Nightpaw had wandered off a bit, believing he'd have a better chance of catching something if he was a bit farther away. Besides, if he caught something, it didn’t really matter how, right?
He sniffed the air. At first, nothing. And he was shaking like a leaf from the cold. It was at times like this he wished he had long fur.
"Ugh, I better just get this over with quickly…" He grumbled to himself. The sooner he caught enough to bring back, the sooner he could get out of the cold. Winter was an absolutely horrible season for him, not only was it cold, but it was dark too. The days were shorter, and that meant he'd have to face his worst fear more often….
Shaking his head to get rid of the thought, Nightpaw sniffed the air again, this time paying much closer attention to his surroundings, and….yes! Something! Finally! The scent of a mouse caught his attention, but he momentarily hesitated. Wait, how do you catch a mouse again? He vaguely remembered hearing something about…vibrations was it? Well it made sense, given how tiny mice were, sure they must be able to sense a cat approaching. He slowly moved forward, putting all of his weight to his haunches so that his paws would barely impact the ground at all. Then he darted forward, and brought his claws down on the tiny creature. Yes! He did it! He killed it quickly with a bite to the neck, then scraped some dirt over it to hide it.
Okay, what now…? He sniffed the air again, but there was nothing. Nightpaw looked around, studying his surroundings so he knew where to find his mouse. He scratched an X mark over where he buried the mouse, just to make sure he could find it again. Then he went even further out. A pile of sticks caught his eye…was that something sheltering underneath? He slowly moved towards it, his gaze never leaving the sticks. Yes…it looked like…a frog was that? Oh! He’d caught one of those before! Nightpaw decided to approach it from the side, hoping the frog wouldn’t see him as easily. As he got closer, he found a small rock and picked it up in his mouth. If he could cause a distraction, he might be able to force the frog out of its hiding place. He threw the rock towards the pile of sticks, it fell through the gaps and eventually he could hear it hit the ground. At that moment, the frog leaped out of its hiding spot, and Nightpaw sprang towards it, swatting it with his paw before sinking his claws into it. Not giving it the chance to leap out of his claws, he quickly bit it in the neck. Okay, now he had two. Nightpaw repeated his process of burying his prey and marking it with an X, before halting and sniffing the air one more time.
Again, nothing. But the faint rustling sound caught his attention, and soon his gaze fell upon it. A vole! Perfect! It darted out, and Nightpaw sprang after it. He wasn’t expecting it to move so quickly, how did a little creature this size have so much energy?! He caught up with it eventually, but his initial attempt to swipe it with his claws missed, and he fell to the ground. Quickly getting back up, he chased it even further before finally pouncing, and feeling the vole in his claws. He bit down on its neck, satisfied that he’d finally got it. Okay, it was starting to get dark. Nightpaw realised with a jolt of fear that it was going to get dark very quickly, and…anything could happen in the dark! Just then, he caught the scent of his patrol again. A little bit behind, he quickly scrambled to dig up his prey that he’d buried before running back to camp.
