Mourning Ruins

Lightstreak peaked into the ruins. She wondered what had happed.

Pondlily dipped her head in greeting to Blackberrybat, glad to see that he had heard her the moment she called his name. Springburst didn't, though, seeing as Wispypaw was replacing the former RiverClanner on the patrol. The warrior's eyes narrowed. Did Springburst even want her position in ShadowClan? Speaking of it, the ShadowClanner hadn't seen the warrior in a while. Like the tortoiseshell, Pondlily was formerly from RiverClan, but at least she had earned her right to be a part of ShadowClan. She had proved that whenever Dawnstar had given her her warrior name.

''Wispypaw,'' Pondlily dipped her head to the apprentice as she showed in Springburst's place. ''Glad you showed up. Seems like Springburst didn't, but I haven't seen her in a while, so...'' With a nod to her patrolmates, Pondlily led the patrol out of camp and towards the burial grounds.

''Coltsfoot, lavender, and uprooted dandelion is what Sleepysunrise asked for,'' Pondlily reminded her patrolmates once they had arrived at Mourning Ruins---specifically Wispypaw, since it was likely that the apprentice didn't know what they were looking for considering she was replacing Springburst. ''She said that coltsfoot is a group of small, yellow flowers with many straight petals, lavender is a tall plant with straight leaves and purple blooms, and that dandelions resemble coltsfoot, but are noticeably bigger with taller, thicker stems. Try to keep an eye out for those, and meet me back here whenever you've collected some of each. Oh, and try to keep from stepping on the graves; it's highly disrespectful to the dead lying here.''

Pondlily dipped her head to her patrolmates and padded away over soft, slushy snow that made her paws cold (obviously). Her eyes narrowed down to slits as she searched the gravesite for the herbs that Sleepysunrise had listed off. Coltsfoot, lavender...

Dandelion!

The warrior spotted it a few fox-lengths away and made her way over, careful not to tread on the graves as she picked her way over them. Pondlily examined the dandelion. Sleepysunrise had wanted it uprooted, if she remembered correctly.

Pondlily carefully used a paw---claws unsheathed---to scrape up dirt, gently pulling a couple of the dandelions out of the ground by their roots.

The warrior noticed that some lavender was nearby, too, so she bounded over to it. There were no graves here on the edge of the ruins, so Pondlily hadn't needed to pick her way over.

Pondlily sneezed whenever dust from the lavender she had nipped from the bush brushed her nose. She huffed, her ears twitching, before making her way over to the last plant---coltsfoot.

Pondlily was relieved when there was no dust to show for her efforts of harvesting the coltsfoot, and it also seemed to be intact, too. She made her way back over to the place she had left her patrolmates to wait on them.

Unfortunately the apprentice didn't witness the others gesture since after all they couldn't see anything. Yet they did hear them address them and tag on some comment about the other one chosen to do the patrol. When will the day come when others will realize that they wont care of others actions unless it effected them. Wispypaw wasn't bothered that much by patrols, it was much better then being stuck in camp surrounded by brain dead fools. "A Clan hoppers whereabouts have nothing to do with me" they said in a clear cut tone. If they had nothing else to say about anything the dark feline just silently followed the other clan hopper in front of them.


They gave a flick of an ear tuft to show they heard them, not bothering to really remember the herbs descriptions. Wasn't like they would be able to see it after all, so it was all based on luck for them. Blind blue eyes rolled as they just ventured off to look for said herbs on their own for the moment. Wispypaw felt the ground beneath them, feeling for any kind of plant that seemed different and also giving them the occasional sniff.

They ended up brushing against something that they had thought was one of the plants they needed. Yet when they went to uproot it they realized they felt no petals or whatever attached to the plant. With a low growl they spat out the weed they supposedly had before moving on. to try again. Second time seemed to be the charm since they came upon another one this one felt like it had the petals mentioned. Wispypaw tried to carefully dig up the dirt around the plant that was hopefully right in front of her. Which worked out if they had noticed the few roots they had managed to lose while they pulled it out. Hopefully their older sibling would be fine with this since it was the best they could do at the moment,

Now to find the other two stupid herbs on the list, more then what they had to collect the last time they went on a herb patrol. Now something was telling them that finding coltsfoot was going to be a bit harder to find. They sure hoped it wouldn't otherwise they might just lose all of their sanity. No way did they have the time to search endlessly for something that didn't want to be found apparently. Their instincts spoke right because they did not feel anything that met the description of the plant mentioned beforehand. All they seemed to have run into was a much of snowy grass from what they could feel.

With the most sour expression they've ever had on their face they moved on to see if they got lucky again. Thankfully it seemed they had a much better time finding lavender since it had a fragrant smell to it. Following the scent they felt around in the spot where the smell was the strongest and felt for the flowers that was mentioned. Once they felt sure of it that this was the right one they nipped it at the base of said flower. They had also felt another one next to it so they nipped that one also adding onto their collection.

A lash of their tail and they retraced their steps to return back to the gathering spot. They might of not gotten a lot but it was better than nothing in their eyes. Wispypaw felt another presence nearby so they assumed it was Pondlily. The only acknowledgement they gave to the warrior was a ear flick and proceeded to sit and wait with her bundle of herbs.

Pondlily's whiskers twitched in acknowledgement of Wispypaw's return---and with some dandelion and lavender. Blackberrybat's attempts were...less successful, to say the least, when he returned with nothing. Nothing. Sleepysunrise isn't going to be pleased.

''No luck?'' Pondlily questioned the tom, getting to her paws. The warrior nodded to her patrolmates and retrieved her collected herbs, starting back towards camp. She said nothing else on the way back.

Where were they going again? ...Right, Mourning Ruins. She had been watching the various patrols gather and interact, eyes glued on their leaving forms - she hadn't noticed Bleedingpaw approach, not until his head touched hers and her eyes snapped to his. She watched him for a long moment, blinking once, watching him step back. She glanced down, then up. Down again.
"You've grown."
She stated her silent observation rather than answering his question right away. Turning around, her shoulder lifting and head tilted in a light shrug. She hadn't considered the seasons; the weather was warming, so she assumed they would be easier to find, now. She hoped so, and opted to answer with an affirmative hum, focused on completing the patrol.

Only Rookfire needed to arrive, and they needn't wait long for the former medic's appearance; he was there, and already moving to the camp's exit after touching his nose to Bleedingpaw's shoulder. When did they get so close? She wondered with a sidelong glance and a nervous flick of her ear. She paused, glancing back to ensure Bleedingpaw was following, then took a trot to catch up with the leaving Rookfire. Hmpf. Her lips came together in a slight frown, speeding up her pace to match his long strides and take the lead. Former medic or not, she was leading this patrol, not him. She couldn't let herself be made a fool by letting the reinstated enforcer show her up already.

In all regards the walk to mourning ruins was a short one; it felt short, in any case, more focused on the task at paw than the trek of the slight chill left in the weather, despite the warm sun beating down on them. It was a mere wind that left this chill. Her eyes swept over the two toms - frankly, she couldn't care less what Rookfire would do, he was an adult and responsible for himself. Bleedingpaw was coming up on that age too, but she still spoke aloud.
"Don't stray too far;"
Which was an ironic statement, because as those words left her maw, she was already headed for the nearby lake within the ruins. She was interested in finding the cattails there, hunched by the fact that they seemed to grow near water (it was also just a matter of time before Rookfire would find out her patrol blunder regarding him - she was unsure whether she was ready to admit to that yet).

'He'd grown' Yeah no kidding. Looking down at Sleepysunrise, one of the oldest of his siblings, actually the oldest now, he was kind of... Struck by how young she looked, small. She was older then him of course and still kind of seemed it but with his lean tall frame of sharp edges barely softened by silky fur verses her fluff rounding her. Well unless she got a really really late in life growth spurt or some harsh scarring it wouldnt stay that way.


Confusing, and the tom couldnt help but cock his head a bit even as he responded ignoring that thought. "Apparently. You must have inherited your stature from your father." Because all the other siblings were also taller then her now and had surpassed Lostspark even, some trending towards Darkfalls absent but large frame.
"Though me too perhaps, I dont remember her well but... I think my birth mother was not quite this tall."

Nodding pleased as Rookfire joined Bleedingpaw flicked a tail against the new enforcers side in a return for the nose bump, snorting lightly as he mused "Im the odd one out of this group today arent I? You both know what these herbs are for no doubt and Ive no clue." Following the more experienced cats.
It was true enough after all. Bleedingpaw knew bits and bobs but when compared to the two trained professionals... heh.


Well the trained professionals could correct him or deign to share their knowledge of the little white flowers he was sniffing at to make sure they were correct if they wished, for now he was trying to pluck the little things without swallowing them on accident.

as soon as all cats arrived, rookfire stood once more. long limbs clicked softly as he stretched quietly before setting the pace on their way out. none of the cats with him should struggle to keep up so he only checked a pawful of times. mudslide and wildstorm were warriors, and shadowpaw had been an apprentice when he himself just joined shadowclan (man what was that kid even doing all that time?!) so none of them had any excuse to get lost.

still, once they arrived, rookfire signalled the others to stop with a swish of his tail while moving another fox length over the invisible scent line, maw agape. the air was warm and there mustve been some rabbits here just before sunrise, but no owls. "were clear for now. you smell or see anything weird, speak up immediately. shadowpaw with me, wildstorm you stay with mudslide. i trust you dont require a reminder for how much prey youre supposed to catch?" the former medic finally spoke up, head cocked and voice sharp at the very end of his small speech.

"Of course I know how much to catch silly...!" Shadowpaw let out in a purr and a soft wave of her tail. Always so sharp the other cats of her clan was but she didn't mind it at all, she started to come to the theory that they were just hiding their little sparkle inside. Friendship wasn't impossible. "Maybe we can find some pretty things to keep once were done and walking back!" She jumped with joy a few times, before putting on her game face.

"Alright, let's hunt..." She said with a silly devious voice. Even work could be fun. Though she was much more used to hunting frogs mostly since it was a blast getting all muddy, she had caught other prey items. She hadn't hunt around this part of the clan before so she wasn't sure what to expect around here, but given the relative dryness as compared to the swamps frogs were off the table.

Shadowpaw could be the sillies cat in the world but she became deadly serious when it was time to hunt. Without thinking on it her stealth vanished on Rookfire, but kept in mind at least not to get far from them. Rats never had a chance against this huntress. Over the course of the hunt she was able to get four rats and held them by their tails just barely. Maybe she caught too many, they were heavy!!

"Ok...!" She said coming into the open. "I got them, Rookfire would you like to spot a feather with me?"

rookfire padded along quietly, listening to the siblings banter and trying not to feel like he was missing out. there was just some familiarity he could neither understand nor allow himself to crave, connections werent good for him anyway. he'd seen what the last time he'd allowed himself to get attached to someone had done. even his tentative friendship with bleedingpaw and scorpionpaw could backfire, push him into ultimate ruin. enough that was just a destructive train of thought.

the comment about bleedingpaws birthmother made him perk up briefly, he knew of course that the young bengal tom wasnt lostsparks kit, but he mentioned his biological family so little it was easy to forget. "you know quite a bit more than most cats do" rook simply replied with a cock of his head. he was also a lot more pleasant to work with, so, despite the youngers seeming dislike to medicine itself, he could make quite the aid. what was up with the two real aids anyway? now that he was thinking about it, rookfire couldnt remember seeing them around, not to say on herb patrol, in the recent moons.

"you remember juniper berries mmh? we talked about them some time ago, maybe sleepysunrise can tell you about cattails and chamomile as well?" he added after a brief pause, eyes flicking to the younger medic, partly because he himself had very little experience and knowledge of both herbs and because he felt like it would be overstepping if he took on explaining them with her here.
