she hadn't expected how much it would hurt. mind still flashing with images of her father, her father with blood on his claws, her father screaming at her- cobwebfern's heart ached, she felt ill with how much it hurt to visibly see the bond between her and stormy.. no, not stormy, anymore, she wasn't a sad little kit anymore--stormstar.. breaking. ' um. r-right. g-good-goodnight. ' cobwebfern's voice shook and she turned.
her paws shook, and as she turned from stormstar's den and exited, she let them fall, only allowing herself to get halfway to her own den before breaking into sobs. she slumped into her nest, shoulders shaking as she was wracked with tears. she wanted to talk to stormy so bad, wanted to make this right so bad, but the pure agony she felt was too debilitating. cobwebfern felt a bit like her world was crumbling down slowly, and while this was overdramatic, she told herself, it hurt awfully.
stormstar's feelings about her were reciprocated- she had thought she was done with this. she thought her dad was gone, that the thoughts about him that plagued her were gone-

Berryshine slunk into the den, her ears flattened and head down. Stagheart had offered to go in place of her, to be the one to tell the news — but Willowtail and Daisypaw had clearly needed him more at the moment, a strong rock while the other two crumbled. And Berry would be lying if she didn't want to escape the den that now reeked of herbs, sickness, and death — a reminder of her loss, a reminder of her failure. She hadn't been able to save Weepingpaw, and that knowledge would never leave her mind.
The pungent scent of lavender clung to her pelt as she neared Stormstar, dulling the lingering scent of something else far more daunting underneath. As she approached, her voice was raspy and low, barely a whisper in the quiet den.
"S-... S-Stormstar, I... need to speak with you." The medicine cat managed to get out, her tone heavy with grief and shame, eyes still fixed on the floor.
It was later in the day with things winding down, and yet the leader was restless. She paced within her den, wondering why her stomach was churning so nervously, and why she felt the prickling sensation of anxiety in her paws. Something was wrong... she didn't know what, or where, but-
Berries voice at her den had her head snapping over. The grief. The shame. "Come in," the leader beckoned almost immediately, turning to face the medicine cat fully. Her blue eyes were wide, searching Berries' face for any indication what she was here for. Lavender scent drifted towards her and she blinked.
"...What happened?" ...She knew what that was used for.

Stormstar - RiverClan Leader
And there it was, the headache she was hoping to avoid. Stormstar stood her ground, staring at the elder and not faltering. Respect and honor, yes, but she was this Clan's leader, and the final decision on those who remained within her walls was up to her. "He's been exiled from RiverClan." Her tone was a bit more hard, definite. Blue eyes watched, hoping that Blazestalk wouldn't do anything... drastic.

The tom knew better, "Tsk, it's not like he ever listens. How was his health when he left the territory?" He asked his leader.

Startled as Cobs leapt to her paws, Stormstar's claws immediately came out. Was there someone coming? A threat she hadn't seen? But... the leader couldn't scent anything, though she continued watching her kid sister as her fur flattened and she sat down. What in the world was happening? Stormstar had thought that... that this had been left behind. She had seemed to strong on the day of her warrior ceremony, so... not afraid anymore.
And now there were secrets. Blue eyes shifted towards Cobs, a mixture of shock and hurt flashing in them. For a moment she faltered, the responsibilities of this Clan's leader falling off her shoulders in favor of protecting her kid sister. The tear she felt between the two was more painful than she could've expected. What was it that Cobs felt like she could talk to Berries about but not her? Was doing her job as leader going to push Cobs away?
...Was this what had happened between her and her brother, coming back to repeat itself?
"Until I say otherwise, you're not goin' to any Gatherin'," Stormstar clarified, ignoring the pain in her chest as she had to correct Cobs once again. She needed the medicine cat apprentice to know that this decision wasn't up to her, and as much as it pained her to speak in this tone to her sister, Stormstar had an entire Clan to think about.
And then came the defeat. Watching as Cobs offered no other reasoning or words, except those to dismiss herself, the leader sighed. "...Fine. Go, then." Swallowing whatever betrayal she had felt and hoping it cleared from her gaze, the leader looked at Berries. "Berries, I'll need you to stay a moment." If Cobs wanted to end this conversation, slip out and not understand that Stormstar was trying to do what was best for RiverClan, then so be it.

Berryshine had also leapt to her paws when Cobwebfern suddenly rounded on her, the already-jumpy she-cat's fur standing on end in a flash. What happened? Was someone there? Why did Cobwebfern seem to look at her like that?
But it was over almost as quickly as it happened, and Berryshine relaxed slightly, a frown crossing her maw of concern and confusion. The disappointment and tension was palpable between Stormstar and Cobwebfern, and Berry felt almost helpless just to witness and add her own uncertain thoughts here or there.
When Cob mentioned to speak to her later, Berryshine — as naive as she could be about such things — was able to pick up that Cobwebfern was clearly concealing something that she didn't want to bring up here. "Uh... o-okay, yeah. Sure," she mewed hesitantly, not wanting to push anything in this rather tense moment.
And then Cobwebfern was dismissed, clearly upset, Berryshine felt an instinctive urge to follow and comfort her, staring after the grey-and-white tail that disappeared through the entrance. But, despite being young, the medicine cat had already matured beyond her moons in many ways. So ignoring her empathy, pushing it off till later, she turned and faced Stormstar. Nodding solemnly with a worried look on her face, the small brown molly took in a deep breath and focused. "Y-Yes, of course, Stormstar."
Asking 'what is it?' would feel rather redundant in this scenario, considering she could just about guess full well what Stormstar was going to say. So she went quiet for a moment and waited, holding herself poised yet concerned as she faced her leader. Thank the stars she felt comfortable around Stormstar, and that the leader wasn't mad at her directly — if she had been, Berry might have been a shaky little mess. But somehow, StarClan help her, she was able to be a somewhat-stable force for once in a river that's waters were rushing around her. If only for this moment.

Berryshine had been mentally preparing herself for this conversation the whole way, and yet still felt tongue-tied for a moment. It was a strange feeling; her heart was racing against a heavy body, weighed down in grief, yet she also felt restless. Her paws shuffled in her typical nervous habit, but this time, just to get out the restlessness she'd felt ever since realizing Weepingpaw was dead. Like she just had to keep doing something.
Taking in a deep breath, Berryshine forced herself to calm down enough to speak. Though this affected her personally, she knew she could handle this... if only the shame of not being able to cure Weepingpaw would stop stabbing her heart like a thorn. The small brown molly steeled herself and slowly lifted her head, meeting Stormstar's knowing gaze. It almost seemed like the leader knew what this was for already, which helped the words tumble out a bit more easily, even if it still felt like trying to drip thick honey from a leaf.
"Weepingpaw, he's..." She paused, swallowing hard. Breathe. She'd been through enough, she knew she could handle this simple thing of reporting what happened... but guilt made announcing this so much harder. "H-He's been missing, as you know, a-and... I went for a walk today and... found him." Another breath, narrowing her eyes, pushing through. You did all you could; just say it. She stood up straighter, forcing the words out through her tightened throat.
"H-He's... dead, Stormstar. Daisypaw said she saw him going for a walk on his own, a-and next thing I know... I find him in the grass, gone." Leafy-green eyes dulled over in grief and she lowered her head again once the bitter news had finally left her tongue. "I... couldn't save him. The fever, the infection, it... i-it was everywhere..."
Stagheart's words echoed in her head: 'You did what you could, kid.'
But it hadn't been enough. Of course, it wouldn't always be enough, she knew that and how the world worked... yet it still stung.
