Sunflowerpaw woke with a start, rubbing her eyes with a huge, golden forepaw. She yawned, pushing herself into a sitting position and grooming her fur. Today was her assessment. Today was the test that Mountaintalon would be judging and deciding whether or not she was ready to be a warrior. Sunflowerpaw needed to look on point. She needed to impress her mentor.

After finishing her wash, the ThunderClanner emerged from the apprentices' den and downed a small, scrawny mouse left over from last night's hunt before making her way over to Mountaintalon. ''I'm ready whenever you are, Mountaintalon.''

Mothflame looked towards Sunflowerpaw, casting an amused glance towards the golden-furred apprentice. This would be the third apprentice she would assess, and she wanted to make it worth both her and Sunflowerpaw's time. She knew she was a promising warrior, and she was going to make sure it was clear.

"Arlight, darlin'. Let's get a move on." She touched her tail to the apprentice's shoulder before heading right out of camp with nothing more than a flick of her tail.

Once they were at a nice, open place, Mothflame whipped around to face Sunflowerpaw with a serious and confident glint in her golden and blue eye.

"No funny business here. We're here to get what we're here to get done, done. Got it?" Without waiting for a response, she pounced up to a low-hanging branch, looking down at Sunflowerpaw from it. "Catch as many prey as you can until the sun is at its highest... And bring them back to this tree. Here, we will spar and test your combat skills." Her tail swayed. "Now go."

Sunflowerpaw followed Mothflame out of camp, her ears flicking as she listened to the warrior. “No funny business. I promise,” the massive, golden apprentice replied once the warrior was finished speaking.

At Mothflame’s order, the ThunderClanner ducked into the undergrowth, careful not to let her broad shoulders and thick fur catch on the thorns of brambles.

Once she was sure she was far enough away from Mothflame so that the bengal could watch her from afar—without Sunflowerpaw detecting her, either (which was nearly impossible with her sharp eyesight and her unusually strong sense of smell)—Sunflowerpaw slowed to a halt.

Doing as Mountaintalon had instructed her a few moons back, Sunflowerpaw closed her eyes and parted her jaws, letting the overwhelming scents of the forest roll over her tongue. She carefully deciphered one scent from another, squirrel scent from shrew scent, before deciding to go after the shrew first and the squirrel later.

The ThunderClanner ducked into the undergrowth once more, amber eyes narrowing as she slowly stalked the shrew (which was beside its nest, which meant more would be coming out soon). Just as it darted further away from its burrow, another shrew followed it. Sunflowerpaw leaped, one paw landing on one, the other paw landing on the other. The she-cat gave both shrews a quick nip to the spine before burying them to collect later.

Sunflowerpaw followed the squirrel’s scent trail, her ears flattening against her head as she fell into the hunter’s crouch. Making sure that her quarry hadn’t detected her, she leaped, one paw landing on it he squirrel’s fluffy tail while she sank her teeth into its neck for a swift, clean killing bite.

Returning to collect her shrews, the apprentice padded off in the direction of the clearing where she would meet back up with Mothflame.
