Kestrelkit sat near the back of the gathered crowd, her mismatched eyes wide with focus as Wolfhawk began his lesson. Though she was small and young, she held herself with quiet attentiveness, her tricolored ears swiveling forward to catch every word. As he described the appearance of deathberries, Kestrelkit could almost picture the bright red berries glistening ominously under the light. The mention of their sweet scent made her marbled nose twitch involuntarily, and she felt a shiver run down her spine at the idea of something so beautiful and harmless-looking being so deadly. She tucked her gray paws beneath her chest, a protective gesture as though shielding herself from the very thought. When Wolfhawk transitioned to foxglove seeds, Kestrelkit tilted her head slightly, her gaze narrowing in concentration. The comparison to poppyseeds struck her as important—she hadn’t ever seen the medicine cat carefully distributing poppyseeds to injured or sick cats, but the idea of a lookalike seed being lethal sent a jolt of unease through her. She tried to imagine how someone might mistake the two, and her mind filled with an imaginary scene of an unsuspecting kit or anyone stumbling upon foxglove seeds, mistaking them for the safe alternative. It made her stomach turn. The gravity of Wolfhawk's words pressed upon her, and for a moment, she glanced down at her own tiny paws, wondering how something so small—just one seed—could hold so much danger.

As Wolfhawk paused, opening the floor for questions, Kestrelkit hesitated. Her curiosity burned with questions about how cats had first discovered these poisons and how medicine cats like himself could tell them apart so easily. Still, she remained silent for now, her focus on absorbing every piece of information he offered. This knowledge felt heavy, like a responsibility she wasn’t sure she fully understood yet, but one she was determined to carry nonetheless as she grew older.
