Marigoldkit's eyes shot open wide. Oh! okay! He was home, cool. The chimera kitten blinked the sleep from his eyes as a yawn escaped his maw. It seemed to be morning? maybe early afternoon? They didn't really care either way. It felt like they hadn't slept at all, and technically- she hadn't.

The Thunderclan kitten looked around the dimly lit nursery, their eyes slowly adjusting to the light reflecting off the snow as he exited the den. A shiver ran down her spine, sure about half of their body was covered in thick long fur, but the other half was still short haired and it didn't do much to protect them from the cold.

That's when he remembered his mission! Right! Find mama! Their two different coloured gaze scanned the clearing around them, trying to pick out Strawberryfur's pelt among their clanmates. When he couldn't spot her, he decided squealing was the way to go.

"MAMAAAAAAAAAAAA" The kit screeched above the crowd before once more looking around.

Screeching was indeed effective. The pale ginger tabby…queen…had been at the fresh-kill pile. She was just about to select a mouse for herself when Marigoldkit’s cries reached her ears. Instinct took over. Before she could even rationalize a response, her paws were flying across the snow, barely touching the ground until she reached her kit. “What’s wrong?!” She asked out of breath, panting as she immediately began pressing her nose to Marigoldkit in different places. Checking for injuries.

Marigoldkit puffed up their chest attempting to look bigger, but not in an aggressive way. They purred as their mom nosed them, waiting until she was done to speak "Hey mama! I have a question" The said firmly before tilting their head "Who's Houndkit?" He asked curiously. Her tail swayed behind her.

Strawberryfur purred softly when she realized her kit was okay. Thank the stars! She really couldn’t handle losing another one. But then Marigoldkit asked their question, and the queen stiffened, frozen. She blinked at her kit, how did they know about Houndkit?? Her pelt began to spike as she just stared in horror, feeling a sharp stab on grief in her chest. “H-Houndkit?” She fumbled over her words, still unmoving. “Where did you hear that name?” She felt…not anger but something similar bubbling under her skin. Did Softcherry tell her kits about Houndkit? Or Mintleaf?

There was no other logical explanation. Where else would Marigoldkit have picked the name up from? Strawberryfur straightened, fixing an angered gaze on the nursery entrance before taking a deep breath. Trying desperately to steady her heartbeat. This wasn’t how Squirrelfang and Poppywhisker raised her and Sunny, and she didn’t want to be a bad parent. Poppywhisker was always patient and tender with her and Sunny, she always wanted to be a mother like her if she did have a litter. And here she was messing it up. She looked back at Marigoldkit, eyes saddened. “Houndkit is…your brother.” She admitted, really not looking forward to this conversation.

Her tail suddenly felt like deadweight. The queen leaned back in her haunches and sat down with a heavy thump, as if her hind legs could no longer hold her. “Why do you ask?” She mewed, hoping to get answer from Marigoldkit on this and her first question. She didn’t think the other queens would tell her kits about their dead brother, deprived of his first breaths of life. And she didn’t want to hear his name or talk about him. It was too painful. But as the heaviness seemed to spread throughout her body like a virus, she realized she would have no choice. Regardless of the how, Marigoldkit had learned their brother’s name. They’d have questions, and she would need to provide the answers. No matter how much she didn’t want to.

Marigoldkit watched her expression closely as his question hit her, he watched a range of emotion flicker in her gaze before settling on what seemed like anger. The strange chimera tilted her head as his mama asked where he'd heard the name, they opened their mouth to respond, furrowing their brows as he closed his mouth, waiting for his mother to finish her questions. Once she was sure she was done, they finally explain, at least, they felt they were explaining.

"I met him- and I know who he is to me... but... why didn't I before now?" The kit asked, he wasn't exactly sure what they were asking, it wasn't something she was necessarily upset about, it was more morbid curiosity than anything else. Mari's tail swished behind them as they looked up curiously into Strawberryfur's gaze.

Strawberryfur almost felt bad that Mari had to watch her go through those different emotions…almost. But then…when they did finally answer her…her jaw could only drop. What…did they mean? They met their dead sibling? How is that possible? She shook her head as though she were shaking off water. Surely she must have misheard Marigoldkit? “You…but…what do you mean…you met them?” She asked sternly, her eyes reflecting a storm of confusion, pain, and guilt.

Mari tilted her head once more as she looked on at his mom "I met him in a dream-" He said with a casual shrug "I woke up in this starry place and he was there wandering. There was lots of cats there actually-" The said, recalling the dream and the surroundings.
