Last gathering was quite the bust. First gathering after an absence of three moons and somehow they managed to make every cat their enemy. The sun was beating down on over riverclan territory causing the sand and gravel path to heat up his paws. It was a decent day for hunting, perfect actually. He had been surprised when he was picked to be Fishpaws mentor, he had honestly not been the most responsible cat in the past few days. He had even recently been punished after failing to report a border patrol and windclans border. However he decided this was an opportunity to show his worth to the clan, teaching the next generation was an honour after all.

As they neared the main river in the territory mudsmoke slowed his pace until he had come to a halt. The most important part of a riverclan cats training was knowing how to hunt, swim and fight in water. It was their whole get up after all. Turning to face the young apprentice that had hopefully been following him he raised his voice and beckoned them towards him. "ok, Fishpaw I will be teaching you the basic of hunting in our territory. Which will primarily be fishing." this was his first lesson with the new apprentice and he was determined to make it a good one.

Turning to face the river and indicating to it with his tail he asked, "Do you know how to swim? I know there are kit curriculum lessons on it but many kits avoid those things." before teaching his apprentice to hunt, he had ensure they knew how to swim otherwise this could end with a trip to Mistyshard and berrypaws den. That would not put a good image on mudsmoke at all.

{ time is a bit wonky so let me clarify this, this would be around the time directly after April's gathering and before mudsmoke second punishment where he had been demoted to an apprentice for a quarter moon and also before the evacuation etc }

Fishpaw had never thought about
having to learn how to swim. stuff
was sometimes just scrambling all
over the place In her mind. pretty
weird huh? she was a young warrior.

She actually has never tried to swim.
so that's not a plus. you'd think part
of ur name being fish you would know
how to swim like one. it was weird.
she was kinda skidish about water
sometimes. Maybe she knows how
to swim, maybe she doesn't! She
will find out for sure.

"Um I actually have never tried to
swim before. But I can try!" she
said in a confident tone looking up
at mudsmoke.

She liked mudsmoke being her
mentor. it was fun. He was nice
to her! I mean she liked him as
a mentor. He would play games
with her and everything! Best
mentor ever in fishpaw's opinion!

She didn't know how to swim...okay that was a great start to this. He thought to himself as he glanced over at his apprentice and then at the river. How do you teach a cat to swim? He definitely wasn't going to do it the way his dad had taught him which had been to toss him into the river and let him figure it out on his own. He had been a kit for starclans sake!

"ok, so um. Swimming is in your blood, your a riverclan cat after all. It should come naturally- sort of." was that right? He had heard his clanborn clanmates say swimming was in their blood. Was that true, he wouldn't know he wasnt riverclan born after all. "but just for safety I'll try and teach you the best I can, I haven't taught anyone anything before so bear with me" he chuckled embarrassedly before making his way towards the river bank and wading through the water until it was lapping at his flank.

Fishpaw was smaller than him so she should be able to swim here and still touch the floor if needed. "ok so to start, try and make your way towards me. Use your hind legs to propel yourself forward by kicking and your front paws to keep you head above water and to steer your direction." hopefully that made sense he thought as he waited for his apprentice to give a shot and swimming.

Fishpaw wanted to swim, she just didnt want to drown like her mother did, sure
when her mom drowned the water was
very high and deep and this water wasnt
very high and deep, it was where fishpaw
could touch down on it. it was safer. safer.

Fishpaw hesitated for a moment about jumping
into the water, she knew that nothing would
happen to her with mudsmoke. so she jumped.
she did exactly what mudsmoke told her to do
with her front and back paws. she was swimming
she did it. "Look at me! I'm doing it! Haha!"she
paddled towards mudsmoke happily and proudly. she
conquered her fear!

If the rivers water hadn't been preventing him he would have puffed his fur up with pride. He had successfully taught something. Without help! He was proud with himself and with Fishpaw, she had gotten it first time. It really must be in riverclans blood to swim, huh? "Well done, your natural" he praised the apprentice as wadded through the depths till he was back at shore. He would usually let the apprentice swim longer, and get a hang of it but Fishpaw seemed to have got it handled and was swimming pretty decently already. She got it faster then he had at first.

Pulling himself out of the river and on the the bank, he shook out his fur spraying the droplets off his dark pelt. Giving his fur a few quick licks he turned back to his apprentice, wow he still couldn't get over the fact he HAD an apprentice, and beckoned her over with his tail. "ok guppy, uh Fishpaw. Would you like to swim longer or learn something else?" he left that pretty open ended he thinks, this way Fishpaw could choose what she wanted to learn next. He didn't really want to teach her hunting next, hunting was his favourite thing after all, but being a mentor now he had to teach his apprentice more then just how to catch prey. He'd let her choose what she wanted to learn next.

Little fishy learns how to swim

Fishpaw enjoyed playing in the water, she was still
a little skidish of it, but hopefully it will pass quickly.
She wanted to stay in the water but also wanted to
learn a new skill, riverclan must really be in her viens
to get swimming done that fast.

"Can I learn something else?" the young warrior
said as she leaped out of the water onto the shore. part
of her name was fish, so its cool how she can swim like
one. She was excited to learn something new. "But
can we come back here later? I wanna look for shells
for my new collection"

Mudsmoke watched as Fishpaw made her way back to the bank of the river and climbed out. Ye must have scored lucky with his apprentice, not many were so willing to comply with instructions and usually more than once did their own thing. He could already tell this mentorship, apprenticeship thing was going to go well.

"ofcourse, what would you like to learn next? Usually I would have taken you on patrol of the borders just so you could know you way around but we have strict rules Fadingsun that no one is allowed near the borders. Sadly" He explained, it was usually a highlight for apprentices when they were taken on border patrol. He understood the reason why those privileges had been taken away but that didn't make it any better really.

Shells, so he had a little collector for an apprentices. "sure we can come back here later or! I could take you to lionsbeach. There's a whole lot more shells there, maybe you can even find a crab" he suggested, only downside of lionsbeach was the Seagulls. He hated those dumb birds with his entire being.

Fishpaw liked the thought of going to lionsbeach, it was a cool name and also
sounded fun, and catching a crab? Even better! The apprentice trotted over to
Mudsmoke, and rubbed against him showing her respect for his wishes. She
always tried to be respectful, either if it was for something bad, or nice! She
was the nice kind. She just hopes that she can go hunting sooner or later!

She was disappointed about the border situation, but if their leader said that
they couldn't go near the border, it meant they couldn't go near the border.
All fishpaw knows is that it could be for their safety, and their safety only.
"Well that's ok! I'll get to see the border eventually boss!" she said
as she looked at mudsmoke with her head up high with confidence. "And
catching a crab sounds amazing! Can I go hunting? I think It will be fun! oh
and can I ride on your back?" she said respectfully to her mentor.

Much to his relief, Fishpaw took the news about not being able to visit the borders pretty well. "That's the spirit, kid" he commented proudly before turning back to the river. He hadn't taught her how to swim for nothing, he should probably teach her how to fish now aswell. Fishpaws question about him letting her ride on his back caught him off guard, he let out a surprised laugh before turning back to face his apprentice. "I'd say your a little to old for that." he shook his head amused. "we're not going anywhere far either, so those paws of yours should be able to carry you themselves."

Ok, so he teach how to fish now and then head back to camp. He had quite a lot to do now, border patrols, hunting patrols, gathering herbs- you get the just of it. It was a lot. He'd take Fishpaw out on a proper hunting lesson when he had a free day to that way he could Soley focus on it. Maybe even take her on a hunting patrol? Yeah that sound better. "how about I teach you to fish and then we head back to camp? I know this wasn't the longest lesson but I have to cut it short. Duties and such, I'll take you on a hunting patrol when I'm free? More experience" he suggested.

Giving his apprentice a moment to think, he approached the riverbank and sat down waiting. Okay now the hard part, he knew how to hunt but how to you teach it to someone else? His first apprentice, his first time teaching. He'd figure it out as he goes..... hopefully.

|{I was thinking maybe I could take Fishpaw on a hunting a patrol in the new territory/ mountain territory after his RP concludes?it would be a bit of a jump from this RP since a few weeks have past and they are now in the mountains. Post the evacuation and 3v1 battle. It would also make sense that he didn't train her during those few weeks since he was demoted to an apprentice for a quarter moon during that time /w\}|
