~ BRIARSPLASH ~
very large & fluffy dilute gray tortie she-cat with goldish-green eyes
shadowclan warrior | she-cat | 25 moons | abrasive, standoffish, loyal

~

The news of Lostspark stepping down was mildly surprising, but at least they had Mossfreckle. While not interested in anything with herbs herself, Briarsplash knew the importance of medicine cats — without them, how could they keep on fighting?

Briarsplash happily cheered the name of Mistlewhisker, a welcome deputy to step into the high ranks. She didn't know the warrior well personally, but knew of her formidable strength and capabilities. The warrior had a feeling that she'd do just fine.

The news of Silverpaw beating up some kits was also disturbing; despite her brutish nature, Briarsplash had a soft spot for kits. If she would've seen it, she might've knocked some sense into the apprentice herself.

Overall, it was a pretty interesting meeting so far. Briarsplash's whiskers twitched as she looked around her Clan, observing their reactions.

---

With so much being announced at once it was difficult to keep up with Dawnstar. But he manages. First and foremost Mossfreckle was going to be looking for an apprentice? That catches his attention, especially since he's not appointed as a guard beneath the Enforcers, as he would have liked to be. It frustrates him-- perhaps he was too young, hasn't done enough yet-- but the looming position beneath the healer cats interests him. As he cheers for their new deputy in congratulations his head spins with all the new ideas. All the new information.

He could do good for the clan. He could make them better. Help them go above and beyond all the others. So he would try. He would make himself useful as best he could to impress every single cat that came from Dawnstar's maw just now. Every Enforcer, every Guard, the Deputy, the Medicine Cat and her current apprentice-- they would all see. He would show them.

News of an apprentice attacking kits in camp makes his ears lay back angrily. If he had been around he would have done something. Stepped in or called for someone to take care of it. Either or he would have acted. Curse him for being out hunting instead of keeping a watchful eye on the camp. Thankfully the threat was neutralized but still he can't help but wonder what kind of disgrace would attack their own clan mates-- let alone kits-- in the middle of camp and expect to survive. Despicable. If they met their end it was justly deserved. To him it was, anyway.

His own burning golden gaze stays locked onto the leader on her ledge above them, many vows silently being made to himself, and her, as he does so. They would see. He would make them proud. Make her proud. But now it was time for a warrior ceremony. One of his very favorite clan activities to watch.

->> rookpaw <<-
[ she/they | shadowclan | 15moons | purrks ]
a scarred dark blueish grey and white cat with grey eyes
rookpaw decidedly tuned out the cats around, or moreso beside her, she had chosen a spot rather far to the side after all, chat, instead focussing on dawnstar. even in riverclan, she had never been one to speak up during gatherings to express her opinion or fight anyone over anything, and she wouldnt say she necesarrily looked down upon cats that did exactly that, no, she could appreciate the honesty and confidence that it took to express their opinion openly, she herself just really disliked fighting over things that couldnt be changed. thats why she hadnt fought the change that had overcome riverclan. she didnt have the extra energy to complain over things that wouldnt change anyway. if she knew there would be a change if she spoke up she wouldve, but no amount of cursing fadingsun couldve changed anything.
when dawnstar continued she perked up again, finally pulled out of her head, the head still filled with bitter thoughts of riverclan, the head that should be focussed on trying to win over shadowclan. lostspark stepping down to rejoin the enforcers was not something she had expected, but the wording, 'return to the enforcers' was something rookpaw chose to carefully seperate from this sentence to remember for later. a tiny bit more about shadowclans history that she didnt know, something she mightve known had she been born- or err brought here as a kit.
mossfreckle stepping up came as no surprise, from what she had gathered, he had already had enough knowledge to be a full medicine cat when she was still a part of riverclan. but him chosing an apprentice immediately was a bit more well..surprising? not like they really knew how this was supposed to work, they couldnt even remember the last time riverclan had a full medicine cat and not an untrained apprentice left to try and keep the clan over water, or lacking a official one entirely. however, from what dawnstar said she could assume that it was the norm in shadowclan to have a medicine cat apprentice step up to full medicine cat and immediately chose an apprentice. perhaps dawnstar liked their ranks full. this time, she was sure, this time she wouldnt get her hopes up, she'd be a right fool to genuinely think there was a possibility of being chosen, no..no she'd work hard anyway. work hard not to get into a position she had worked towards for moons in riverclan but been denied, but to show them that she wasnt just here to hang around and embody every riverclan stereotype. a part of her still hoped, but the rational majority was dead set on proving her worth no matter where it would lead her. prove to mossfreckle that she was so self centered as to genuinely leaving riverclan for no reason besides not being valued for her work and not getting the position she had desperately wanted because that wasnt the truth. the truth was that riverclan was a sinking ship. and she had tried and tried and tried to keep it over water, barely anyone else had tried to help, and she wouldnt work herself into the ground for something that was destined to fail sooner or later.
more cats she didnt know, mistlewhisker was to be replaced by lostspark, shrewstep and moonmeadow get promoted to enforcers. all cats she knew by sight, only barely, and had never spoken to. but good for them. rookpaw briefly pondered on the naming of this rank, enforcers, a way cooler name for what she could only assume were equal to riverclans lionhearts. if only by a bit and based on the fact that she had no idea why riverclans lionhearts were even named 'lionhearts'. even more cats she didnt know, promoted to a position she didnt know. guards. huh. aid enforcers in securing camp and surroundings, all very sensible. she couldnt help but subconciously compare to riverclan once again, take this new information and use it to make riverclan look worse and worse in her head. anything to put a distance between her and a clan she had tried so hard to make a better place but ended up hurt and discredited.
and lastly, another apprentice she had definitely heard of before, goopypaw, but had no connection to, was getting their warrior name. rookpaw scanned the crowd for said apprentice fleetingly, in hopes of somehow connecting the vaguely familiar name to a unfamiliar face but gave up. she'd find out soon anyway.

(didnt expect to ramble that much oups)

Flashpaw knew she was late. She'd been sleeping, and when she woke up
she darted toward the meeting just in time to hear some of the things said.
She paused at what she heard. Lostspark was retiring? Her eyes widened in
surprise. Not to anyone in particular, the Molly mewed; "I-I hope sh-she
l-likes being a-an en-enforcer a-again."
And she meant it. It would be good for
her to be an Enforcer again. The former medicine cat had seemed really upset
as of late. At the sound of Moonmeadow getting promoted, she felt a burst of
happiness. Moonmeadow definitely deserved it, that was for sure. She'd helped
Flashpaw when there was the... the thing she saw. It hurt to think about the
body.

The pain was almost physical. Flashpaw struggled to force the thought away,
but the next couple of announcements helped shake it off. Mistlewhisker was
deputy? She definitely deserved it. "M-Mistlewhisker! M-Mis-Mistle-Mi..."
The apprentice's cheer faltered as she noticed there wasn't really any cheering.
Aw, man, now she was a stuttering, blubbering mess.

MIREPAW
she/her | shadowclan apprentice | 7 moons
Wait... Mama was here! How had she not noticed??? Looking up to Mama, Mirepaw dawned the biggest, brightest smile she could and snuggled against her side. She had been hesitant at approaching Mama after everything, but the tail that was wrapped around her back told her that she was still loved. A purr was rumbling throughout her entire body. "I didn't see you Mama! I'm sorry!!" Looking up at her now she continued to grin as big as she could, blue eyes round with pure happiness.

Gamma was talking on the stones and while she listened, her gaze was also lowered to her brother. Oh good, he wasn't hurt! "I'm glad!" came the little squeak as she tapped her paws happily on the ground. But she frowned a bit as he called Howls scary. "She's not scary - not really! I promise! Howls is just... just..." Mire couldn't figure out the right word and looked up at Mama for help. Howls was just... angry maybe? She didn't know... it confused her a bit, and now, she hadn't really seen her sister much...

Then Bleedingkit was rushing up to get his name - only Gamma must've missed him because all she did was look at him! Mirepaw frowned. "Maybe she'll do it later!" she whispered to her brother in encouragement, another large smile crossing her face. There was more news, stuff that Mirepaw didn't really understand, and then - wait. Horror etched in her face as she gasped, looking up at Mama. "Mama! You're not gonna be in the plant den anymore???" She knew her Mama must love plants, because she had spent an awful lot of time in there when she had been born. It was because she knew Mama loved the plant den as much as she loved her.

She knew it must hurt Mama to leave the plant den, and she didn't know why it had happened. Determined to make Mama feel good again, Mirepaw's eyes grew determined from where she sat pressed against her side. "Don't worry Mama - you'll always be the best plant cat to me!" Another large Mire-grin as she nuzzled her side, purring loudly once more.

Cinderpaw
~<>~
10/100
7 moons || she/her || ShadowClan Apprentice
small black tabby with minimal white markings and 3 legs; amber eyes

[ cw: heavy internalized ableism ]

Cinderpaw had been sitting on the outskirts of this meeting so that hopefully no one would have noticed she showed up late at all and slowly made her way to sit by another apprentice - Bitternpaw, she thinks his name is - so maybe all people would think was that she's trying to find a friend. She doesn't actually know Bitternpaw, though, but she can use him as a scapegoat for her tardiness if need be.

She'd managed to arrive in time to listen to reassignments be given out, and was a little unsurprised that her own name was called. Cornpuff hadn't done anything with her, so she had no attachment to her old mentor, maybe this new one would prove a better choice... Basilwisp... she doesn't recognize that name so perhaps they were one of the warriors who didn't do much in the way of standing out. Cinderpaw wanted to stand out. She wanted to be the best.. But... she couldn't. One hateful glance downward at her mangled form was all she needed to solidify that train of thought.

A reminder, she would tell herself, a reminder of her weakness and her foolishness. A reminder that she'd never amount to anything more than a halfway useful cripple. Other cats have three legs and they get around it just fine, the rational part of her mind told her, but she scowled and shut it out. Maybe they did, but she is not the same as they are. She still has a hard time getting around sometimes, stumbling when she forgets for a moment there is no fourth leg to catch her.

And then there is an announcement she had not been expecting: momma wanted to return to being an enforcer, she wouldn't be in the medicine den anymore. For some reason that makes Cinderpaw feel strange. She hadn't known a time where her momma wasn't in the medicine den. She'd heard stories and tales of how her momma had been an enforcer just like her papa had, but it seemed to her like the distant past, like a story or a myth. But it would be real again.

That also meant Mossy would need a new apprentice... some part of her thinks 'can I be the new apprentice?' but that had never even occurred to her. Her one goal had always been to be an enforcer. But... she can't help imagining taking over the place her momma once had. Maybe she could be important to the clan that way too..? She wants to be important. And maybe if she can't be an enforcer or even a guard... this would be how she'd do it. She's not sure it's something she really wants, though.

Mistlewhisker was chosen to take over as deputy next, and new enforcers were named. Cinderpaw wants to cheer, but her voice doesn't listen to her head, so she settles for beating her front paws against the ground. Mistlewhisker was not a cat she knew well, only that she had taken momma's old place as lead enforcer, but... she couldn't be that and deputy at the same time. Cinderpaw wants to feel happy for her. She thinks she does. Yet, she realizes that deputy, too, is a very important position in the clan. Could she be deputy one day?

There's a warrior ceremony next... Goopypaw. That's a silly name. Cinderpaw watches with interest as the ceremony commences, imagining that she is the one sitting there, getting her new name. What would her name be? She hopes it's something to do with her momma or papa... Cinderdark, or maybe Cinderspark...

[ @silver. - bitternpaw !! // @ramen - for basil mention // @/Mica - mistledep mention // @/poprock - goopster mention !! ]

The tall tom was getting bored with the meeting. Yellowtwist was glad he wasn't being called lazy, which he was still fully expected but it hadn't happened yet, but at least that would unique. He could get up and leave if he wanted to and he'd miss nothing.

Oh, the medicine cat was stepping down. The one who couldn't keep a name for 5 seconds. That was why he never kept track of names. Good thing he decided to stay, that would get confusing a bit later on. Anyway, he cared about the meeting again.

Now there was the changes, which would be the interesting if there was any, so he was pretty sure he wouldn't get bored and leave.

Oh? A new deputy that wasn't him. Awww. He'd get it next time, though. Who wouldn't pick him? (Evidently Dawnstar but no... you're wrong. You're just wrong.)

More enforcers. He didn't care. At all, actually. He was in a position where it didn't effect him whatsoever, so why should he care? Technically, it did a little bit, but only if someone did something utterly stupid Like, He didn't know, beating up a bunch of kittens. But who would do that?

Oh. Oh man. He was a guard. That was a baby enforcer, right? That was the most... he wouldn't call guard a rank but it was rank-esque. Even if it wasn't a rank, it was good enough for him! Yellowtwist smiled a little and his tail waved slowly a little off the ground.

Oh. There was the idiot who, as said before as an example of idiocy, beats up children! Yeah, wonderful idea! But what genius motive lead them to it? That was his old apprentice right there. So proud they never asked for training and murdered non-thunderclan babies all day! His content flew away as his ears turned down and seemed to be glued to his head for a bit.

Back to ceremonies. They were boring, but not heavily disappointing like the last announcement. He hoped his former apprentice was going to hell. He knew they were. But anyway, it was the gross slimey kid from battle training levelling up. Back to staring into space.

Quietpaw obviously wasn't much of a talker and Magpiepaw could tell. She was excellent at picking up on small details, its just she didn't bother to half the time. (Unless that small detail happened to be a noisy little frog who was interrupting her sleep.) She did catch Quietpaw's glare though, and she shot one right back at her. Some cats really just didn't like being friendly, did they? It's not like Magpiepaw had to come over here and bless this odd cat with her presence.

She clicked her teeth together with a soft clank before continuing. If this cat wasn't gonna talk, Magpiepaw wasn't about to see that as an invitation to shut up, no way. This was a challenge now. Game. On.

She mustered a casual smile before counting, her mind very set on annoying this cat. "I bet you those minks taste awful." Magpiepaw flicked an ear towards the pile. "But it's better than voles, honestly anything is better than voles. I'd rather eat a cats eyeball than voles. Oh well, at least I can pretend I kilt them myself." She shrugged her words drowning in sarcasm for the last sentence. She wasn't about to pretend, that was so kitty. "I wonder if Shadowclan will skin all those minks too and make a huge blanket for leaf-bare," Magpiepaw was just rambling at this point. "I wonder if that would be helpful. Heck, if it would even be possible. I'm sure if we really needed it we could do it."

Brown eyes lifted up to the sky as she tried her best to catch a glimpse of the sun without wincing. "Psh, it's not like we'd need it or anything," Magpiepaw scoffed, a genuine smile flickering onto her face. "Shadowclan is the only clan that has some sense nowadays. That's something that'll never change."

Her face hardened. "But this apprenticeship better change soon. I want to be a warrior, especially if that means I can get out more and rake some good for nothing cats to smithereens. I promise you, I'd be hunting like a mad man if I had the chance. I'll just have to find other ways to be helpful, bleh. Even though slitting throats is far more straight to the point than anything else it seems to be the only---" Magpiepaw cut herself off, her sentence going to a staggering halt before she completely changed subjects.

"The meeting surely will be eventful. I know for a fact that I'll be hollering as loud as I can for any of the warriors who aided in this fight, I know I'd want somecat to cheer for me like that. Plus, they made it out with their lives. Something I could've done with ease but y'know, its still impressive and good to know that our clan isn't overrun with disobedient slackers." Her eyes darted over to the fresh kill pile once more. "Oh, and minks too, I guess."

Quietpaw
Shadowclan apprentice
29/100

Hmm, so this cat wanted to push her? Well she'd shove back. Straightening slightly as Magpiepaw returned her glare, Quietpaw eyed her with undisguised suspicion as she went on. Minks? What in stars name was she talking about now? Why did this annoting cat have to linger on such a plain topic, were they obsessed with the rodents or something? Tch, how fitting for such a snarky cat. Sarcasm was her thing, and she found no amusement in others taking that tone near her, without her permission.

Despite harbouring some recent dislike for the newly met cat, Magpiepaw did gain some of her interest at the mention of common sense and Shadowclan. Two entirely different things in Quiet's opinion. Her eyes narrowed simultaneously to the hardening of the other apprentice's face as they suddenly were more serious. Oh? This cat had a hidden dark streak it seemed as they described what they yearned out of becoming a warrior:

Murdering.

Now they had found common ground.

Her attention immediately belonged to the tabby she-cat as she went on. Head tipped and sharp hues alight with the young she-cat absorbed every word that came out of Magpiepaw's maw. It was a feet indeed to actually have Quietpaw intrigued in what you were saying, but this cat had achieved it in just a few sentences. Mabye she could ignore her previous first impression of Magpie and spare a few moments of her time...nevermind.

Disappointment took hold of the splotched she-cat as Magpie's flood of words abruptly came to a halt and she changed the topic to something Quiet had demonstrated no regard for. Plumy tail lashing in upset, she turned away from the other apprentice and decided to watch the meeting instead, still angered the conversation had ended so suddenly. 'You just had to be stupid the moment you were being interesting, didn't you?'

*Sigh*, well this couldn't be anymore dull. Minks, injuries, some apprentice ceremonies(including her so called adopted brother) and the threat of executions and exiles, she gave Magpiepaw a sly glance at the mention of that. Meeting bored her. Mabye she should just stay in her den more often...wait there were other cats there too.

New apprentices, - she didn't bother cheering- reassignments, new clanmates...more, really? How many did they need...And a name change for...wait wasn't that the cat she had attacked? So they were her mother's new apprentice? Had she gotten it wrong? Actually, nevermind, she was tol cross to care about such things at this present time.

Next...her mother was retiring as medicine cat?! What?! Surely she'd heard wrong...why would Lostspark even become the healer in the first place if she was just going to return to her old position? The grey she-cat had confused her daughter once again with her choices in life but it didn't matter. Quietpaw was never even dependant on her as a kit so why should she care? She shouldn't, but still she wondered what the reason for the sudden role change was.

Oh, a new deputy, fantastic. The splotched she-cat didn't give a mouse-tail who Mistlewhisker was, an enforcer she believed but as long as they weren't a complete fool she wouldn't bother them...unless they tested her patience too much but she doubted they'd have any reason to do that.

Some new enforcers and guards (grandmother was playing favourites again it seemed) and finally a warrior ceremony. This was exhausting why couldn't they just go one moon without so much commotion? Her kin tired her and so did everyone else, couldn't she catch a break? Dark fur bristling, Quietpaw clawed at the ground, her bad mood now at it's peak. She was so, so fed up!

(So sorry this is late! I had a bit of a motivation block :') )

Default your warden provides all you need. [shadowledge]

gone are the days where you're endlessly racing towards pavlov's reward.
[ reaction post, feel free to interact!
@Mica [mistlewhisker mention]]

for the umpteenth time, grousepaw came in late to a meeting. with a yawn escaping his parted jaws, he found a place to sit among the outskirts of the half-circle, grooming down any stray fur from his nap.

squirrel-whatever was his new mentor, huh? he couldn't help but look for mistlewhisker among the crowd. he had known this was coming. he had literally said it himself that he knew it was coming. that didn't make it hurt any less. how many times had he been dropped or forgotten and passed between the paws of warriors? too many to be sure. grousepaw wasn't good with keeping a mentor. not for long, anyway. he just wouldn't cooperate. and shadowclan seemed to have a big lack of cats like him- not particularly trouble makers, but not followers either. he existed somewhere else. outside the spectrum. in the 3rd dimension.

whatever. the fact of the matter was this mentor was going to last one month, tops.
he'd bet his life on it.

then, the next news came. and it made his eyebrows rise in surprise.

mistlewhisker. . . deputy.

deputy.

and he frowned. stars have mercy on her. mercy. it's all she had ever wanted, he could tell from their short stint as mentor-and-apprentice that she had wanted nothing more than to bend and sway at dawn's every beck and call. that she wanted nothing more than to serve shadowclan. a dutiful, loyal worker drone. another turning gear.

and it hurt him to see. like fire in his chest. she got what she wanted, sure, but what now? her endless maze finally come to an end. but the end isn't an exit. it's a wall. a locked room with four walls, suffocating and trapped. you can look up at the sky as much as you'd like and dream of flying, but that won't give you wings. mistle had boxed herself into a prison of her own design. one that, he feared, was entirely planned by dawn. for, what else was there for mistle to reach for but remaining deputy in the hopes that one day her predecessor might die? but those thoughts seemed sacrilegious, and he knew that she'd throw herself into serving the clan until it killed her. or until the power went to her head. and she killed someone. not that he doubted that she already had. she'd do anything under dawn's command. murder was no exception. he saw why dawn chose her, now. she was a good tool. so eager to please. so desperate for approval that it was painful to watch. furthermore, mistle had the potential for ruthlessness and self sufficiency. her loyalty was no hinderance. it was just something for the tyrant queen of mean to use in her favour.

grouse wasn't sure when the anger started to rise and boil up in his chest, brow furrowing. mistle had abandoned the things that mattered, and him, for a power grab, he decided. that was fine. that was all well and dandy, he decided. if that lump of school decided she wanted to cut herself into a corner like she was playing god, so be it.

as new enforcers and guards were announced, he was the least bit distracted. slowly his momentary annoyance faded, and he caught sleepypaw and squirrelpaw's names in the list. he didn't know much 'a nothin' about midnight, but he'd met the other two 'paws. crowd followers. suckups to hell and back, honest to starclan. a curious brow raised at the decision.

yellowtwist was a wildcard, and he appreciated him for that. not that he thought the tom was a particularly good cat. better than following all the rules and letting the system chew you up and spit you out. better than all that.

well, he couldn't say that they were bad choices. they'd bend over backwards and break their own back for dawn's approval. they were definitely. . . malleable. he had pretty much predicted sleepy getting some sort of role in the clan beyond what she was. squirrel was a bit of surprise, but not too much. she didn't seem to have much of her own voice, a little anxious he'd noticed. but, still.

dawn could say jump, and he knew that sleepy and squirrel would trip over their own paws to say 'how high?'

grousepaw scoffed, looking away from the meeting. hell, it wasn't anything he cared about. but the political intrigue did catch him a bit, he had to admit.

(No problamo, I'm just as late to a handful of rps ;-; )

It was kind of odd, seeing how Quietpaw's face shifted and squirmed yet she didn't say anything. How could she not say ANYTHING!? Attention! Hellooooo!!! Big awesome amazing cat over here! Practically spilling her guts out to you!

With all that lack of eye contact it made it even more surprising when Quietpaw actually focused on her. Why? Magpiepaw didn't know why, and it frustrated her to no end. She was supposed to know everything, this was outrageous. The attention was gone just as quickly as it was given to her. Now more unreadable emotion filtered onto the apprentice face.

Magpiepaw frowned as her brown gaze tried to figure out their expressions, it was all like an impossible stupid stupid puzzle.

Don't worry, Magpiepaw thought. This isn't over, nothing's over until I win.

She turned her head back to Dawnstar, looking up at her scarred leader with eyes filled with burning determination. Announcement after announcement the leader carried on. Magpiepaw made the effort to cherrypick each promoted cat to give them a wide grin. That could be her one day, being all important and helpful and wanted. But of course they wanted her! It was only a matter of time, Magpiepaw would just have to be more awesome.

Then she noticed white streamers raking the ground below. An amused look scattered across Magpiepaw's face. Oh she could relate to that feeling, the feeling of just wanting to rip something in half. But why the heck would Quietpaw feel like that, why now? The announcements weren't anything horrible. This cat confused her to no end.

I mean sure, the medicine cat announcement was quite surprising, but she wasn't mad at it. Lostspark had done her part, now it was time for Mossfreckle and so on and so on. Magpiepaw honestly didn't care who was and wasn't the medicine cat as long as they healed cats as needed.

"You want a cat to claw at or something? Here, I can offer up a few frogs, it won't even take a heartbeat. Those things deserve to be clawed apart, just like any other nuisance." Magpiepaw didn't wait for her offer to be accepted or denied, she was already making her way to the fresh kill pile to pick out the slimiest frog she could find. If Quietpaw didn't wanna shred it apart, Magpiepaw surely would (even if she'd have to eat it after to save her tail from scolding).
