"Bravo, my dear. Absolutely splendid! Well done indeed. And to think, it was a prey you've had no training to hunt prior to this. But then, I suppose it is to be expected from a WindClan apprentice," Dapplebreeze mewed as she approached at last, pride clearly gleaming in her eyes as if she were talking to an apprentice of her own. In her eyes, all WindClan apprentices were to be cherished, whether you were their mentor or not irrelevant. Cottonpaw and Shrikepaw were no different to her.
"Now, that is one toad down, but we should be catching more as we go along. Of course, it doesn't have to be just toads. Why... I believe my ears are catching signs of something else... Hush now, my dears. Let us see if this old she-cat can keep up with the energy of you youngsters."
In an instant she was down, her hunting crouch fluid. Well practiced. While battling would always be her one true love, what was a fight if not the hunt of sturdier, more menacing prey? Now, however, she heard the scurrying of claws on dirt. She spotted the motion of not quite dried grass - frosted instead thanks to the dampness of the marshlands - approaching it silently, blue eyes focused intently as her shoulders rolled beneath her pelt, muscles tense and ready to strike when-
A wren fluttered speedily out of the underbrush, clearly having realized it had been had. The apprentices' playful training had no doubt alerted it to their presence here, but it was too late. Dapplebreeze was far from the inexperienced paws that accompanied her today. By instinct forged from moons of hunting, the she-cat took to the air, snatching the bird between her teeth and crunching down, its life gone before it had the chance to realize what had happened. The one difference she gave hunting and battling, she supposed. She always played with her opponents in combat, but she would never do the same to a creature she killed for sustenance. It was not in good taste, to mock that which kept you alive and allowed you to prosper.
Dropping the wren, the fury turned to glance at the two apprentices, hoping the demonstration had been adequate in showcasing how hunting skills would indeed grow and improve in time. A small, encouraging smile politely lighting her expression, she placed a paw over her prey, tail twitching behind her. They had not caught as much as she would have liked, but the longer they stuck around, the longer the looming threat of a ShadowClan patrol bumping into them and getting bad ideas lingered. It would be best if the two darlings got ready to leave. Perhaps one more investigation... see if both Cottonpaw and Shrikepaw were up to tracking down some prey? And then they could leave. Back home where the air ran free from the stench that was so heavy in the breeze here.
"We should be thinking of going now, my darlings. Let's see if we can catch something more before we head home, shall we?" she purred in a soft, motherly voice, placing her wren besides Cottonpaw's toad soon after.

| Sorry for the delay in response here. Had a fair couple of Lightningstorm responses that I had to take care of and they took all of my free time! I had gotten us an extension until the 20th, though, so feel free to catch something here or have the two of them play a bit more and Dapplebreeze will be escorting them back home in her next post to make sure the patrol doesn't get into trouble. |

Hawkpaw nodded, nosing a tree. [rolls a 20] The tom grinned as he uncovered six pieces of moss. Now he had, what, nine pieces? Great!

Cottonpaw
he/him | Windclan Apprentice | 11 moons The Collector - Lucky Duck T3 The Stowaway Child
Cottonpaw watched as Dapplebreeze made her catch, she was an efficient warrior. It was impressive how well practised, but Cottonpaw supposed that a lot of that came with age. At her suggestion he gave the surroundings a courtesy sniff and watch, but there wasn’t any movement left to be seen. At least nothing he was intuitive enough to pickup on.
Finally he resigned himself to being complete and approached Dapplebreeze ready to leave, a gentle smile resting on his maw.
”T.th.thanks f.f.for c.c.coming w.w.with us!” Cottonpaw wanted to express more but kept it short. It felt like the day had been a sucess, despite his brief emotional setbacks when it came to Mr Toad.

Hehe, look at them go! Her smile shone in response to Dapplebreeze's praise. This was far far nicer than her previous patrol - no horrible tunnels to encounter, just lovely open space, and fun fun hunting! Sure it might be muddy (and maybe even a bit creepy looking with all the willows) but it was better than being underground. Oh, oh, and Dapplebreeze had noticed something! Shrikepaw couched down, intent on staying quiet as she watched Dapplebreeze move - through her tail was dramatically swinging back and forth in anticipation, no doubt making some noise.
WOW.
She watched Dapplebreeze's expert hunting skills in awe. She hoped she could be like that someday. all this time, she'd thought hunting was about chasing and running around, but it looked far more like lots of slow and steady movements - then one final killer pounce. Cool.
Alright, home time soon. She stood alert, hoping to see something she could catch. though, she didn't have much faith in her chances of success. "I wanna be able to hunt as cool as you, Dapplebreeze!" She chirped - then her eyes caught on something. Just ahead, on WindClan's side of the border, scurried a rabbit. She held back a gasp, making sure she stayed super quiet.
[rolling for a miracle catch LOL - she'll only get it if she lands a nat 20
D20 rolled: 15 - rip]
Still, such quietness wasn't exactly helpful. the rabbit was obviously already aware of their presence and was making a swift run for it. So, she made chase - and though she was fast, it seemed rabbits were even faster. It was a briefly exciting chase, but she clearly wasn't about to succeed - and she didn't want to run too far from the group, so after a few fox lengths she simply stopped, and huffed as she watched it retreat into the undergrowth. "No fair. Those things are fast!" She explained as she plodded back.

The whispering wetlands... what an eerie place. The fog, the croaking frogs, the creaking branches of trees without leaves. It was a place to easily get turned around in, but one that hardly bothered shadowclan cats, so used to the fog and darkness. It was familiar, though still creepy, to plod through it.
The closer Mosstangle and Emberfern grew to the windclan border, the less dense the fog became, as though the mires on the other side sent a strong breeze just to break it down. Willows began to creep into view. "Thank you for coming," Mosstangle purred to the older warrior. "I was told there is wisteria on the willows on our border with Windclan."

The walk to the border was more than enough to wake up the older warrior, the chilly air of the early morning doing most of the work. The fur on the back of her shoulders always seemed to prickle when she arrived, but a deep breath soothed any uneasy sensations that came with the border's eeriness. How did Windclan cats deal with strong winds without the trees? The gloomy woods, though messy, were far more comfortable.
"A fan of flowers?" Smokefern asked, frost colored hues scanning the border. First for cats from another clan, then for the pale purple flowers. It would look nice in Peachfuzz's pelt, she thought idly. The wisterias were different from most of the other flowers that bloomed in the marshlands. All small petals drooping towards the earth. "Lilies are easier to find around the territory I've found, though don't come in the same color as wisterias."

"I think they're pretty, but they're not for me..." Mosstangle admitted as she eyed the border. She rarely saw wisteria and wasn't quite sure she knew what she was looking for, just knew how they had been described to her and an inkling of a memory where she might have seen them before. "They're... Blackjaw's favorite flower."
"Just for an apology!" Mosstangle added quickly, though even she wasn't convinced by her own tone. She flicked her tail. Was it just for an apology? She wanted to apologize... that part was true. "We went stargazing, and I think I made him uncomfortable... I don't know, I felt kinda weird... and then I started avoiding him... and now I just want us to go back to being around each other again..." She said, words spilling out as she has spent days not telling anyone about it.

Smokefern couldn't help but chuckle and shake her head as Mosstangle hastily explained why they were out here. "Felt weird you say? Like your pelt was burning when he glanced at you? Or that something you otherwise thought would be a simple remark turned out to feel very stupid the moment you said it?"
It almost made her wistful for her apprentice moons, though she quickly remembered why she would not want to go back to that. Starclan, she was a mess back then. She wasn't all too familiar with Blackjaw, though she had seen the tom around camp at times. Now that the tabby mentioned it, she had seen the two sitting together once or twice. "He'll appreciate the thoughtful gift, if he has a good head on his shoulders."

Mosstangle stared for a moment at Smokefern, feeling her face get hot. It felt a bit like the older she-cat knew something that the tabby didn't... or that she was denying. "Yeah, but we're friends. Just, really close friends." She replied. "And he does have a reallu good head on his shoulders. He's really smart and nice and polite, but that's why I'm worried... I don't want to mess anything up." Her mouth was going and going and going...
Didn't Blackjaw tell her what wisteria looked like? Why was she having trouble remembering anything except the knot that was in her belly and his eyes looking up at the stars... ugh! Something about little pink petals and hanging down from... willows, right? Mosstangle moved a bit closer to the border, seeking out the elusive tree that had pink flowers hanging from vines.
