The tom let Emberpaw barrel into him and unbalance him. [rolled a 14] Once he was on his back, before Emberpaw could even react, he flashed to his paws and swung a hefy paw at the apprentices legs, hoping to sweep them out from under them and smack them onto their muzzle in the leaf litter and dirt.

Emberpaw hadn't expected their shoulder to connect with their mentor's flank, and his brief stumble left them surprised and vulnerable to a counterattack. Emberpaw's legs slipped out from under them as Tuftedtusk attacked, but instinct kicked in and they rolled away before their mentor could slam their face down. They darted a cat-length or two away, shaking the dirt from their pelt. Alright, so brute force hadn't worked. What were they supposed to try now?? There was very little instruction going on!

But Emberpaw had always been a doer, anyway. The apprentice shot forward again, this time feinting to the side before aiming a swipe at his face with sheathed claws.

Tuftedtusk saw the feint coming and ducked under his apprentice's hefty paw aimed right for his face. Rolling over and jumping to his paws, he quickly slammed into Emberpaw's side - planning to make him fall onto his flank before he would slash his paws down her side before he had a chance to understand what was going on. Tufted may be hefty, but he was shockingly fast for his size.

Their attack was dodged, and before they could react they were being sent sprawling into the dirt, a heavy paw slashing along her side. Emberpaw, half-panicked, scrambled to her paws and snarled, ears pinned back. What was with this stupid tom?? Force didn't work, speed didn't work--what the hell did he want her to do?

Without hesitation Emberpaw shot to the side, then came around and used her powerful hind legs to leap into the air and slam onto his back, claws barely restrained within her paws.
