It wasn't a hare. Appleleap's heart plummeted as the scent became clear and a coyote emerged from the trees and howled. To alert its pack, which was probably behind it. "Fox-dung," he swore just as coyotes swarmed into view. This was bad. Very bad. It was hard to be optimistic about this.

The pup came over to him and Fleckpaw; the apprentice swiped at its muzzle when it came too close. She had battle training at least, but Appleleap wouldn't let her face it off alone, even if it was only a pup. He lunged at it, tackling it to the ground (he was suddenly thankful for his hight), even as its jaws snapped at his chest. Trying to avoid the canines as best as he could, he sank his teeth into the pup's throat.

Spitting out the coyote's blood, Appleleap straightened and turned to the apprentices. "We're going to fight," he confirmed. "But I want you to look out for each other, okay? And follow Darkecho's orders. If he doesn't want you to fight, then don't." Hazel eyes flickered to the coyotes and back again. "You'll be okay, I promise." Even if he had no way of keeping that promise.

Appleleap nodded at Darkecho. "Let's slaughter some coyotes, hey?" His words were lighthearted, but fear shone through them. There was a good chance someone would die today. Pushing the thought away, Appleleap faced the coyotes and prepared for what would likely be the hardest battle of his life.

He nodded at Appleleap gravely, admiring the warriors optimistic bravery. Something Dark’echo was never capable of. “Apprentices, only fight if you have been trained to. I’m looking at you especially Alpinepaw.” He growled hastily over his shoulder. “If both me and Appleleap die or fall, you are to abandon us and run. Do you understand?!” The apprentices nodded quickly, eyes wide. “Good. Then let’s shred some cayotes.”

The coyote pup passed away after Darkecho instructed the apprentices. The family group became angry as they realized that their pup died. The pack growled and charged at the patrol.

Alpinepaw nodded quickly just before the family group attacked. Adrenaline started to quickly flow throughout her body. She knew that she had no battle training and ran to the nearest tree. She climbed it as fast as she could out of fear. She watched the skirmish from the branch she was on.

One of the older coyotes started attacking Fleckpaw. It was very angry at what Appleleap had done.

The coyotes are very close now- they immediately leap at the cats. Alpinepaw is lucky to escape without any on her back, but the other cats aren't. One of the pack jumps at Fleckpaw, jaws snapping.

What an ugly mutt. Fleckpaw snarls and rolls on the ground to avoid its bite, then she lashes out with her front claws on its muzzle. The coyote tries to avoid the attack, but it's old, and she's too fast for it- her claws graze its nose, leaving behind faint slashes. The coyote reels in pain, pawing its snout. The animal's eyes are red with anger, but Fleckpaw is just relieved to see that her attacks were working. Maybe she would be able to fend it off. She wasn't sure about Alpinepaw, but she herself sure had battle training before, and she was going to protect herself and her clan!

The mutt blindly tries to bite her again, multiple times. Fleckpaw may be big for her age, and she was strong, but she wasn't very fast. The coyote manages to get a chunk of her shoulder, and Fleckpaw cries out in pain. It tries to wrestle her to the ground.

Focus, she was not dying today! Fleckpaw makes a agile flip, ignoring the sinking pain in her right shoulder, and climbs onto the coyote's back. Her claws sink into its pelt. There's a lot of blood.

"I can take this one on by myself!" Fleckpaw yowls to the other cats. This was more fun than she thought! Maybe she was cut out for battle after all! Besides, she only had to fight off one coyote- but the two warriors were facing multiple. She had to lessen their burden. "Don't help me!"

(And just when she thinks it's going well... you know what happens, lmao.)

Appleleap

Darkecho nodded back at him gravelly before giving the apprentices instructions that Appleleap agreed with. After the apprentices had nodded their understanding, the group only had a moment to prepare themselves before the coyotes attacked.

One leapt at him, jaws snapping. Appleleap side-stepped and slashed a paw across its flank, leaving shallow cuts. A snarl escaped the creature's jaws as it twisted to bite his shoulder; pain flared up in it like a fire, and Appleleap gritted his teeth in a valiant effort to ignore the pain. He slashed the coyote's face, who recoiled; Appleleap took that as a chance to lunge at its neck. But his fangs missed flesh, and he landed on the ground with a stumble due to the burning bite on his shoulder.

As he took a moment to recover, Appleleap flashed a glance at the battlefield. He couldn't see Alpinepaw; hopefully that meant she had taken to hiding. With her age, it was likely she didn't have battle training. Fleckpaw seemed to be holding her own, so Appleleap turned his attention back to the coyote he was facing, figuring she would be fine for now without help.

That would turn out to be a costly mistake, but he didn't know that.

Darkecho watched the bushed up pelt of Alpinepaw rush by and skirt up a tree as the angry coyotes advanced on them. Good thinking, he thought. A smaller coyote charged up to him, drooling with excitement, and he braced himself. Hopefully such a small one would be easy to get out the way. Quickly, he slipped past the snapping teeth, darting under its belly and rearing up, sending it sprawling away in confusion. He pounced on it, clawing its flanks and digging his claws into its eyes. No time for mercy. Giving it one last sharp kick in the stomach, he let it go, and it charged away through the bushes, blood streaming from its eyes. He growled in satisfaction. But that was only a small one. Appleleap and fleckpaw were facing bigger problems, and had both taken worse wounds than him, while he left his skirmish with only some missing fur and a few mediocre scratches. But it was all coming for him soon. He caught fleckpaws eye, and was about to go help her, but she told him she was fine. Before he could object, an especially large mutt crashed into him rolling him into the bushes, out of sight. All the patrol could see and hear was rustling leaves and cries of agony, but it wasn’t clear wether it was the coyote or Dark’echo letting out the wails.

The terrified Alpinepaw watched the skirmish helplessly. Her ears were flattened and her whiskers backward. Her eyes were darting across the bloodied battlefield. She spotted Fleckpaw, who was about to die soon. Alpinepaw was breathing heavily as she heard some wails from the left of her. It seemed that most of the coyotes only obtained minor injuries from the patrol. She was thinking about what could she do to help. Alpinepaw knew she could not get away without getting some injuries.

Fleckpaw tries her best to hold on to the coyote. She couldn't possibly be a burden to her Clanmates, she could fend it off on her own. Adrenaline rushes through her body, as she clings to the animal while it yowls and rolls. But when her claws start slipping off the coyote's thick pelt, Fleckpaw wonders if she'd made a mistake.

It only takes a moment for everything to go horribly wrong.

Fleckpaw's claws fall off the coyote. This would be fine if the coyote was just rolling around or staying still; but at this moment, the coyote jumps up and wildly flails next to a large boulder to try and get her off itself. Which results in Fleckpaw's body flying off the creature and smacking into the rock.

There is only a sickening crack, no blood, and it happens very, very quick. One second Fleckpaw was grabbing onto the mutt, the other second she was flying in the air preparing a counterattack, and a few more seconds later, her neck snapped. She was suddenly outside of her own body, watching the entire scene from a moonlit landscape with the stars coming down on her paws. And was that... her dead mother?

"Watch." The queen purrs gently. Fleckpaw doesn't question it. A sense of calmness is suddenly flowing from within her consciousness, and so she silently watches the scene.

The coyote is not done with Fleckpaw. It picks up her body with its mouth, clamps down, and shakes it a couple of times for good measure before releasing it to join in the battle against the rest of the cats. Besides the slashes to the nose and the scratched pelt, it's surprisingly in decent shape. Unlike Fleckpaw's completely mangled body, with open eyes flecked as her namesake, that will never sparkle with joy again.

(Dino says Bumble might interfere, and also, they want to know how many coyotes there are. Annnd Bumble says they're going to demote/temporarily exile the warriors for letting things get to this point, so Darkecho and Appleleap might wanna know this in advance. If Appleleap survives, anyway.)

Basic outings never stayed basic outings these days. With everything infesting ThunderClan territory as of late, Bumblestar had wanted to pull together a competent group to make sure nothing else was out of place. She thought, at the very least, they'd end up running into a predator to be taken care of - not an incompetent group trying to handle things themselves.

The stench of coyotes and blood was overwhelming. Wordlessly and urgently, Bumblestar changed directions and headed for the source, trusting the others to follow. She could see Alpinepaw tucked safely away in a nearby tree, Fleckpaw lying on the ground, Appleleap bleeding, and Darkecho grappling with his own target. Four coyotes were currently in sight; she had no clue how many others were lingering around. What she did know is that these warriors were idiots for sticking around and trying to take them on.

"Spiderthroat, Wolfhive, help Darkecho! Mudhound, take Appleleap!"

With the order out, she turned and bodyslammed the coyote that had been about to turn from Fleckpaw. No clue whether or not the apprentice was still breathing, but it wasn't something she wanted to risk. Her claws sank into the mutt's shoulders and her jaws crunched down on its throat, killing it instantly.

From this angle, she could see that Fleckpaw's chest wasn't moving. The apprentice had been killed, and someone was going to be punished for it.

Honestly by the time trouble rolled around Spiderthroat at least was probably pleased for it. The coyotes were a relief from Mudhound endless chattering on todays outing. Though perhaps it was more evidence to the deputy that Mudhound was cursed because here was yet another ill advised patrol going up against a pack of stronger predators and ending up poorly for it. And Mudhound was involved yet again.


At least they were useful against large predators like that, and as the joy at the outing fled to the sudden new reality and the hornet moved.



Another day another predator, but looking at the steadily worsening state of Appleleap as the tripod sprinted over they started to doubt there was anything they could do to help their clanmate. The coyote was focused on the tom and didnt seem to care that the maine coon was borderline scaling it, claws shredding deep into the coyotes pelt until Mudhound had reached the coyotes back and bit down. Fangs deep into its spine would kill it soon, but seemingly not soon enough.

This- This rabid beast just didnt seem to care that Mudhound was killing it! It didnt care that the large maine coons claws were tearing its pelt to shreds, that the tripods fangs were dug deep into its spine already fracturing it and soon enough severing nerves. It was just so focused on Appleleap there was nothing to do and with the tom already injured.... Well what came next wasnt pretty.
