⸝⸝⸝ 彡 ☽ six moons ✮ he . him ✮ shadowclan apprentice ☾ 彡 ⸝⸝⸝
huge chocolate brown tom with darker brown markings that go down his back and limbs; lighter brown underbelly and chest. has a striped tail and small, tufted ears with round, blazing golden eyes. has thick fluffy fur and a raccoon-like striped tail. he has a single tooth that overlaps his bottom lip and is commonly covered in mud. he is missing half of his right ear; smells like dirt & wood. struggles with a stutter. ⋆。˚ ☁︎ ˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆
⊱ ۫ ׅ ✧ The mud was all warm, compressing his limbs. He watched Mama from the hole he had dug, it was shallow enough just to give a dip in the cold soil. His short tail swished back and forth, peering curiously to watch her movements. He wanted to learn from her. She had everything he could ever know inside her head! Duh, obviously, she was the leader for a REAASSOON! They couldn't have an idiot taking them into battle!!! .... Waait, wait, wait. Houndpaw paused in his pondering. Oh no. He couldn't be the idiot charging into battle, either. Mama Mistle had already warned him off for doin' that. (He didn't know the rat was a MONSTER!!)
The apprentice slowly arose from his mud pile, paws stepping quietly onto the floor. His thin pupils quickly became big, wide saucers - turning his typically huge, golden irises into a thin color wrapping around the parameter. Ever since he was a little he always, always, always loved pouncing on his Mama. (Okay, really any of his family members but she was extra big which made it way more fun!) It was his version of a hug, really.
He crouched low behind her, a surprisingly decent crouch now that Mistlewhisker had taught him how to hunt. Unfortunately for Houndpaw, he could not control the rumbling that was rising from his throat as he crept closer and closer with bubbling anticipation. He could not help but feel pure joy when he was being a little mischievous.
Sneaking as close as he can before all of the sudden, Houndpaw pushed off the ground and attempted to pounce on his Mother ─ though very likely ending with him rolling on the floor to pop right back up. Unless she was super distracted. "HAI !! HAI !! HAI MA!!" He yipped, flashing a tooth-filled goofy grin. "T-teacchhh me hooow t-to fight-t like you? P-p-pleaaasseee? And and - t-thank you?" He requested, using his very very very VERY best manners. Surely, she couldn't stay no. His torn ear flickered, tail swishing excitedly back and forth.
.. He neglected to mention his run in with a monster to his Mama. Not yet, anyway. He needed to get her a super impressive gift before he could share his tale of horrors. Also, he.. he reallyy didn't want her to give him a look like Miss Ma-Mistle had. He hated that look the MOST. It made him feel all ugly inside.
[Thanks for the bump]
Now what was that idiot doing? The large dark mackeral tabby was cleaning her face while her pupils narrowed into thin slits, glowering at the mud covered brat. She understood ShadowClan's affinity with mud to a point, but Houndpaw took it to an entirely different level. She wasn't sure if it was the filth he was fond of or the digging. Regardless, it made bathing him one of her least favorite tasks.
Yelling at him now would get her nowhere since she wasn't in the mood to drag him to the nearest water source, knowing he'd get himself dirty again five seconds later. She'd dragged him out for a bath later, preferably when it was time to sleep, hopefully avoiding mud being tracked into the apprentice den. Sighing exasperatingly, the leader shut her eyes and swiped a huge paw over her face, returning to her grooming.
Yet, it seemed that she couldn't even find peace in that. Her hackle rose, and muscles went stiff as that sixth sense flare. The loud purring relaxed her just a tad as she slightly turned her head to peer at the mudball stalking her. Houndpaw and Weepingpaw were known for their love of pouncing on her or scaling her like she was a tree. It was annoying and often had maternal instincts warring with her survival instincts. Even after all the moons dealing with her kittens' nonsense, she still hasn't quite gotten the hang of not overreacting when it came to their tomfoolery.
As he springs, she neatly leaps out of the way, whiskered brow raised as he bounces back onto his paws. "Nuisance," She greets her son with her lips twitching in the beginnings of a snarl. Before she could go into another lecture about not getting her dirty, he randomly pestered her about battle training and fighting like her. As much as she wanted to tell him to bug his other mother, Dawnstar supposed teaching him some basics wouldn't hurt.
"Fine, but only because you asked nicely." The clan leader led them towards the back of the camp, near her den, and beckoned for the muddy brat to follow her. "We'll work on some basics. Where are the best places to strike your opponent to win a fight?"

Yeah dripping it into some moss made a lot more sense then just pouring some of the mash into an eye now that he thought about it. Though he was kind of curious how much chervil could actually do for the eye. Having never been in a fire or a dust storm or the like the tom was almost completely unaware of the damage those events could do and so only really knew about combat eye injuries. And when you took a claw to the eye even glancingly you were probably loosing some vision even in best case... So what would chervil do? He'd mull on it later, deeming it not good enough to ask.
The taste issue though.... Bleedingpaw shuddered at the idea of tasting all those awful herbs as a job. Nope not him and he'd thank Rookfire to sweeten any of the horrible stuff he had to eat in the future as well. Cats were just not meant to eat plants, though that idea might change if he ever had an encounter with catmint.
"Well as soon as its in season Ill be sure to bring you some chervil if I find it. It sounds like a wonder herb with all it can do.
Is borage like that? Does it have multiple uses too or is it just for one thing with poppy seeds and pain."
"though, there are herbs more useful for eye injuries n chervil alone didnt manage to save my vision" he admitted with a shrug, disrupting the silence. bleedingpaw was probably just thinking about what he heard, but a part of rookfire would never enjoy silence stretching thin between whomever he was talking to and himself.
bleedingpaw was a good kid, very forthcoming, it made him smile. not much, just a small quirk of his maw when the younger tom offered to search for chervil for him. rookfire hummed accordingly, "youre right" his more specific personal past with chervil went unsaid. what use would it be to admit the lives chervil had saved by his paws if they were minnows?
"ah that depends how you classify your herbs i suppose. borage has more uses than poppy seeds, but it overlaps with chervil as well... we'll get to that in a moment anyway." the medic shuffled his paws, tail wrapping around his body tightly. "borage is 'nother herb that tastes bad but at least the scent is mostly pleasant. 's got dark green leaves covered in tiny white hairs, blue or purple flowers and grows in moist soil.. ive been told the best leaves grow halfway up the stem but any will do."
now to the minor overlap, "like chervil, it can help sooth stomachaches, unlike chervil its exclusively consumed, theres no use in it outside of your body. otherwise, it can help with milk production n bring down fevers, making it useful for the early stages of sickness, before youre able to diagnose it and adapt treatment accordingly"

It was funny, for all it was evident by the sight of his eye until now Bleedingpaw forgot the older tom was almost of completely (it was hard to tell) half blind. He coped and acted so well it was hard to tell he had the disability at all. "You had to treat your own eye? That sounds like a tough task, that it did as well as it did even if chervil wasnt enough is a testament to skill in my eyes." For all he didnt really understand or was affected by pain he'd seen how it could shake the paws, alter the actions. Healing oneself was a skill of itself besides healing.
In the healing and herbs itself... Rookfire brought an interesting point. Even if chervil had more uses poppyseeds one was rather critical and it was probably more potent... For a moment Bleedingpaw wondered at how herbs healed at all, what determined them just a plant verses something with use before discarding it as 'not his wheelhouse'.
No he was, for now, too busy looking disturbed at the idea of leaves with fur, eyes bugging a tad and visibly looking baffled (and slightly weirded out) at the concept. Then additionally more baffled at the rather contrary uses of borage. "Im sorry milk and fevers??? I can understand chervil having multiple uses as it just seems to be that type of herb and maybe borage treating multiple aspects of illness with milk? Thats very..... odd." For one horrifying moment Bleedingpaw wondered if it could cause toms to- no no surely not. Only mollies could nurse young, though the golden bengal pitied the poor she cats who came in for illness and had to deal with those side effects.
"Does that... happen with some herbs? The same herb having radically different effects?"

rookfire chuckled at bleedingpaws question, there was no way he couldnt known, even if he had been born earlier. the other clans had known of riverclans bad leadership situation but kept their overall instability mostly lowkey as to avoid unwanted attention. thats what rook thought at least, he, no matter the role he served, had never gotten wind of most of the higher ups choices and ideas. "'m mostly glad i still have the eyeball. but yeah, ah when i was around your age, riverclans only leftover medicine cat apprentice and leader went missing at the same time. someone had to step up, so i did, then thunderclan raided riverclan camp..hmm that mustve been when i was around thirteen or fourteen moons. i killed some apprentice n their mentor flipped out-" the medic shrugged non commitedly, as if it were a common occourance. looking back, he did wish the scar had a more dramatic backstory not just 'barely trained minkpaw kills some cat, gets rattled around and knocked out'.
"herbs were low, new leaf barely 'round the corner so i had to improvise" to be frank, most of the skills he learned around that time were still vivid in his memory, yet overshadowed by the disturbing discovery of life growing inside goldfish. it still made him shudder, kits. they were fine once born, anything before that rook would prefer to keep off his mind. oh that was also around the time he first met mossfreckle, stars its been a long time.
he had never really considered the .. odd .. combination of uses borage offered, but bleedingpaw had a point. aiding in both milk and fevers was kind of weird. "i recon it strengthens the body enough to bring down a fever and stimulates it as to aid in milk production when given to a overwise healthy cat" rookfire replied after a moment and took the change to make an attempt in calming bleedingpaws obvious shock. "milk production only really occours without previous kitting or adoption in really rare cases n wouldnt happen if the body is working through illness"
head cocked to the side, rookfire considered the bengals question. herbs with radically different effects.. "besides radically different effects in the way of unpleasant symptoms due to overconsumption, which should be of concern when administering a herb you are less.. comfortable using, most herbs usually stick to the same general area of healing. like chervil can treat multiple kinds of injuries and consumed for nausea caused by different things, a lot of other herbs can help for a wider range of similar, often paired symptoms at once." another brief paused, the medic gathered his thoughts.
"however, i recon juniper berries should fall into the same category as borage.. they provide strength, n thereby help with belly aches and breathing, probably cuz the body has more energy to process whatever is causing these issues. but can also be eaten to replace lavender in calming cats or be mixed with ragwort to treat aching joints. thats pretty different aye?" rook smiled.

Irispaw was minding his own business, when...
Hawkpaw.
His ear twitches at the other apprentice's words, listening idly. "My trainings fine." They answered "Squirrelrise is good."
A good mentor, at least from what he can tell.
Is this all Hawkpaw wants to ask?
Irispaw glances at him.
Hawkpaw gave Irispaw a cheeky grin before happily yapping on. "What have you recently learned? My mentor was gonna plan on giving me Territory tours. At least, that's what I'm supposed to learn first. But I can't wait till I start my battle training! I'd probably be better than you." He smiled, closing his eyes and proudly lifting his shoulders. His plan was to get a reaction out of Irispaw. He didn't think he was actually any better than they were.
