Of course, Vervainpaw had no trouble asking Freezingfury to accompany them. Part of her had hoped that it would be postponed or perhaps she would have a warrior teach her, but no. Spiderpaw had agreed to this, as much as Vervainpaw overwhelmed her with her antics. She liked teaching, so maybe there wouldn't be a big issue. Maybe the other apprentice was just too excited earlier.
The real question was... How did she get roped into actually teaching a lesson? Spiderpaw had planned to maybe give some tips and help him out. She didn't feel all that qualified to teach another apprentice anything, even if most of her training was done. She was no named warrior; still nothing more than another 'paw. Did she enjoy teaching and helping? Yes, of course she did. She wouldn't have offered if she didn't.
She had to give Vervainpaw the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he wasn't as judgmental as the tabby had thought. It was nice to get out into the territory. The smells of the forest grounded her. She was even able to see some goldenrod, which Berryshine had taught her a little bit about. Maybe, if she remembered, she could bring some back for the medicine cat. She wasn't really sure what herbs the clan needed, but having extra wouldn't hurt, would it?
Spiderpaw paused at the edge of the river, seeking out a shady spot. A nearby willow would suit her needs. "O-okay... so, f-fish can feel the temperature change from y-your shadow... so... it's easier to... fish in the shade." She explained as she stopped under the tree, remembering the explanation that Eaglewing had given her during that fishing event. She glanced at Freezingfury, feeling awkward about training an apprentice when the warrior was present. It felt kind of silly. "Th-they aren't expecting a-as much... when you're already in the shade..." She told Vervainpaw.

Vervainpaw was very excited. She was going to learn fishing! So, as per her usual personality, the apprentice talked. The. Entire. Way. There.
It wasn't even useful talking! Just gossip, memories, thoughts, and basically almost everything that came through his head at any given time. Spider didn't even have to respnd to any of it- Which was good, because she wouldn't get a word in edgewise.
The red and cream she padded along, quieting right down when they reached the river. Ducking into the shade of the willow tree, Vervainpaw shot a grin to Freezingfury, like a silent thanks for supervising so they could go out, and sat down next to Spiderpaw. All his impressive concentration was now laser-focused on the water, and Spiderpaw's words.
She nodded along, paying close attention. She repeated it back to Spider, to show he understod, then waited for further instructions. It was very hard for her to control the impulse to just try it out already.

Well, it seemed like Freezingfury was busying himself with... something. Spiderpaw felt a little relieved that Vervainpaw had stopped talking long enough for her to teach. It seemed that the other apprentice was paying attention. The grey tabby felt her shoulders relax a little bit as he nodded along with her lesson. Okay, maybe this wasn't so bad. She still doubted her place in teaching Vervainpaw anything, but hopefully it counted enough. At the very least, she'd be able to fish in an assessment if that was what was expected of her.
It occurred to her that Spiderpaw could probably take her assessment if she wanted to soon...
Anyway, back to teaching.
"Fish can't really see is very well, but they can make out some movement above them," Spiderpaw continued, "So, when you're fishing... you gotta stay really still and really quiet... and wait for them to come to you, then you gotta move really quick. Hook their scales with your claws and just... scoop towards yourself." The blue-grey apprentice wondered if she had forgotten anything. Hopefully she got it all right. She did love hunting, and tried to remember as many details of her training as she possibly could.
But, with her explanation complete, Spiderpaw decided to give a presentation. She really hoped she wouldn't miss the fish, especially after Vervainpaw's comment about how Riverclan cats should all know how to fish. She felt her heart quicken, but tried to stay as still as possible as she leaned over the water with one paw raised up into the air over the edge of the river. She wondered if Vervainpaw would even watch, or if the other apprentice would just go for it.
After a few heartbeats, Spiderpaw honed in. She narrowed her eyes and watched the flowing water calmly. Her tail tip stopped twitching. Her ears perked towards the water despite not possibly being able to hear the fish swimming. There was a decent fish coming ever closer and closer...
Her paw darted into the water as the fish made its way too close to where it hung still over the water. Claws hooked their way under the scales and she scooped. The thrashing fish sent water everywhere before it was stilled by a killing bite.
Spiderpaw licked her lips and looked up at Vervainpaw. "Like that..." She mewed quietly.

Vervainpaw tried her best to quiet, fidgeting and twitching, though her eyes never left Spiderpaw. "Quiet, still, scoop. Got it." The red and cream tabby mix was still moving around, finding it hard to stay still, when the blue/grey tabby next to her caught the fish. "Wow, well done Spiderpaw! That was cool!" She meowed, eyes lighting up. Twitching his tail one last time, Vervain went still. Stiller than before, eerily so. "Quiet, still, scoop, kill." The apprentice said, mimicking Spider's voice perfectly.
Then he shot his paw into the water moments afterwards, hooking out a fish... But dropping it afterwards. Darn. Much to her frustration, she missed the next one. But then, he went even more still than before. Like a snake about to strike, it was unsettling. Eerie, for an apprentice that never sat still. After a few minutes of this, the tabby mix striked. Her red paw flew into the water in a flash, and pulled out a fish, which he bit into firmly at the neck. Then, proud, Vervainpaw dropped it at Spiderpaw's paws, grey eyes glinting. "Good?"

As Vervainpaw repeated her instructions, albeit simplified, she felt a bit more confidence in teaching. It seemed like the message was getting across to the other apprentice fairly well. The lightest, almost imperceptible purr escaped to acknowledge his praise on her catch. She stepped back to drop the fish and turned back in time to watch him go dead still.
Then her fur bristled.
She hadn't spoken. Spiderpaw did not say that... but that was her voice! Alarmed, Spiderpaw took a step back as Vervainpaw's shot into the water. She swallowed hard as her heart raced and her tail tip twitched back and forth. What kind of... How... The idea that someone could so perfectly mimic her voice... that they could say anything and pass it off identically, from voice to tone, had so many horrible implications. What if Vervainpaw insulted someone with her voice?
The young apprentice shook her head as the other apprentice missed her second fish. She forced her fur the lay flat and took a deep breath to steady her nerves. It was certainly disturbing the hear her own voice used by someone else... It made her anxious to think of what a cat could get away with by simply using another's voice in a crowd. If the other apprentice decided she really didn't like Spiderpaw... well, he could ruin her by just saying something terrible at a meeting. Would Owlstar believe her if she told her that it wasn't her that said whatever it might be?
Another deep breath and the blue-grey tabby shook out her pelt. Spiderpaw tried to shove those thoughts back and keep them far from the surface. That might not even happen! It wouldn't actually happen... right? She didn't know Vervainpaw all that well, but he wasn't vindictive or anything... right?
So, the pressure was on.
"Good catch...!" Spiderpaw mewed, pushing a light purr into her praise as Vervainpaw dropped the fish at her paws. "W-wanna try again?" The young tabby asked as she approached the water again. She liked fishing. A lot, even if it involved the water she had grown to dread being so close to. Her tail swayed lightly behind her as she watched a couple more fish float by. Maybe they could catch just a couple more... And maybe that would make Vervainpaw not hate her? Or would he instead dislike continuing? The ability to mimic her voice brought her anxiety from worrying about being judged by others... to worrying about being judged by others for things she didn't do.
[ @Dreamingstars
since Star hasn't replied, it's basically like Freezing kinda left them high and dry / never actually left camp with them until Star actually replies. @_@ That's kind of why I wanted to wait for Star to reply before we continued past the first posts. We can't continue and powerplay Freezingfury as being present... So, my next post will note his lack of presence... ]

Freezingfury wasn't quite sure why he let himself babysit two apprentices, but oh well... They seemed to be doing a pretty decent job alone, and he definitely didn't feel like teaching them how to fish. Ahem. Totally not because he absolutely sucked at it. Spiderpaw seemed better at fishing than himself, so he wouldn't quite comment on anything.
"Having fun, you two?" He asked the apprentices with a small smile, a certain warmth in his icy blue gaze. "I can rope in a treetop hunting or land hunting lesson if you lot are down for it."

Vervainpaw nodded happily at Freezingfury's question, twitching his tail. "Yeah, maybe after Fishing!" At Spiderpaw's question, the red and cream apprentice nodded, ignoring the discomfort emanating from the tabby. She turned her grey eyes to the water. After a moment, he struck, only to come back enpty-pawed. With a grin, Vervain tried again, and hooked a fish. It was dead once he delivered the final blow. "Yay, caught another one!"

Spiderpaw's ears perked as Freezingfury offered more training. She was never one against more training. "That would be nice..." She mewed, though quietly as her eyes scanned the water. Vervainpaw practiced and Spiderpaw watched carefully this time. She wanted to ignore the strangeness of her voice coming out of Vervainpaw's maw. It was also nice that the other apprentice was no longer talking her ear off.
She watched Vervainpaw swing and miss, then get another one. "Good job... Water is... funny... because it changes... where it looks like things are." She hoped that made sense. It seemed like the other apprentice was getting the hang of it. Spiderpaw personally disliked how strange water was when looking through it. A fish could look huge, but actually be small. It could look directly under your paw, yet actually be further away. It was something she was still getting used to, since this was only the second time she had actually gone fishing.
With three fish now caught, she was feeling pretty happy with how well Vervainpaw was doing. Maybe she could make this teaching thing work, after all. She looked back at Freezingfury. "I... don't know how to climb... but, a treetop hunting lesson sounds... really good."

Vervainpaw was half listening to Spiderpaw as he inspected the fish she had caught, tail twitching. "Yeah, yeah, water is funny.." The apprentice didn't seem to notice how she switched into Spider's voice halfway through her sentence. At the next words spoken, the cream and red tabby mix looked up, grey eyes sparkling. "OOH, yes! WHat Spidey said! Treetop hunting sounds fun- Then I can jump onto peoples heads and sneak up in the air and escape predators and-" AAAaannddd Vervainpaw went on a tangent again. Best to tune her out.
