Quickly she scraped out a shallow hole, dropped the limp body inside, and kicked dirt back over it. "Let's keep going."

“Wait,” Lilytail called out. “There’s a Gathering tonight, remember? We need to head over to Seastones. I don't want to miss it. The molly changed direction and starting heading towards Seastones. “There should be other prey on the fresh-kill pile. And if there isn't, we can just go back out later.”

Leafbreeze was a couple tail-lengths ahead of Mosspaw, continually glancing back to make sure the apprentice was still in view. Once she'd noticed the entrance to the clearing come into view, the silver molly slowed her pace to the point where Mosspaw would be able to catch up again. "Look, we're almost back. It seems I might just win our little race." Her tone was playful, yet challenging. Leafbreeze had wanted Mosspaw to win the race without making it obvious she was intentionally slowing, so she hoped the playfully challenging words would encourage the dark molly to try her best in this last stretch.
