Newtbelly was being challenged now?! What was this world coming to? Newt was an awesome warrior and mentor, he didn’t deserve to have his rank questioned by anycat. But he also…had something else on his mind. The cream tom stepped forward at Dawnstar’s last call announcement, forcing himself to meet her gaze. “I would like to make a challenge for the open position.” He stated confidently. Stemstone knew he was a newer warrior, but surely-
“Pfft, all of you’s coming out of the woods now.” Wildstorm stretches from where she had been laying down, watching leisurely. She had been looking forward to watching another enforcer challenge, not kits scrambling for recognition. Eyes narrowed, trained her young, new, and impudent denmate, the long-furred she-cat rose to her paws and stepped forward. “You’ve been a warrior for what? Two moons? What experience could you possibly?” She grunted as she finished her statement, turning her head away sharply as she scoffed.
She could see the defiance in Stemstone’s eyes, but he managed to bite back a retort in front of the leader. Good, he’d learned restraint somewhere down the line. But still, the Enforcers didn’t a welp like him until he’d gained some more experience. Kid had potential, no doubt. But Enforcers were supposed to be proven, not in progress. Having said what she wanted to say, Wildstorm sat down with her tail resting around her paws. Waiting impatiently for things to proceed.
She had often debated challenging an Enforcer for their rank, but never had before. She wasn’t certain what purpose it would serve, other than grant her some accolade to brag about. She could serve her clan just as fiercely from where she sat, as far as she could tell. But…now might be her best chance to test that theory. “A good warrior can and will serve their clan with or without a fancy title.” She grumbled the words towards Stemstone, but she was also watching for Dawnstar’s response. Not for approval of course, that was brown nosing. But to see what Dawnstar’s opinion was of what she said.
Did the leader agree? So far, most of the cats stepping forward fell short of worthiness, and she wasn’t going to boast herself worth either. Wildstorm wasn’t even entirely sure what that meant, just that the Enforcers and other high ranks were…different. Their…air or whatever. Their presence was different. It’s what Wildstorm appreciated about their leadership. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t…interested. But she never felt quite…ready to issue a challenge. Or perhaps that was the wrong word. Ugh, this was frustrating to think about, this is why she preferred action to deeper thinking.
MOSSTANGLE
Shadowclan Warrior | 19 moons | Large, dark brown-and-white tabby she-cat with green eyes
~~~
So much happened in the clearing around Mosstangle as she stood, doing probably the wildest thing she could have imagined. She had challenged Dawnstar for an enforcer rank. Just the idea brought a thrill to her, anxious yet excited. Just a touch of adrenaline was coursing through her veins already.
Rookfire's challenge caught her attention. The new enforcer was gunning for Hawkbite's position? Mosstangle wasn't quite sure how she felt about that. He was a great fighter and did plenty, even if she didn't like him much, but the commander of the enforcers? She imagined he had farther to go in order to be worthy of that position, like learning to keep his "inside thoughts" inside. He had been an enforcer before, but why challenge Hawkbite, now? The tabby didn't imagine that it would look good if Dawnstar refused his challenge. Was it worth the risk?
The warrior didn't really get to finish her thoughts on Rookfire's challenge before Smokefern appeared. Her one-eared friend gave her words of encouragement, further lighting Mosstangle's fire. She trilled in appreciation for her friend before the darker molly slipped away again as one after another continued to challenge Dawnstar, or other enforcers, for their claim at the title of enforcer. Mosstangle couldn't much argue the question of why these cats that all wanted to step up hadn't brought it up before... As she was one of them... but it was strange to her how many others would call out their own challenges.
A familiar, white pelt approached. The tail that flicked her shoulder belonged to none other than Blackjaw. "Thanks." She purred, feeling a bit of the shakiness in her paws dissipate in his presence and helping her focus. She wanted this. Mosstangle knew that she wanted this, and had bounced the thought around in her mind so many times. The support was much appreciated. Perhaps the whole clan didn't know her yet, but they certainly would in time. These few bits of support were a comfort in the long pause while she waited for Dawnstar's verdict.
Sleepysunrise wanted in... But what had happened to her neck? The medicine cat was covered in cobwebs as she approached and proclaimed her interest, Birdecho in tow. How long had she been like that? How did she get so injured? Mosstangle wished she had paid a little more attention, as, surely, she must have missed something. Perhaps there was something new?
Morningpaw. Mosstangle turned her head to her dark apprentice as he spoke. She nodded. "I have, If Dawnstar is willing to spar me to take the open position." She told him, giving the apprentice a quick lick between the ears, amused by his backtracking to fetch his friend who had already started sprinting after him. Were these two ever separated for long?
Her attention pulled right back to Dawnstar as the Shadowclan leader began speaking again. Each cat was subsequently knocked off the list for various reasons. Haven't done enough for the clan. Not enforcer material. This wasn't just a silly sparring event, this was an actual challenge. This was for the betterment of the clan, not just an opportunity to play fight or get some aggression out. Mosstangle wouldn't lie and say she didn't grow more nervous with each denial, nor Rookfire's warning of a loose acceptance of a challange.
Mosstangle's heartbeat was almost too loud in her ears to hear when Dawnstar accepted her challenge. She was deemed good enough to try. Claws dug into the ground, a mix of determination, excitement, pride, and even a touch a dread flashed through her as she bowed her head respectfully to her leader's acceptance. What if she failed?
Morningpaw was sleeping. It was peaceful. Nothing interrupted. Until something did. The tabby sprung up at Wildkit's excited yells, tail whipping. When he spotted the calico he blew out a breath. "You're gonna kill me with these scares, Wild. Ya' stalking is too good." The black and dark brown mottled tom shook himself out, before realizing what the kit said. He skidded closer. "WHAT? MOSSTANGLE?? WHERE!" The apprentice ran out, amber eyes glowing, searching searching for his mentor. Then Morningpaw remembered Wildkit, and quickly, a little embarrassed by his outburst, doubled back and brought the kit over. He jumped at his mentor, though didn't actually touch the she-cat. "Mosstangle! Wildkit told me you were going to challenge for the Enforcer position." The tabby gazed at the patched tabby, eyes wide and curling his tail around a certain calico kit.
Butter fur (ewww...)
Wildkit puffed his chest out in pride as Morningpaw scolded him about sneaking up on his again. He hadn't even tried, this time. It didn't take long for his friend to process what the kit had told him, and soon enough, he was sprinting out of the den to find his mentor!
Wildkit shook out his messy pelt, feeling oddly... heavy, today? His pelt was poorly maintained in the first place, but even he was grossed out by how greasy it felt today. Maybe he did need to bathe more often... Whatever. He raced after Morningpaw, who came back quickly for him. Blackjaw was there already, too! "Hi, Blackjaw. Good luck, Mosstangle!" He purred after the announcement from Dawnstar. This looked difficult. Maybe he would try to fight Dawnstar for an enforcer rank when he grows up!
@Mr_Possessive (Quick little greeting from a greasy little kit)
