Sphinxpaw noticed the slight shift in the warrior's mood, but it quickly disappeared, which she noticed as well. So, she didn't comment on it. She wasn't going to bring down the hunting lesson even further. She did similar things, though there was nothing to be sad about if you never even saw your parents, or siblings, if she had any. When she was dropped off Roachstar took care of her before handing her over to Wormburrow. Both were father figures, though she thought of Wormburrow more as a father and Roachstar as a Starclan father of sorts. She stayed close to Wormburrow, her chest puffed out and her fur fluffed up staying next to him. She felt so big and so confident next to Worm. She padded her paws on the ground, her tail slowly swinging.

"Under the nice, soft, moist mud. Usually near the pond," she purred as if reciting something she had been told so many times. She knew where all of the predators and prey were found. Though she had never come into close contact with predators. And during leaf-bare prey is scarce as well as herbs. She wondered about the med cat, hopefully, the molly would have enough herbs just in case. She turned to Wormburrow again to listen to him explaining whatever skill he was going to teach her. She was excited though. Her ears went up and her little fluffy antennas shook in happiness.

Now, thinking about it, she kinda wished she had asked about Wormburrow's family. Maybe he would talk about it, that would be fun, she thought. She wondered if a family would be like the relationship that Wormburrow and her had. The idea warmed her and made her purr slightly, though she was still paying attention to Wormburrow. Did Wormburrow's family always live in Bugclan? The thought lingered. And where was her family? maybe one day they would come back for her. But then she would be sad, to think she has a real family, maybe Wormburrow would feel left out. That made her face droop a bit. Or he could join the family. Her face lifted back up and she grinned at Wormburrow with more of a sunshine look on her face. Always a happy cat she was, everyone knew that.

She couldn't wait to be a warrior! And have an apprentice of her own! Then she could teach that apprentice everything Wormburrow was teaching her. Then it would go on for moons, and moons! And maybe more burrowers would join. That would make Wormburrow happy. Her thoughts blocked out all the noise. She was in her little world, which was obvious by how her eyes drifted off into the distance, staring at the slightly clouded skies. The sun blocked off from the trees above them, keeping her eyes safe from burning. Her body relaxed now slightly, but still in a position of confidence.

(we need to add this to an actual clan, Worm and Sphinx are so adorable!)

Wormburrow
Genderfluid | Bugclan Warrior | Moons: 15 | No purrks

Wormburrow purred at the apprentice’s answer, a brilliant little thing she is, the molly thought to themself. She knew more than some warriors did, the information often went disregarded by the cats of Bugclan, ‘You can find them anywhere at night,’ and ‘I’m not sure where they are, I don’t care for them’ being among some of the responses he has gotten from fully grown warriors.

With a soft sway of his tail the warrior turned to the bank of a pond they were nearby. Along the banks and some further up were little, barely noticeable divots along the space. No one has been here yet then. WormBurrow found herself lightening up at the harvest that was to come, frogs were often thought of as gross but he grew up with them as his favorite meal. They still were.

Alright, Sphinxpaw, I want you to…” the mentor trailed off as they turned to look towards the apprentice who seemed to have spaced out. WormBurrow narrowed his eyes at her, giggling to himself, as he took a scoop of mud in his paw and playfully threw it at the apprentice. It was only a small bit, nothing compared to his mother who would throw him into a pond as a kit if he stopped paying attention. That was….mostly out of love?

Ugh. Enough family thoughts, the cat turned mischievously looked away from the apprentice, continuing the lesson before she could even say anything about it,
I want you to find me at least two toads with a few rules,” The warrior paced the bank once before settling a few tail lengths away from the apprentice, “You only have the space between me and you, they can only be found on the bank, and…

A glint caught in Wormburrow’s eyes, the she-cat smirking, “you only the time that it takes me to clean my paw,” as she spoke, the feline brought up one of his paws, only partially caked with mud and dirt.

Start now!” The tom called as he begin to groom himself, eyes trained on the apprentice with an easy going smile.

Sphinxpaw

┗━━━━ ★ ━━━━┛

Sphinx shuttered when she felt the sticky mud come in contact with the skin underneath her fur. She shook out her pelt quickly and tried to clean some of the mud on her paws and side. Again, she felt the mud. Oh, the texture sometimes bothered her. She wasn't a fan, but she knew she had to learn how to get used to it. She growled at her mentor slightly, her ears going down, and a slight whimper was added to the growl.

Finally, after just finishing cleaning the mud, Wormburrow had to, they just HAD TO, make finding a toad a challenge. In. the. mud. Hissing again at her mentor she lowered her head as she trotted down to the edge of the water. Although she wanted to make her mentor proud, in the mud, with the mud, she didn't want to. They could've done anything else! She is burrowing was dry, wasn't it?

She scoffed as she tiptoed around the mud, trying to find a toad, none, she heard the little croaks, but couldn't see anything. Finally giving up on the bug clearing, she went into the more muddy, tall grass. None. She looked back at her mentor, they were almost done cleaning their hand.

She decided to give up and walk back onto the grass as she finished cleaning her paw. "The mud felt.. sticky and like there were little bumps in them," she said, shuttering, once again, at the remembrance. The little chunks of dry dirt and sand in the mud, lathering on to her pelt and drying. Making her skin and fur feel tight.

She couldn't understand how Wormburrow did it. He was accustomed to the mud, she supposed. But not her, but that would make Wormburrow sad. So she had tried to stick it out. She put her head down slightly, upset at herself for not sticking it through, was she not a good apprentice now? She wouldn't look up to Wormburrow. What if he was disappointed in her?

She dragged her paw along the dusty ground, kicking up some of the dry dirt and the grass. Her pelt stained brown from the mud earlier. She should probably go wash off. She was overthinking it, was she? Wormburrow was probably done training her, maybe Scorpiantail would. Her little ears and fluffy tail went down deflatedly. She bet that Wormburrow never even wanted to look at her again for the issue with the mud. It should be a normal thing, she thought again, mud is a perfectly normal feeling. Oh, she was starting to feel sick, her sight slightly blurring. She tried to focus on something, but everything just made her dizzier. Made her world spin. It wasn't spinning, but her legs felt weak and sore. And her body didn't want to seem to stand up. So, she slowly got down to sit.

Wormburrow frowned, not at the apprentice failing to find a toad but rather at the apprentice’s fading enthusiasm in what was happening. Why was that? The tom wished that it was easier for him to understand the cats around him, especially with the more important people to him like Sphinxpaw but no matter what they did they seemed to have missed the time of learning social things when everyone else just knew. He sighed at himself and his inability of knowing what was making Sphinxpaw feel bad and continued with what he knew,

I know this isn’t the most fun thing ever but it's a necessary skill. Being able to locate and find toads and frogs is what kept me from dying some leaf bares in my youth. It’s pretty simple and when you get good, you can dig ‘em out in a few swipes.” The tom walked over to the bank as he spoke and after eyeing the solid for a while swiped down at the dirt, in just a few pawfulls a toad came out and Wormburrow swiftly killed it and set it to the side, “[B]Now that the weather is starting to warm up the toads will come out of their leaf bare hibernations in the soil and you want have to get so messy. It makes them easy to deal with during leaf bare though, sleepy and easy to find their burrows. Speaking of,”

With his previously clean, now dirty again paw the molly pointed out the little divots in the bank and up further away from the water easily. Though she had been trained for this and Sphinxpaw was new so the differences between the normal soil level and slight divots could be hard to see. Maybe they should turn their attention elsewhere, Sphinxpaw didn’t seem to be enjoying this at all, if anything the poor apprentice looked miserable and that made Wormburrow feel bad. Ah, why did Roachstar give them an apprentice again? Why did that leader think that the cat they found randomly in the middle of the marsh, noticeably awful at socializing, would make a good mentor? Wormburrow made no outward change in expression but he was a bit…he didn’t know, couldn’t name the emotion flickering in his chest and waved a paw even though nothing was really said.

How about this, as it's a bit cold to be digging around in mud and getting wet, once you can point out just a couple divots up off the bank we can move on to hunting elsewhere a bit more dry? Try to bring back ol’ Roachy something good and show up that deputy?” Continuing without waiting for the apprentice to agree, as he knew she likely would given her growling about the situation, the warrior began to be more detailed in his explanation of the differences in the depressions of dirt where you can find roads hidden beneath. His moth taught him the same thing the leaf bare before she got ill. She was lucky that it was taught to him as supporting himself and his sick mother got rough during the colder seasons. Anyways, maybe Sphinxpaw would like tunnel hunting more than toad hunting. But…was WormBurrow really willing to show the tunnels to someone inexperienced.

The warrior looked to the apprentice for a glance and decided not yet, as much as he adored Sphinxpaw and he knew that she would likely do well in the environment and probably wouldn’t mess up anything WormBurrow just couldn’t let anyone else in right now. Not when it is still so fragile, when Wormburrow was still fragile about the tunnels. Also the whole, rats are in the tunnels currently thing, those cats ruining his tunnels. How dare they? Honestly after this hunting lesson with Sphinxpaw he should head down and see if she could set up something to trap the cats. There was more than one but there shouldn’t be more than WormBurrow could handle, right?

WormBurrow sighed and looked to the apprentice awaiting a response.
(I haven’t reread/edited this so if there’s any major mistakes let me know lol)
