Morning. He'd woken up early as ever and was practically raring to get out and do something. The tom pulled himself out of his nest, shaking the moss from his paws, and skulked out into the clearing. Training these apprentices was his highest priority right now. Perhaps he should run a couple separate lessons for each of them. Though, he couldn't think of which to go with first. The tom poked his head into the apprentice den, and decided to settle on the first one he saw. Taking a few paw steps into the den, he woke her with a small prod. Hopefully that should be enough - he didn't like staying in that den for long. Quickly, he made his way out, and waited.

She groaned as she rolled over in her nest, a prod in the side of her ribs awaking her from her wonderful sleep. Who DARES wake her?!- Oh, it was her mentor.. Her gaze softened a bit as she watched her mentor leave the den. Welp, time to get up.. Good, she didn't want to be with the rest of these snoring badgers anyways! She stretched her front legs out, bringing herself to her paws and dragging her toes as she walked out to the clearing. She sat in front of her mentor, still half asleep as she attempted to collect her thoughts.

Good job he'd managed to wake her up, he wasn't sure what he'd do if it hadn't worked - maybe just awkwardly wait around the clearing till she woke? Or just... Go and hunt alone? "I figured we'd get some hunting done. Do some training, fill up the kill pile."

She nodded a greeting, repeating the sentiment, "morning." Her voice was low and grumbly, still unused from the night of rest. "yeah, sounds good, I've been doing a bunch of hunting." She smiled, raising her head a bit. Normally she would hold herself as high as she could, showing her pride, how proud of herself she was. But, stars above, she was so tired still... A bit of hunting would be sure to wake her up!

"Good to hear." He nodded curtly. He was pleased to have such a self motivated apprentice - it seemed luck kept ccoming his way with the 'paws. He'd still never had to deal with a lazy apprentice, all for the better to be honest. "Right, let's head out." He beckoned with his tail, leading her into the territory. It was still cold out, extreamely so in the mornings. though, nothing unbearable. Hopefully they'd get a bit of sun through the trees, to warm the gorund a little. He cam eot a stop as they arrived at the Dawning Woods. He scented the air, trying to grasp anything on the wind. There were toads, mice, even a hint of squirrel hung in the air. Hopefully, this would be a productive trip. "Do you smell anything?" He tilted his head at the apprentice.

Talonpaw sleepily followed her mentor, though her morning haze didn't last for long, as the cool morning stung at her nose and paws. She let out a bit of a sneeze, straightening herself up to a bit more of her usual stride. It wasn't bad enough for her to complain, but the cold nipping at her leathers was just what she needed as a wakeup call.
She stopped next to her mentor, longing for the warmth of the morning sun, but a bit of work might warm her up, so she focused on that instead of her wishes. She sniffed the ground, then the air, trying to get a grasp of what was around, what was already here, and where she should go. "mmm, I smell some.. frogs?.. Definitely some mice..." She sniffed the air a bit more, "And a little bit of.. squirrel I think?" She was trying to get better differentiating her scents, she needed to be able to do that so she could actually track something. She wasn't too far off... "Wouldn't frogs be all sleepy in the cold, though?" She questioned, tilting her head. They were water dwellers, after all, and the chilled water might not be their favorite habitat....

Perfect. Looks like she knew her stuff already. Though, the frog question took him aback. He'd never even thought about it - despite his love for hunting, he'd be lying if he said it was his strongest skill. He never thought about things like the weather's effect. "Hmm. You might be right." He commented, "about the frogs. I 'spose we'll be seeing more of them as the water thaws." Thinking about it, they definitely saw fewer frogs in winter. Less so than other prey animals. He crouched down, scenting the air ahead of them. Upwind, the strongest scent seemed to be mice. He began tracking the scent, beckoning with his tail for Talonpaw to follow. "Can you tell whether we're upwind of downwind right now?" He asked.

Either way, she had to stay focused, she followed Newtbelly, inhaling the scent as it passed them. She narrowed her eyes, sniffing the air as she pondered the upwind downwind question... Well... It was blowing at them... so... erm... "....Downwind?..." She answered, a complete guess, but an answer. Not knowing wasn't acceptable, she had to at least give an answer. It was a 50/50 shot anyways!

He nodded, though he could tell that the apprentice seemed unsure. "Yes - the wind's blowing toward us. That means we can smell the prey, but they can't smell us." He crept onward a little, motioning for Talonpaw to follow. The scent of mouse was thick now - there must be at least one near. As they crept, he kept an eye on Talonpaw's technique - trying to gauge whether or not he needed to correct anything.

She nodded before her head seemed to almost lock onto this scent. She was focused, paws moving almost seamlessly underneath her, other than the occasional leaf she accidentally disturbed. She stopped at the crunching under her paws, ears swiveling to make sure she was being quiet. Huh, how did she know all this? She didn't know, all she knew was that she had been great at hunting since her lessons with Pondlily and her hunting patrol.
