As Midnightpath turned towards Bleedingpaw, Pondpaw fixed her attention on Hillstrider, blue eyes narrowing against the wind.
Opening her jaws to taste the air, the apprentice caught the scent of rabbit at once. Her pawsteps silent and her scent blending in with her surroundings, Pondpaw darted through the undergrowth. There was a squeal of terror, though it was cut off abruptly. The blue-gray mackerel tabby a heartbeat later appeared at Hillstrider´s side with the rabbit in between her jaws, blue eyes gleaming as she looked at him.
Ironic Pondpaw was worried over warrior being gentle with Bleedingpaw when he himself was among Dawnstars adoptive family and so oft held to her exacting standards and the two warriors he trained with frequently pushed him to the point of exhaustion on the daily. Though in their defense that was partially because Bleedingpaw refused to go back until he had to be borderline carried and collapsed as soon as he was back in camp. Brairsplash and Hawkbite were kind, not gentle, so maybe Pondpaw so new to shadowclans ways needed that more.
Who knows though, Bleedingpaw was already off slipping into the bushes with a "Ill stay close!" falling into his weird hunting crouch and wiggling through and under roots.
With his stealth (odd as it was) it took Bleedingpaw no time at all to find his first mark, nearly stepping on the mouse that didnt clock his weird movements as a cat stalking and so didnt run. Its mistake, and the rodent was quickly flopped on until Bleedingpaw could move his wobbling head to bite it.
The thrush gave more issue. It was right there, perfectly in reach on a nearby low branch but in the open so harder to get to.... Ok distraction time. Making sure he was downwind and hidden Bleedingpaw nabbed a pinecone (admittedly grabbing it took a couple of tries with his poor paw eye coordination) before rolling it away from him. It hit a tree with a thump and, not even waiting a second the tom burst from the bush as the thrush's head turned before it had a chance to be startled. The catch was..... messy, unable to aim the bengal kinda wrestled the bird down and broke its neck with his paws instead but it was prey.
Two catches down already! Now just a little breather and check in with Midnightpath before he continued.

Briarsplash fluffed out her pelt a bit as she watched the young apprentice take in the new section of the territory, obviously brighter than the other shadowy parts he'd already seen, and staring in awe at the trees. Her whiskers almost twitched in amusement at the sight... almost.
She let out a 'hmph' and a nod of acknowledgement as Palepaw stated the prey he smelled; good. He at least had a decent nose on him. Briarsplash flicked her tail towards the nearest scent, where she could see a sparrow not too far away pecking at a bush, perhaps looking for berries. To the side of them was a lizard scuttling among some stones, and the rustle in some undergrowth indicated the direction of where the mouse was.
"You're exactly right. Good nose... that's the first part of hunting. Now, the next part is deciding which prey, and how you're going to do it..." She narrowed her eyes, assessing the prey he'd listed.
The bird was perhaps the closest, but those creatures were flittery; one step too hard and they'd be in the sky in a moment. And trying to get close enough to the bush without rustling it would be a challenge. Lizards were fun to catch, and this one was in the open and exposed on the stones, but they were very quick on their feet and hard to get a good grip on. And mice... their senses were very sharp and attuned, besides being a little hard to spot and grab with how small and quick they were. Any way, it'd be a challenge... she decided to give him the choice. Her gaze flicked back to Palepaw, looking both challenging and yet intrigued to see what he'd do.
"Hmmm... your choice," she mewed in her raspier tone, eyes glinting in the afternoon light. "Let's see how good your instincts are. But I will give you this first: mice will often sense and hear you before anything else. Lizards, more so feeling and smelling you. And birds... it can vary, but mostly seeing you. Although with any of them, one misstep can cost you the catch — which isn't as bad in early leaf-fall here, but in leaf-bare... each catch counts. You'd do well to put that into practice from the start."
She sat back on her haunches, curling her plumed tail over her paws, waiting to see what he'd do by instinct... then she could correct later.

Palepaw ◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [34/100]
Which one? Which one should he choose? This was his first time hunting and he really didn't have a clue on what to pick or how to go about it. The closest thing he had to catching something was when he played leaf catcher in the clearing with Thrushkit. Though that was the furthest thing from an actual prey.
'Well...leaves float around and comes from the sky. So...maybe I should go for the bird?' Palepaw paused, unsure, before glancing back at Briarsplash. 'Oh...oh!' It looks like Briarsplash is letting him try it out first. The little calico kitten dropped into a crouch, a not very good one, before trying to move forward silently. Perhaps thanks to his short legs, he managed to stay somehow balanced as he creeped towards the bush.
A little by little, he crept up slowly towards the bird. While nearing the bush, he accidentally stepped on something that made quite a racket. The sparrow was spooked and alarmed, but didn't fly. And this caused the pale little furball to hold his breath, frightened that he might scare it away. Okay...all he had to do was jump, right? 'Same as the leaf, same as the leaf. Jump to where you think the leaf will go. But where will the leaf go? This wasn't a leaf, it was a bird!'
[ Rolled a 11 ]
Barely...
Palepaw paused and right before his pounce, the bird started to fly. His claws barely latched onto the bird, it dangled a little but fumbled its way through. 'Augh!' He looked up at the flapping bird in distress. He almost had it, just barely. But barely didn't cut it and the sparrow had managed to escape.

Briarsplash watched silently from a distance, just a tad impressed. Well, almost. The 'paw had a little more instincts than she'd anticipated; either that, or the bird was just completely oblivious to the pale-coated creature slinking somewhat unceremoniously through the grass. He actually managed to snag it, but the sparrow was already gone, flapping rapidly through the air with a terrified squawk.
The Enforcer padded over, letting out a huff as she considered his form. "...You got alright instincts, kid. But your movements were too hasty, a bit sloppy. Of course, you haven't learned yet so to be expected — but ya did better than I thought, really," she grunted, a bit bluntly (but almost an indirect compliment of sorts. Hard to tell with her).
She instructed him to drop back into his hunting crouch, slowly circling his form with narrowed eyes. Using her fluffy tail, she tapped on his shoulders and haunches as she spoke, instructing him. "Drop low, putting all your weight in your haunches. It'll make your steps lighter. You wanna work on being able to glide across the ground almost soundlessly — like a shadow."
Briar stepped back to demonstrate; she dropped herself low, her fluffy belly just barely brushing the forest floor. Despite her stocky size, she managed pretty well, almost gliding across the grass with light steps with practiced ease. She wasn't the greatest hunter when compared with her battle skills (grace and stealth was never her forte), but she wasn't half-bad either. Especially after rigorously training to prove herself once she'd joined the Clan young.
The Enforcer then sat up, turning to face Palepaw. "Let me see you try that out. Oh, and next time you snag your claws on a bird... best thing to do is immediately slam it down to the ground to stun it, then go for the kill," she added with a slight smirk on her maw, one of her sharp teeth poking out. "Y'can't give 'em a chance to fly away."

He missed it. He missed it so badly. He only barely touched the feathers before the bird had flew away. Disappointment overwhelmed him a little, but Palepaw still nodded along, trying his best to focus on Briarsplash's words. 'Focus, focus, focus!' He'd told himself.
The pale calico did light up a bit after hearing the older warrior's words. Next time! That's right, he still have next time to fix his mistake. He made a small note in his mind to slam the bird down. "Alrighty!"
He watched as Briarsplash dropped into a crouch. 'Augh, he was definitely doing it wrong.' So this was the time to fix it! Palepaw cleared his mind and directed his focus onto learning. He dropped into the crouch and tried his best to copy what Briarsplash was doing. Lower, lower, lower. His pale eyes lit up in excitement as he watched the Enforcer just glide across so smoothly and silently. But when Palepaw tried, he wobbled.
Something was clearly wrong. What was it? Definitely not enough balance but how could he fix it?

"Not too low..."
Briarsplash snorted a bit as she padded back over to the young apprentice, ushering him to raise up and stop putting his rear in the air. "You're gonna throw yourself off balance if you're dragging along the floor. Makes you walk awkwardly. And loosen up a bit... you wanna be firm, but being too tight will make you walk stiff and make that much more noise."
The Enforcer demonstrated the hunter's crouch again so he could see, flicking her tail to show how low and loose she was while still being controlled. She put her paw here and her tail there, trying to ease his form into the proper technique.
"It takes practice... so I wanna see ya doing it a lot," she rasped, giving him a firm nod. "Practice all the time, even when you're not training. Then you'll do it without even thinking."
That's what had done it for her; hours of practice, desperate to prove herself... not that she'd exactly advise the staying-up-late aspect of it that made her lose some sleep, but definitely encouraging the aspiring tom to make it his goal to get it down. That's how real and good warriors were made. That's how an outsider like her could become an Enforcer; the thought made her heart burn with a mixture of pride and determination.
"Once you got it..." She pointed her muzzle over to the lizard, curling her lip a bit in anticipation; it was still sunning on the rocks they'd seen earlier, nearby enough to be seen but not close enough to want to run away from the hunters yet. "I wanna see you use it on that lizard. Careful... they're slippery and get startled by the slightest sound. Remember, silent... like a shadow."

Palepaw ◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [38/100]
He watched the Enforcer demonstrate it again. The little one definitely had trouble learning, but one of these days, he'll get it. Hopefully. This time he tried to follow along with the diluted gray tortie, copying and mimicking every step.
Ah! Not too low! He lifted himself up a little, enough for his fur to slightly brush the ground but not resting his whole weight on the forest floor. 'And loosen up!' Palepaw did a little shake to relax and tail out for balance. 'Am I doing it? I think...I think I am!' He shot Briarsplash a bright look, eyes full of sparkles. 'Heyheyhey! I did it!' was what he wanted to say, but remained in a soft hushed tone, careful not to scare away the prey. "I'm doing it, right?"
It was somewhat successful, not really, but it was much better than before. Palepaw could balance a little better, but still seem to have a little trouble moving the way Briarsplash is. One day, he'll be like the shadows too; and to do that, he'll need a whole lot of practice.
The pale calico nodded softly at Briarsplash's suggestion. There was a lizard nearby, the perfect test to see if he'd learned. His pale eyes narrowed, and he dropped in the crouch he just practiced. Slowly. Swiftly. Or at least, as much as he can, Palepaw had crept forward. Avoiding all the forest floras, careful to not step on sticks nor anything that could spook the prey.

Three....two...one! He jumped and launched onto the lizard. The lizard was wiggling in his claws! His eyes lit up with excitement. 'No way! I caught something!' The pale calico kitten wanted to jump around in joy and celebration, but first, he needed to kill it. Just as he's about to bite into the lizard, he found it missing leaving only a wiggling tail. Excitement drained from his face and despair replaced it. It was an understatement to say he was just disappointed, he was absolutely devastated and confused. "Wait! Wh- What? It was right here!"

Briarsplash let out a long sigh, shaking her head. Palepaw had been close; so close to the point where his miss was almost frustrating to her, on his behalf. She fluffed out her pelt and padded over, giving a grunt and wrinkling her nose at the wriggly tail left behind.
"Huh, yeah... I guess some lizards can do that. Sorta forgot about that," she huffed, pawing it for a moment with a shudder. Ew. The Enforcer glanced down at the despairing apprentice, letting out another gusty sigh. "Look, ya almost had it... just gotta be quicker goin' for the kill. Or you can stun it. And maybe your jump was a little poorly timed. But, uh... guess it's hard to add too much onto that when the darn critter can shed its tail as a last resort," she grunted, something like flat but dark humor in her tone.
Keeping down her annoyance down (her annoyance being less about Palepaw himself since this was his first session, and more about the circumstances), Briarsplash took in a deep breath and tasted the air again. Okay, their training had caused a bit of a ruckus and caused a lot of the prey to scamper off. But she was determined to at least try one more time to get him his first catch... she didn't want to bring an apprentice (especially one that wasn't hers!) back to camp empty-pawed. It would make her look like she didn't properly train him at all, wouldn't it?
And then... a whiff of a mouse. Perhaps that same mouse from earlier? Smirking a bit, the warrior motioned silently with her plumed tail, a silent signal to show where it was at. She leaned forward and quietly murmured, "Okay, look... I'm gonna scare the thing so it runs straight into your claws. You just gotta react quick enough to catch it. So maybe we'll at least get you somethin' to take home. C'mon... 'n don't let it get away," she added with a warning edge to her tone — not too seriously of a warning, but enough to let the apprentice know that she expected (or at least wanted) results.
Making a wide loop around, Briarsplash positioned herself just behind the bush that the mouse was scurrying in. She waited, looking at Palepaw to make sure he was alert and ready; once he was, she suddenly lashed out her paw, striking a branch of the bush and making the entire thing shake.
The mouse squeaked and darted out with wide, round eyes; in its mad dash of panic, it was careening straight towards the awaiting Palepaw. All he had to do... was not mess up.

Palepaw ◆ ShadowClan | 6 moons | [42/100]
Devasted as he was, it seemed like Briarsplash still have some hope in him. Maybe not hope, but rather, the same frustration he was feeling. The boiling mix of confusion asking the star why couldn't he have gotten that. For it to escape so suddenly was outside Palepaw's most wild imagination and his imagination usually goes beyond him. Do cat's tail fall off too? Was that why his tail looks a little shorter? Between utter confusion and wanting success, Palepaw dropped into the crouch once more. He needed to get this right. Well.. it was not a need, more of a want. He didn't want to disappoint the Enforcer any further.
It's alright, it just means I need more practice. And practice was the Palepaw's second most favourite thing after learning. No...it would be the third. Second will always be climbing random things. His paws tread the forest floors silently. Once again, he was careful not to spook the mouse in front of him. He got this! With his mind refreshed and bright eyes focused on the mouse, he was ready.
This time, Briarsplash chased the mouse towards him and it was a weird feeling. Never would he have imagined seeing the mouse run straight at him.

Success!
The mouse suddenly did a swerve and dodged Palepaw's first swipe. Of course. Did he expect the mouse to cozy up to him and run straight into his mouth? No of course, not!...actually...yeah, he kind of did by the way the mouse was originally running. Luckily this time he acted a little faster. The diluted calico swiped the mouse up into the air before biting down on it. 'I did it!' More like, they did it! His eyes were bright as padded up to Briarsplash, though he won't celebrate it too much. Afterall, he's yet to fully catch one by himself.

As the group split up, Hillstrider let Pondpaw go off nearby to hunt, the tom scenting the air to find something to catch himself. The woodsy scent of mice caught his attention, and the warrior dropped to a low position to streak his way through the undergrowth. As the scent got stronger, Hillstrider slowed, ears swiveling towards the light scuffling in the undergrowth. In the distance, his sensitive ears picked up a short squeal that was abruptly cut off. Oh, someone must have caught something! Great! Focusing back on his prey, Hillstrider stalked forward until he saw the short grass move, the small brown forms of two mice skittering around each other as they foraged for food. With a great bound, Hillstrider shot forward and slammed his front paws onto the mice, killing them before they could utter a squeak. Straightening, Hillstrider grinned proudly at his catches. Alright! Looks like it was time to keep going!
[Hillstrider caught +2 mice!]
Burying the mice under some leaves, Hillstrider cast his senses out into the forest once more, picking up on the trail of lizard nearby almost immediately. He didn't wait to consider that maybe a lizard wouldn't be the best use of his time, the tom trilling with excitement at the possibility of catching something so quick. Large paws trotted over slippery ground towards a big rock, where a red lizard sat sunning itself on the weak sunlight. Hillstrider locked eyes with the lizard, blinking owlishly at it while it licked its eyes in a similar manner. Then the chase was on. The lizard shot away, Hillstrider a half-heartbeat after, one red and one orange as they streaked towards a crack in the stone where the lizard could escape. But Hillstrider was too fast.
Very much too fast. With a resounding CRASH! Hillstrider slammed his face into the rock at the same moment the lizard was caught by his claws, dying swiftly and plopping to the ground unceremoniously. Hillstrider groaned, limp on the ground by the rock, face smarting painfully. "Ough..." His vision swam with pain, a warm liquid dribbling down his face. "Yeowch."
[Hillstrider caught +1 lizard!]
Out of the corner of his eye, Hillstrider caught a glimpse of something slithering away into the undergrowth. What the... was that his lizard? No, his lizard was right in front of him! He frowned, but the motion made his face light up in pain again. He hissed, reaching down to grab the lizard (which also caused him pain) to return back to the others. Man, he musta hit his face real hard!
Picking up the mice was difficult too, but eventually the pain turned into a dull throb.
[If someone wants to point out to the idiot that his nose is bleeding, he probably won't notice himself]
