Pondlily's ears perked up at the sound of Mudslide's voice. A flaying event? Wasn't that a little...bloody? Ears twitching, the warrior narrowed her eyes and made her way over. She didn't have any questions, so she didn't have to seek out Mistlewhisker---unless Pondlily just wanted to. Dawnstar had been the cat to teach her how to flay.

hiding in the shadows, she thought. it felt... unreal. a warrior. thats what she was now.
she flicked her ears, wasnt the cat calling out the new enforcer? what was her name... mud something.
flaying? something she wasnt taught? how absolutely fun??? she picked herself up from her shadowed hiding place and settled herself in the mass of gathering cats.

Honeybreeze trudges into the clearing, originally heading for the dens, but her ears prick up at the tentative calling of an event.
She wasn't previously somecat to be interested in something so, gross? But Honeybreeze has had a recent experience that's changed her opinions on violence, anyway. This a skill she wants to learn, to apply elsewhere if necessary.
Honeybreeze's eyes finally spark with hope, interest, a will to move forward. Her tail flicks as she glances at the other gathered cats and found a pair of apprentices. She can't quite remember their names, but this is a social event, too and she's could use some friends.
"I assume you're both old enough?" The long-haired warrior flicks an ear, padding up to them. She's mostly joking, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Wisppaw shot the warrior a glare... To then have his face pushed to the side by Shadowpaw. "Be nice Wisppaw..." She then looked to Honeybreeze. "Yes we both are, we are warrior age just uh slow in training. Though here we are to doing some learning!" What else was there really to tell. She then got a soft bite from Wisppaw and chuckled softly before moving her paw away from his face. The two were friends and annoyed each other like friends.
"Having something added to keep warm in this time sounds nice." Wisppaw said as he looked to the event organizers.

Mistlewhisker watched with a stony face the mild-mannered Mudslide try to call the attention of their clanmates. Mistlewhisker would have done it herself, but she wanted the Enforcer to be running it. It was her idea after all, and Mistlewhisker believed credit belonged where credit was due. Mistlewhisker wholeheartedly believed that knowledge was meant to be shared between everyone. The skills to survive and thrive should not be kept only by the few, and that was what she loved about the Enforcers. They were constantly striving to teach the clan and improve the lives they live. It was partially the reason Mistlewhisker had approved the flaying training in the middle of leafbare. They would not be wasting prey, and they were learning a valuable skill to ensure they do not get sick from exposure to cold. The Deputy shook herself from her brief reverie leapt up onto the Grimpeak as Mudslide slid down, giving the molly a nod before focusing on the growing crowd below her.
"In order to preserve prey, I want each of you to pair up." There was fifteen participants, but including her, it made sixteen. "And, to keep this effective and efficient, I will list out pairings here." That way cats did not have to mill about, especially in cold weather like this.
"Fishpaw [ @Spider ] and Mudslide [ @Marigoldwhisper ]." Mistlewhisker had noticed the young apprentice running up to the Enforcer, so she figured they might as well work together. Fishpaw seemed eager, and Mistlewhisker knew the Enforcer could use a little more practice interacting with excitable clanmates. But she would be keeping an eye on them to assist Mudslide if needed. "Bleedingpaw [ @Rani ] and Rookfire [ @alec ]." Another pairing already together. "Wisppaw [ @Fish ] and Honeybreeze [ @GrimacingHeron ]." Now for the cats who were less inclined to chat... "Pondlily [ @kira ] and Sootpaw [ @iliri ]." Mistlewhisker scanned the remaining cats. More apprentices than warriors... "Hazycry [ @c1nder ] and Lionpaw [ @Rowan ]. Mudburr [ @Cloverspring ] and Shadowpaw [ @Fish ]. Darkpaw [ @Rowan ] and Flytail [ @Tallstar ]. Stempaw [ @Luna16 ], you will learn under me."
"Some of you may already know how to flay. I want you to assist your partners, but remember to let them learn on their own. Do not do the task for them." Mistlewhisker cast her gaze to the various warriors of the group, in case any of them had been taught the clan's unnerving tradition. "This lesson is not for those of weak constitution. If you cannot handle removing skin from flesh--" Mistlewhisker was not going to sugar coat it for them. There was no need, in her mind. "Then do not attend."
"Every pair grab a piece of prey from the pile. Preferably something with fur." Mistlewhisker padded over to the pile with everyone else and chose a mouse. She brought it back to Stempaw and set it between them before addressing the rest of the group. "When you get your prey, assign yourselves either to the head or tail of the prey. It does not matter which, so do not quarrel. What you will do is each of you will split up the tasks evenly. When you are not working on the prey, you will watch your partner to note what they do." Mistlewhisker would not tolerate kittish behavior in her lesson.
"I will go first, to start off the lesson." Mistlewhisker murmured to Stempaw. "First" she called, low voice rumbling like distant thunder. "Splay the legs of the prey. I want one member of your team to use a claw and slice a circle around the back legs just above the paw." Mistlewhisker pulled her mouse close, using a delicate claw to slice around the paw, separating the leg skin from the paw skin. "Once you are finished, connect those two lines with a line just under the tail." She dragged her claw from the cut on the right leg to the cut on the left leg, lifting the mouse's tail with her teeth and slicing just under it. Once she was done, she gripped the tail again. "Finally, you will snap the tail bone." A sickening crack echoed through the clearing, the mouse's pink tail separated from the spine where it connected. "Next, we will move on to the top half. Switch partners." With that, she waited for everyone else to finish.
[Please choose whoever will go first to flay the bottom part of your prey! It does not matter who does what; you'll be getting the front and back of the pelt as rewards, not head and bottom so don't worry >:-). The next post will be on 1/25/25!]

Pondlily’s tail tip twitched as she heard the name of the cat Mistlewhisker had paired her with. An apprentice, Sootpaw. Well, most warriors had been given apprentices—a good way to distribute the knowledge, she supposed.
Her river-blue eyes spotted the tabby tom in the crowd, and Pondlily beckoned Sootpaw over to her with a flick of her muzzle after having grabbed a squirrel from the prey pile to wait on him.

Somecat, if he's dreaming do not wake him. Stempaw was excited to learn how to flay on it's own, but to be paired with the deputy?! The line of excellent teachers he was getting to work with was growing longer! At this rate, I'll be the best warrior in the clan in no time! He bounded over to Mistlewhisker and sat down, twitching in place eagerly as he waited (kinda) patiently. He nodded when she said she'd demonstrate first, that made sense, and turned his gaze to watch her every movement carefully. Huh, this process was a lot more delicate than he originally thought. So you start at the back, huh? Okay, okay.
Was it impressive or disturbing that he was able to observe so closely with no problem? He wasn't sure, and the thought never entered his mind. He was entirely too focused on the task, and he was going to get to go next! He looked up at Mistlewhisker, unable and unwilling to hide the eagerness from his gaze. Perhaps other clanmates might find that eagerness disturbing, but it was a cool trick and he wanted to learn it dammit!

Mudslide leapt from the Grimpeak hastily, briefly glancing at the deputy soon enough to see her nod of--- well, something, Mudslide couldn't really tell, and her own icy gaze of acknowledgement probably didn't offer anything either.
Unsheathed claws pierced heavily into icy ground to better stabilize herself. Then, immediately, after having all her words practically ripped out of her, Fishpaw scrambled up to her. Oh gosh, Fishpaw and her antics.
Mudslide wasn't in the mood for chatting, ever, but now even more so. So there the scarred apprentice was, supposedly knowing how to flay--- how does she know that? Icy eyes glanced to the prey at the younger cats paws. She then lifted her gaze, ready to shake her head, before her attention was turned to Mistlewhisker.
Oh, the event was starting.
Flaying was explained, thankfully, which left room for something Mudslide could focus on other than how her throat screamed at her. She'd never talked so much in her entire life, and she was about to burst, mentally and physically. Her tail eventually wound back around her trembling paws as she listened, making a mental list of the procedure. Well, it was now or nothing.
Seeing as Fishpaw had gotten something that actually had fur, she figured they might as well start now (was the pairing intentional?). She flicked a claw at the animals back legs, claiming the area for herself. She parted the legs of the furred animal before making her cuts and incisions with her claws. The cuts weren't perfect, albeit wobbly, but she was sure they'd be fine. The enforcer snapped the tail of the animal with little effort before backing away and pawing at it.
Fishpaw had the stage now. So for the time being, Mudslide was going to think about bugs.
To be honest the bengal tom had been expecting to be accosted by a sibling but Rookfire wasnt half bad an option. Actually oddly enough for his complete lack of self esteem Bleedingpaw had started to have an odd sort of superiority complex over some of his clanmates. The other clans? That was a given, they were clearly lesser in strength and mind even if some like windclan had some sense. But his clanmates? That was a new byproduct of the toms maturation. Bleedingpaw was smart, he always had been and always had asked questions about everything to further that and now to him at least this growing knowledge was revealing some.... lacks, in others. They were stronger then the tom and his wobbles, but not smarter and he'd thus grown less tolerant of their presence.
Rookfire however was good. He was smart and skilled though something was clearly up given the demotion but Dawnstar had said it wasnt the clans business and that Rookfire was still good as a warrior. So it wasnt Bleedingpaws business.
Thus the fellow tom got a nod and comfortable silence, an agreeing huff at Fishpaws antics after seeing Rookfires displeasure. There was being happy and playful, Bleedingpaw could be that himself, but then there was being chaotic and that was riverclans and thunderclans (decreasing) wheelhouse thank you.
At least the lesson was interesting.
Blue eyes fixed on the deputy and the demonstration the bengal reflected this might not be a skill he'd excel in given his systemic lack of coordination and gave a quiet "Sorry if our sample doesnt turn out very neat." head bobbling around as it always did. The instructions were easy enough so with a soft "Ill get the prey, give me a moment." Bleedingpaw went to play runner.
He was tempted to grab the gopher he'd hunted himself recently, but given his lack of fine motor skills bigger was probably better and more forgiving of mistakes so a rabbit was grabbed instead. Its fur wasnt as pretty as a squirrel but then again there wasnt a vast array of options there that were pretty and rabbits were soft.
Wobbling his way back the rabbit was deposited and it was time for the nitty gritty. "Suppose the two of us will share this after we've skinned it. Waste in leaf bare might earn Mistlewhisker skinning us. Do you want to take the head or the tail? Ive no preference though unless you want it I am curious to see if we can have it turn out well enough to line my nest."
The tom wouldnt admit it but he was still struggling with no longer being able to snuggle up to his mother anymore. If something soft solved the issue Bleedingpaw might just take up his psuedo grandmothers habit, though he doubted any of his attempts would ever be pretty enough to make good gifts for the leader.
