Primroseadder slipped from the warriors’ den and out into the chilly leaf-bare air in the clearing of RiverClan’s camp. Riftpaw had asked for a combat session with her, and she had agreed. Not many of RiverClan’s warriors and mentors were wanting to train their apprentices for some StarClan beknown reason.

Making her way over to the apprentices’ den after giving her pelt a quick wash, the warrior stuck in her head. “Heya, Riftpaw? Are you in here? I’m here to take you out for that battle session you asked me for.”

Shaking out his pelt as he exited the apprentices den, Riftpaw blinked up at Primeroseadder. ”Okay.” He mewed curtly, tilting his head up at the young warrior. He seemed to be contemplating something.

After a long stretch of silence, he finally spoke. ”I’m not very good.” He admitted with a shrug, but even the most socially inept could realize that frustration flitted across his face. He wanted to be good- he just wasn’t. He didn’t understand why he struggled so much. ”I’ll try.”

Primroseadder’s tail swayed behind her as she led the way out of camp, glancing over her shoulder to be sure that Riftpaw was following her. “Don’t say that,” She meowed softly whenever he mentioned he wasn’t really good at combat. “Today, I will make sure that you’re good at it, even if it takes a while.”

She stopped at the training hollow, her emerald eyes flickering with memories; this was where Stormstar - Dusklion, back then - had given her her first battle session, and now she was about to repeat that with Riftpaw.

“What are a few reasons we might fight the other Clans?” Primroseadder asked the tom, her ears twitching.

Nodding at her response, Riftpaw did feel a little bit better at her assurance. Maybe he just hadn’t found his fighting style yet? Well, who knows. Hopefully today he would figure it out- at least a little.

Puffing out his pelt against the cold, the young tom stood rigid as he stared at Primeroseadder in the training hollow. ”Why?” He echoed. Surely she knew. He tilted his head at her.

Oh. Right. She was probably quizzing him. ”Er…if they cross the border or steal prey…?” It sounded more like a question than an answer, but his expression never changed.

Primroseadder nodded at his response, her whiskers twitching. “Territory invasions and prey stealing are both reasons that we might fight the other Clans,” she meowed, whisking her tail. “The two most primary reasons, too.”

She planted her feet onto the ground, spread out evenly. “Attack me, claws sheathed,” She ordered. “Don’t ask questions; just do it.”

Nodding at her response, it was clear Riftpaw was absorbing everything the she-cat was saying. He was right! That was a good start. Maybe he could even-

'Attack me, claws sheathed.'

Icy blue eyes looked at Primroseadder, bewildered as she told him not to ask questions. He briefly opened his mouth as if to say something, but quickly remembered what she had just said and shook his head quickly, dropping into a bit of a sloppy crouch before launching himself at the warrior.

[ RIFTPAW ROLLED A 20 ]

Despite his less-than-exemplary start, Riftpaw actually managed to make contact with Primeroseadder. Granted, he didn't really know what he was doing, so he just briefly clung to her back (claws sheathed still) before dropping off the side. His eyes were sparkling. "How was that? Was that good?" He looked up at her hopefully.

Primroseadder would have stumbled beneath Riftpaw’s weight hadn’t she sunk into her pads; but his brief hesitation had given her a few heartbeats to brace herself for the attack just before he had made it; yet she stood, head and tail held high.

“Excellent,” She purred, lifting a forepaw. “Now, we’re going to start with a more simple blow—the front paw slash. It can be used with either front paw, and can be considered mild or dangerous depending on how much strength you put into the blow. Watch this:”

The warrior lashed out with a paw, the move swift and steady. If there had been an actually enemy instead of an imaginary one where she had lashed out at, they probably would have suffered sufficient damage to their shoulder.

She looked back at him, eyes narrowing. “You try, Riftpaw.”

At Primroseadder's praise, Riftpaw's tail lifted high in delight. He was starting to get it! Duskleaf would be so proud- and he can show off to Beaverpaw! He couldn't wait to spar with him. He frowned for a moment. Would Duskleaf feel betrayed that he had asked another warrior for training?... No, that wasn't like him. Duskleaf was kind and understanding. He would be proud of Riftpaw, and that's all he really wanted.

As Primeroseadder began explaining the front paw swipe attack, Riftpaw tilted his head curiously. "Okay." He nodded after a moment of silence. It seemed easy enough.

[ RIFTPAW ROLLED A 3 ]

Lifting his paw, the young apprentice struck out hard...unfortunately for him, too much power was behind the punch that wasn't actually meant to collide with anything, and he lost his balance and staggered forward before awkwardly banging his chin on the ground. He gritted his teeth but said nothing as he avoided Primeroseadder's gaze. "Maybe I really am hopeless." He muttered darkly.

Primroseadder stepped forward to steady the apprentice and help him to his paws. “You’re not hopeless, Riftpaw,” She meowed sternly, her emerald hues finding his blue ones. “Every cat makes mistakes, and every cat learns from their mistakes. So, with that being said, I want you to try again.”

The warrior paused for a moment, stepping back to give Riftpaw some more room. “Try again, and don’t worry about it if you mess up; that’s what training is for—to prepare you for the life of a warrior. Believe me, warriors make mistakes too; I lost count of how many mistakes I’ve made. Trust me, Riftpaw, you’re not the only one. Now, try again—you’ll get it right sooner or later.”
